Stagnant Water Kills Cattle.
The process may be a slow one
but it cis none the less, if long
enough continued ; and even for
a short season, it tells to a certain
degree upon the physical condi
tion. To back up this opinion, we
have no less an authority than the
National Pice Stock Journal.
,1'ersons who think that the con
tents of any swamp pools or any
" other pools of stagnant water are
good enough for their stock, com
mit a great mistake. Stock of no
description can thrive without
ample supplies of water; and by
the restlessness and suffering oc
casioned by a neglect to make
suitable provision in this respect,
the results of. the most careful
feeding and the benefits of the
richest pasturage are often entirely
dissipated. Pastures should be
located where they can have the
benefit of running water or a
suitable lake, for the quality of
the water at this season of the
year is a matter of prime import
ance. During the hot months,
when vegetable decomposition is
most rapid, and when stagnant
water is undergoing active chemi
cal change, no elfort should be
spar,l to provide stock with wa
ter that is reasonably pure. We
know, says our authority, that it
will involve considerable labor to
draw water in the ordinary man
ner from a well where a large num
ber of animals are confined in a
single enclosure, or to bring the
necessary water from adjacent
streams. J Jut where the matter
does not admit of compromise by
driving the stock to pure water
two or three times dailY, we be
lieve it better economy to draw
by hand what water they require,
or to rig a windmill lor the pur
pose, than to force them to drink
from stagnant and fermenting
pools.

CJifti:i .Souls. Suine men move
through life as a band of music
moves down the street, Hinging out
' pleasure on every side through the
air to every one far and near, who
can listen. Some men iill the air
with their presence and sweetness,
as orchards, in October days, fill
the air with the perfume of ripe
fjkuit. Some women cling to their
own house like the honey suckle
over the door, yet, Like that flower,
iill the region with the subtile fra-
grance of their goodness. How
great a bounty and blessing it is to
hold the royal gilts of the soul
that they shall be music to some,
and fragrance to others, and life to
all. It would be no unworthy
thing to live for, to make the pow
er which we have within us to
the breath of other men's joys; to
fill the atmosphere which they
C'lnust stand in with a brightness
which they cannot create for them
selves. Wilt. Decltxic- A Washington
correspondent says that a promi
nent Government official stated to
day that President Grant, after
carefully considering the situation,
had decided, at an early day, to
announce his determination posi
tively to decline a renomination.
1 his action, the correspondent s.iys,
was not hurriedly taken, but that
the President consulted with his
best and most trust-worthy friends.
The political situation of the vari
ous States was thoroughly canvass
ed, and in the most important of
them, divisions were found, which
were beyond healing. Further
more, it was found that large com
binations existed in various States
for the purpose of sending double
delegates to the National Bepubli
can Convention, which would nec
essarily distract the councils of
that important body, and create a
bolter's convention, with a second
candidate, thus, in all probability,
throwing the President into the
hands of the Democracy.

If .Mr. Bout well were a farmer,
and managed his business on the
same principle, he conducts the
Government, he would sell his
horses, ploughs, harness, and seed
wheat, apply the proceeds in pay

which had ten years to run; and,
at the same time, keep a large
amount of cash on deposit in bank
on which he received no interest.
At present he is redeeming bonds

worth to the people ten per cent.,
and which is wrung from them at
a sacrifice which only the exigency
of a great national calamity would

millions lies idle in the Treasury,
and drawing no interest. These

ander Hamilton once said to an in

"Men give me credit for genius.
All the genius I have lies just in
this: When I have a subject in
hand I study it profoundly; day
and night it is before me; I explore
it in all its bearings; my mind be
comes pervaded with it. Then the
ellbrts which I make, the people
are pleased to call the fruit of
genius. It is the fruit of labor and
thought.

A young wife in Troy cured her
husband of a disposition to absent
himself from home at night by pro
viding him with an excellent dinner
and saying to him afterwards :
" George, if you find a sweeter
spot than our home describe it to
me, and I will rival it if I die in the
attempt." A kiss and a few tears
completed the victory.
His Eulogy. A man in Kansas
