A Living Head on a Dead Body-
o Xcar Glemvood, Iowa, resides
Jas. T. Anderson, aged twenty-six.
Three years ago he died from his
neck downward. His head, how
ever, is alive, and more vigorous
.and active than before the body,
-which it once governed, ceased to
0 be vital At the age of two
James' father died, and his mother
soon married again. At the age
of three he was tossed several times
by an angry cow. Shortly after
ward, while he was eating bread
and milk, a rattlesnake joined him,
.and when the two had linished his
pnakeship made his bow and re
tired. At live years old a horse
raiyiway with him, and made for
a stable, across the entrance of
which was a bar. The horse rush
ed in under the bar, and his moth
er seized him just in time to save
his life. He grew up active and j
strong, and was fond of sports.
IIe6became a good gymnast.
James, at the time of the acci
dent that left him with a dead
body and a living head, was a tine,
two hundred pounds, and there
was not an ounce of superfluous
tlcsh on his body.
One afternoon, when on a visit
-5 to an uncle at Glemvood, Iowa, he
0 was exercising on a pole placed
from one tree to another 111 the
backyard, lie had on a pair of
gaiters tipped with patent leather.
He swung down from the pole by
his feet; the leather slipped and he
fell. lie struck his neck just
where it joins the shoulders. He
o was bewildered but perfectly con
scious. Ilisjbody felt as though
smashed to a icily. He experi
enced a horrible tingling, and
when the doctor came he t ld him
not to touch him as his body was
broken to pieces. His neck was
broken; inflammation set in, and
all thought his end was come. To
the surprise of all, in a few days
0 lie began to mend. He was short
ly after removed to his step-father's
house, where he still resides,
Time hung lieavilv on his hands,
and he resolved to try to learn to
writelwith his mouth. He accom
plished this, and, as he says in a
letter to J. K. Nutting, he soon
wrote a tolerably good mouth.
He is now trying to paint, and
hopes by this means to obtain
something for his support. He
lias been, and still is, tenderly
eared for by his sister, herself a
cripple, and speaks in the highest
terms of his step-lather, who,
though a poor man, has shown
him every kindness.
His worst enemies are the ilies
which buzz about his face. He
holds a leafy twig in his mouth,
however, ond manages to twirl it
about in a wonderful manner to
drive oil his tormentors. This
case is without parallel, exc-ei.t
that of John Carter of EiMan.l

Fire-Pro oHing Shingle Roofs.
In this country, where shingle is
the pivailing roof, at least in the
rural districts, a simple method of
rendering them impervious to tire
ought to be acceptable to every
owner of a dwelling thus covered.
Even in the hearts of old cities,
many old houses oiler these almost
tinder-like roofs to the flames and
cinders 'whenever a contlagration
occurs in the neighborhood. It is,
therefore, important to know that
a wasli composed of lime, salt, and
line sand or wood-ashes, put on in
the ordinary way of whitewash,
renders the roof fifty-fold more safe
against fu from falling cinders, in
case of fire in the vicinity. It pays
the expenses a hundred-fold in its
preserving influence against the
effect of the weather; the older
and the more weather-beaten the
shingles, the more benefit derived.
Such shingles are generallv more
r less warped, rough, and cracked.
1 he application of wash, bv wet
ting the upnor surface, rJstores
them to thoir original or first form.
