One of the subjects to be discussed will be the state con vention of the Oregon Retail Grow ers' association which willl meet in Portland February 18, 19 and 20. Delegates from Salem have not yet been elected and probably will not be chosen tonight, though they may be nominated. The meeting will be alled at 7:30 charp instead of the usual hour of 8, and will be made short so the members may attend a local theatre to- see the official war pictures. A new canning, machine is being installed which, when in action, will fill s and weigh, automatically, the different products put up by this concern in naraf f ine cartons instead of tin cans. The process is ah interesting one as' applied to evaporated foods, and will increase the daily output of packages to an enormous extent. At present women and girls fill the packages and weigh on a set of scales on the work table. , One carload of products is now being shipped regularly from the plant, distribution being made from the head office in Portland. Will amette university, on Saturday, February 16, to determine the men tal preparedness of young men -residents of the first congressional dis trict of Oregon between the ages of 16 and 50 who desire to be appoint ed as cadets at the United States naval academy to enter . with the class of 1918. The examination will be conducted by Professor J. T. Matthews of Willamette university. This is a special apopintment due to the passage of the act of December 20. 1917. - Any candidates who desire to en ter this competitive test should write Representative Hawley at Washington'. D. C, giving the date of their birth and place of actual res idence and he will advise them of the requirements for admission to the academy and also give ithem more definite information concern ing the competitive test. Filling the position left by the chief. Officer H. H. Lucas is servir at present as acting chief, . having been appointed by Chief Cooper when he became ill. A successor to Chief Cooper will be lected at a meeting of the cty council in the near future, possibly at the meeting next Monday night. It is not necessary that the new chief be a member of the force at present, but it Is probable that the new bead of the' department will be chosen from the force now serv ing. While the chief of police ls elected by the people at the regular city elections, the charter provides that when a vacancy occurs by death resignation or otherwise the council shall elect. Both Judges Absent and Little Is Done in Court In the absence of both judges of the circuit court very little was done in court yesterday, and as there will be no session of the court until this afternoon, no orders will be entered until them. . Complaint was filed by Nellie Jones against John H. Jones, asking for a decree of divorce on ground of cruel and Inhuman treatment desert tion being added as further cause for separation. Action to quiet title to certain lands was brought by Wcnzel Hhut against Lucy M. Kahut, et al, and Lucy M. Kahut, as executrix of the estate of John J. Kahut, deaccsed, in which the heirs to the " estate claim an interest in ' property to which plaintiff alleges possession In fee simple title. , Writ of attachment was issued in the suit of A. Kelly and Rolwrt Wade, arrested b the sheriff and charged with burg lary committed in the store of Ran som & 8peen In Aumsville. Upon bearing all the evidence in the case the judge decided there was not sufficient evidence against Wade, and released him. but- bound Kelly over to the grand jury in the sum of $250 bonds, which defendant has so far not furnished.
