much affected in viewing this new advance

To. His sermon was followed by a alien
historic statement written and read by
Hon W.C. Johnson, from which it ap
pears that the church was organized in
1847 with seven members; that -14 had
been received by immersion, two ot whom
re now successful preachers of the gns-jpel-
that over 50 others had a home

death, dismission by letter, and exclusions

a debt of about $2,000 on their present

ing part of the day's doings. Rev Mr.
Curtis. Gen. Missionary of the Am. Bapt.
Home Miss. Society for this State. Came
forward and said it ws? proposed to raise
Ibis sum before leaving the bouse, and
after a brief exhortation, called for
pledge. In less than three-quariers of an
hour$2,0a7, vras raised in pledges and
payments, the first ranging all the way
from $2 Kp to $300 each. This will
wipe out the church debt, but something
over $300 is needed to purchase an organ
and bell. We congratulate our friends
O upon being thus comfortably housed, and
hope they may live up to the spirit of the
closing words of Mr. Johnson's address
making the poor and the rich alike, wel
come to a home warm with christian love.
Ocr Bots. Our Firemen presented a
very creditable -appearance last Monday,
and Oregon City has rfiason to be proud
of her fire department. The boys reflected
credit on the town by their gentlemanly
conduct while participating in (he cele
bration at Portland. The Bulletin says of
tbein:
The delegation from this (Oregon City)
Department was one of the most interest
ing features of the procession. Though
small in numbers, they made up that tie
f;cicp:y in stature, the men being the
l.irgest. tallest, and. we were about to say
the handsomest, but wc "won't, in tue
whole procession. They were ttie espe
cial objects ol the young ladies, an.l we

land's beauties lost her heart while gazing

partment. Kiw.edTv a. Mule. J. B. Williams, re
siding about Seven mile3 east of this city,
was killed last Saturday. The circum-
rtances of his death are as follows : He
was leading a mule along the road, when
he met a Fregro. the nule became frighten
ed; the negro stepped aside and allowed
Mr. Williams to pass; after he had passed,
lie turned around to make the mule look
tit the object at which he became alarmed,
but as soon as he saw the negro, he com
menced running, the rope by w hich he was
leading the mule becoming fastened to
Mr. W.'s hand, which pulled him off the
horse he was riding, aad he was thus
dragged over stumps and rocks fer a con
siderable distance, receiving injuries
from the effects of which he died on Sun
day. Mr. Williams was a good citizen,
and leaves a family atid raany friends who
regret his unfortunate death.
Can Do witiioct it. The Christian gen
lleman who thinks Oregon is very "near
heathendom." and who preached at the
Haptist Church last Suuday evening,
showed that he needed reconstruction and
that his style of sermons are rather behind
the age in this country. I its sermon
would have done very well bad be left

could not regard in a very Christian light.

who came here to christianize the "heath
ens of Oregon" may become cn ihzed in
due time, and omit his harsh words to
wards other denomination and avoid t ie
recital of portions ct nauicui bmuip

Road Tkesspasseks. The supervisor of
Road District No. 23 entered a complaint
against the Canal Company for obstruct
in"- ihe road on the west side of the river,
and the Court made an order for an action
of tresspass, and retained three attorneys
to carry on the suit. We cannot see that
Ihe county has any grounds lor an action,
as at a former term the Court granted per
mission to the Company to use the road as
they might desire iu the construction ot
the canal. It looks to us as though sony
troublesome spirit is at the bot tom oi tih,
which never can be quiet unless it has a
law suit on hand, or is throwing some ob
stacle in the way of other people making
improvements.
Fbee-Tuixkebs. B. F. Underwood, a
free-thinker, (or spiritualist) lectured in
tfrs place last Friday and Saturday even
ings. Hi positions are the same as
those of all sceptics, and we observed
nothing new in hi lecture. lie is from
Boston, and we j ulge. from the tenor ol
his Wctnre, that -he is iu sympathy with
all the isms which originate at the hub
Free love, free nigger, spiritualism, scep
ticism, woman sutfiagistn. and in fact all
the isms which are how cursing the Amer
ican people. In our opinion Todd, the
spiritualist who lectured here some years
O ago, is his superior in argument.
Not a Bkancu. We see it stated in an
exchange that certain parties are opening
a book store in Portland, who claim it to
be a brauch house of A. L. Bancroft; of
San Francisco. We were shown a letter
from Messrs. A. L. B , last Tuesday, in
which they say that a couple of their
former clerks were about to open a store,
but that Messrs. Bancroft had nothing to
do with the concern and were in no way
interested.
Oroan. The Council appropriated
sixty dollars, the sum required in addition
to what was realized at the concert given
by the scholars, to purchase aa organ for
the Seminary.

