SCENE, BAR-ROOM. TI3IE, MIDNIGHT.

go home if he has got one to go

Landlord 'Hush! Hush! He'll
call for something else directly."
Wife "I wish he would make

every honest man was in bed."
Landlord " He's taking the

At this time James began to
come to his right senses, and com

stretching himself, as if he had
just awoke, saying, "I believe 1
will go."
"Don't be in a hurry, James,"
said the landlord.
"O, yes, I must go," said James,
and he started.
QVftctf an absence of some time
the landlord met and accosted him
Avith, "Hallo, Jim, why ain't you
been down to see us!"
"Why," said James, "I had
taken so many shingles off my
house it began to leak, o I thought
it time to stop the leak, and I have
done it."
The astonished tavern-keeper
went home to tell his wife, and
James has ever since let rum alone,

Health of Farmers. There
are seven reasons why fanners arc
healthier than professional men,
viz :
1. They work more and develop
all the muscles of the body.
2. They take exercise in the
onen air and breathe a jrrealer
amount of oxygen.
3. Their food and drinks are
commonly less adulterated and far
more simple.
4. They do not overwork the
brain as much as professional men.
5. They take their sleep during
the hours of darkness, and do not
try to turn night into day.
(3. They are not ambitious and
lo not wear themselves out so
rapidly in the tierce contest of
rivalry.
7. Their pleasures are simple

Cruel as the Grave. John B.
Gough, in a recent lecture, said :
"IQannot drink moderately. It is
physically and morally impossible.
If any man should give me wl.iskv
by-jany means unknown to myselt,
it would be at the risk of my
sinking back to what I was twenty
live years ago. You may call it
weakness, or what you will, "but
it is the truth." We do not doubt
it, for we once knew a gentleman
in Boston, a man of the hihcst
literary character and fame, who
occasionally took to extreme
drinking, who once said, when re
monstrated with concerning his in
firmity, "I love my wife and chil
dren, dearly and devotedly love
them ; but when I have tasted
liquor, were they standing on the
brink t the bottomless pit, and
the. condition offered me that I
snouiu see tnem go to eternal de
struction if I should drink another
glass of brandy, I would take the
liquor. I could not help the act."

Our Clueal Chops. The Phil
adelphia .Ledger has compiled a
table of cereal statistics for the
years 1800 and 1870. It gives
lor tjie total crop in the United
States for 18G0, including wheat,
rye, oats, barley, corn and buck
wheat, 1,191,412,100 bushels; and
for the year 1870, 1,500,000,000.
With a total population of 40,000,-
O
000, this gives bushels to each
man, woman and child in the
country. The average consump
tion is hardly above eight bushels
to each person ; and so Ave have
for export ami feed for stock
about 201 bushels to each person.
In 1840 the cereal products of the
lakebasin footed up 308,205,827
bushels; in 1850 it rose to 434,
802,001 bushels, and iu ISOO to
670,031,559 bushels.

Saw Her Ghost. The Colusa

Marysville, said, "On account of
my shattered voice, I ask you to
draw as near me as possible." The
poor fellow doubtless saw the
ghost of Madam Surratt, and de
sired the people? to hover near him,
that he might feel protected. It
is said that murderers are continu

Cows Going Blind. The cows
in Jackson county have been
struck with blindness. In Inde
pendence some 40 of the finest
milk cows have completely lost
their sight. In Kansas City there
are not less than 200 blind cows.
The disease is spreading all ovir
the county and cows are having a
gloomy time. The eye begins to
swell and then commences to run
clear water which lasts about live
days when a hard white film cov
ers the eye, completely destroying
the sight. The general health of
the cow is not affected and there
is no change in the quality or
quantity ot the milk. Columbia

The indications now are that
both the city of Philadelphia and
State of Pennsylvania will go
Democratic at the election soon to
come off. If they do, goodbye
Radicalism. What an earnest
"Thank God" will go up from
millions of grateful and rejoicing
hearts. There will be some sing

is broken.
