If the chicks are still with their mother, apply kerosene in moderate quantities to o the feathers of her whole body near the skin, particularly to the wings and other parts that come in con- tact with the chickens. Then go through the same operation with O each0 chicken separately, paying especial attention to the head, which is the part the vermin prefer. do not allow the kerosene to touch the skin, if it can be avoided, but aim at slightly moistening the feathers near the roots. If care is not taken, the skin may be badly injured, and chickens have been killed by overdoing the matter. Blindness will result if the kero-O-sene touches the eyes of the birds. One application, if thorough, will destroy every insect. Another is to dust sulphur freely upon the skin of old and young. It is as itticacious as the kerosene, unless they immediately rufHe their feath ers and shake it oft. To lessen the risk of this, it is better to apply it at night when they are quiet and it will do its work before morning. It will not injure the chickens in the least, applied in any quantity. -O m Josh Eiliina-s on Free Love- o I beleaf in free fights cspeshila arming cats and dogs. I beleaf in free rides on agate. I boleaf in freed n in for evry slave on arth. But free love iz one ov them kinds of freedum, that it don't do tew be limber with. If this world was the gardin ov Edin, and lull ov Adam and Eve, as they was when they was fust launched, then i k;in imagine it might do for sum other Adam to hold mi Eve on his lap, and talk about his athnitee, and spiritoal essence, and play lamb: u In them daze thare want no hu min natur, it was all God natur. Ilumin natur has bin soaked so mutch sinse, it is tew weak tew be trusted in a lot whare the feed iz poor, nex tew a meddo, without mutch fence between nor enny poke on. Free love wants more poke than enny other animal. I don't believe in total depravity unless a man has a good chance. Free love iz a good deal like drinking G shilling gin for a bev ridge. Bevridge iz a Chinese word, and means cussidnesss. And the free love i have witness ed thus far has existed between a letcher on one side, and lunatick virtue on the other side, that had been deodorized out ov its truth, antkhad lost aul ov its modest v and shame in hunting after a con dishun wharc sin ceased to be a crime. The fust free lover we have any akoun ov, was the devil. Box-Wood. The pictures in the illustrated journals and many books, are cut in box-wood. This wood grows in different parts of the world. If it is twelve inches in diameter. its age is to be numbered by cen turies, for it is about 500 years old, Those trees -which attain "a diame ter ofeeighteen inches are about 1,000 years old. Upon this the Louisville Journal remarks that if he would hereaf ter devote the whole of his time to his own private affairs, the country could very well afford to double his salary.