New Residence. Messrs. I., and R.
Jacob have purchased the lot on the
aouth-west corner of Sixth and Main
street, formerly owned by Mr. Warner, for
which they paid $1,500. It is their inten
tion to erect a fine residence on the site,
the Told building having already been torn
down. The residence to be erected is to
cost about $G,000, which will be by far
the most costly residence in the city. We
are pleased to note ibis evidence of im
provement, and hope others will follow
thir example.
Blooded stock. We bv received ft
list of etock purchased by Col. Joseph
Teal, from Col. Coleman Younger, of San
Jose, California. They consist of the
thorough-bred Durham stock. The names
of the animals purchased are. Storm,'
"Howard." -Lady Bell" and -Romie."
The pedigree accompauies this list and
Ehows them to be tine thorough breds. We
suppose Col. Teal proposes lo improve his
stock, of which he lias a great amount in
this State.
Accident. About three o'cIock yester
day, a boiler connected with a drilling
machine at the Lock and Canal Works,
opposite Oregon City, exploded, but we
were unable to learn whether any persons
were injured. Herald Clh inst.
Not much neighbor, only a little extra
amount of steam let off. That's all. No
explosion, nothing or nobody hurt, and
consequently no harm done.
Thk Fihkmen. A delegation from the
fire departments of Salem and Albany
came down on the morning train last
Monday to join their brother firemen in
the celebration of the annivereary of the
Portland Fire Department. Three cars
were loaded full. Jack Allphin was on
hand . and exhibited to our people what
he said would be the best looking Stewart
iu Portland iu the shape of an African
fellow citizen. Jack is Hie happiest lellow
iu the world, and a good fellow, too.

Ayer's
Sarsapartlla
Is widely known
as one of the most
effectual remedies
ever discovered for
cleansing the sys
tem and purifying
the blood. It has
stood the testof
years, with a con
stantly growing rep
utation, based on its
intrinsic virtues, and sustained by its re
markable cures. So mild as to be safe and
beneficial to children, and yet so searcliing
as to effectually purge out the great cor
ruptions ot the blood, such as the scrofulous
and syphilitic contamination. Impurities,
or diseases that have lurked in the system
for years, soon yield to this powerful anti
dote, and disappear. Hence its wonderful
cures, many of which are publicly known,
of Scrofula, and all scrofulous diseases,
Ulcers, Irruptions, and -eruptive dis
orders of the skin, Tifmors, Blotches,
Boils, Pimples, Pustules, Sores, St.
Anthony's Fire, Kose or Erysipe
las, Tetter, Salt Kheum, Scald
Head, King-worm, and internal Ul
cerations of the Uterus5 Stomach,
and Liver. It also cures other com
plaints, to which it would not seem especi
ally adapted, such asDropsy, Dyspep
sia, Fits, IVeuralgria, Heart Disease,
female Weakness, Debility, and
tieucorrhoea, when they are manifesta
tions of the scrofulous poisons.
Jt is an excellent restorer of health and
strength in the Spring. By renewing the
appetite and vigor of the digestive organs, .
it dissipates the depression and listless lan
guor of the season. Even where no disorder
appears, people led better, and live longer.
for cleansing the blood. The systeHi move3
on with renewed vigor and a new lease of
life.

VEGETABLE SICILIAN
HAIR
RENEWER.
Everv vear increases the popularity
of this valuable Hair Preparation :
which is due to merit alone. "We can
assure our old patrons that it is kept
fullv tin to its hiorli standard: and it
is the only reliable and perfected prep-
araiion ior restoring urn w auv.i
Hair to its youthful color, making it
soft, lustrous, and silken. The scalp,
by its use, becomes white ana ciean.
It removes all eruptions and dandruff,
and, by its tonic properties, prevents
the hair from falling out, as it stimu
lates and nourishes the hair-glands.Q
By its use, the hair grows thicker and
stronger. In baldness, it restores the
capillary glands to their normal vigor,
and will create a new growth, except
in extreme old age. It is the most
economical Hair Dressing ever used,
as it requires lewer applications, and
gives the hair a splendid, glossy ap
pearance. A. A. Hayes, M.D., State
Assayer of Massachusetts, says, "The
constituents are pure, and carefully
selected for excellent quality ; and I
consider it the 15est i-reparation
for its intended purposes."
