THEY DIDX'T THINK.
BT PECEBS CART.
. Once a trap was bated
With a piece of cheese;
It tickled so a little mcuse
It almost made him sneeze ;
An old rat said: "There's daDger-
Be careful where you gol '
" Nonsense," said the other,
G "I don't think, you know ! "
So he walked in boldly
Nobody in sight;
.First he took a nibble,
Tten he took a bite ;
iCb.se the trap together
Snapped as quick as wink,
Cacthing mousey fast there,
'Cause he didn't think.
Once a little turkey,
Fond of her own way,
Wo ildu't ask the old ones
Where to go or stray
ISbe said: " I'm not a ba y,
Here I am h;iIf-giovn ;
Surtly I am big enough
To run about alone! "
Off she went, but somebody,
Hiding, saw her pass;
Soon, like snow, her feathers
Covered all the grass.
So she made a supper'
For a sly young mink.
'Cause she was .s- headstrong
That she wouldn't think.
Once there was a robin
L:ved outside the door,
Who wanted to gi inside
An hop upon the ll 'or.
" Oh. no," said the mother,
" You must stay witti me ;
Little liir ls are safest
Sitting in a tree."
I don't '-are," said the robin,
And gave his tail a fling,
"I don't think the old folks
Know quite everything.''
Down he flew, and ki:ty seized him
Before he had time to blink.
Oli !" he cried, I'm sorry,
But I dida't think."
Now. my little children
Wmo read this -ong,
Don' you see what trouble
Comes of thinking wrong?
And can't you take a warning
From their dreadful fate,
Who began their thinking
When it was too late?
Don't think there's always safety
Where no danger shows ;
Don't suppose you know more
Tiian anybody knows ;
But wlien you're warned of ruin.
Pause upon the brink,
And don't go miller headlong
'Cause you didn't think.
Death Among Politicians.
The New York correspondent of the
Rochester Democrat writes:
Q The recent death of Vstllandigham calls
to my attention the remarkable exception
which it forms to that of other departed
political leaders. It is indeed worthy of
ioticefthat this class of me;i have lhed to
un old age. or to its near approach, and
tht,ttiey have seldom been removed by
violence. On this account Mr. Vallaudig
ham's case attracts particular notice. His
death and that of Peter Cagger are
among the rare instances of the death of
political loaders by accident. The death
