One eveniDg. passing through the street, I saw two ragged urchins meet ; Said one, who seemed the elder boy, "While every feature beamed with joy. "John, father's home and sober!" The other answered, " is that so ? Then we'll hive supper that I know ; ' And off for home those two did start ; But, oh ! those words went to my heart ; " John, father's home and sober ! " fiatk. swift as lightning, flew my mind, To tht sad home just ieft behind, Where dwelt my children and my wife, Who were, to ree, as dear as life, Father's not home nor sober. 1 thought of my poor Anna now. Iler grief-bowed form.her care-worn brow; Then, farther back, to days of bli3s My Anna's smiles my children's kiss Bright days when 1 was sober ! My heart grew very lone and sad, Itemor3e and shame near drove me mad ; I knew that I caused all their woe I, 6nce so proud, but now so low A drunkard seldom sober ! Fierce was the struggle, hard the fight, Which raged within my soul that night. I called for help God heard my prayer. Chased from my breast the wild despair. And helped me to keep sober. From rum I vowed I would abstain. And touch the poison ne'er again. I've kept my promise firm and they, My happy children, now can say. " Oar father's house and sober ' '"' 'Rum Did It." The fact that the abuse of ardent spirits is the cause of a lare pro portion of the crimes committed is :a startling one, but the fact that criminals made so while under the inflence of liquor try to use that as a shield is one which is fraught with still more danger to the com munity. The recent brutal murder n a New York horse-car, and the plea of the prisoner that lie was under the inlluence of liquor at the time, and did not know what he was about, is a case in point. Why was he under the influence of it? and who suffered because he was ? His victim has already suffered death; and now must he be turned loose again, to guzzle himself rav ing drunk, only to murder some other peaceable citizen ? ThL maudlin sentimentality has gone about far enough. The plea of in etoxication should never be allowed in palliation of crime. We say, with the Tribune, that a murder committed under the aggravation of liquor makes the crime even worse. Such a ruling, that journ al believes, is not unknown to courts, it is, at any rate, a plain dictate of common sense, public morality and public safety. The man who voluntarily brings him self into an irrational condition is morally, and ought to be legally, responsible for the crimes he may then commit. Give drunkards the license to murder, and you have doubled the dangers of life in great cities; besides encouraging drunk enness, and bringing justice to an open shame. We think it the worse use you can put a man to to hang him; but, so long as the law says that death shall be the penal- ty for murder, the law should be strictly enforced, and the fact that a man was rum-crazy while in the commission of a capti tl offense should rather tell against him than D in his favor. To say that a man shall not be held entirely responsi ble lor murder because he commits the crime while drunk, would be to place it in the power of any malicious, blood-thirsty ruffian to take the life of any person who may have offended him, with per fect impunity. It would only be necessary for him to get drunk, and then he could operate with en tire safety. The man who knows that passions are slumbering in his bosom, which need only the stim ulus ot alchohol to set them m motion, is guilty the moment he places the poisonous draught to his nps, ana lor wnatever oilenso he may commit while insane by his Own act, he should beheld strictly lespqjnsioie. it a man is incompe tent to take care ot himself, let the btate take charge of him, and keep him away from all intoxicants. nub is ourmcuiou tor the treat- IllOllt lf oil ri ...1, 1 " 1 .u v an im.li w no tu nuc to ex cess. A drunkard is a criminal, and snouiu no taken care ol as such. It is stated by those who have examined the files of the city news papers, that 3Ir. Columbus Delano has been present in Washington since he was appointed Commis-Monin- of Internal Revenue and Secretary of the Interior only one day in "live of the whole time. Since entering the Cabinet, he has ebeen absent more than half the time. And yet he has cooly drawn his salary for every hour, as if on actual duty, and, like the President, put out at round rates of interest besides. His Christian princples have not induced him ever to de mote the large sum of the people's money thus appropriated to any ybject of charity. Mr. Cameron, Mr. Delano, Gen. Porter, of the President's household, and other members of the King, have been engaged in a railroad speculation in Georgia, with Cullock, Blodgett fc Co., which serves to explain the Secretary's absence. Meanwhile, the great business of the Interior Department is sadly in arrears, and in a state of great confusion. X- 1 Newspaper Work- A recent writer pointedly and truthfully remarks that journalism is the only profession which is de nied the privilege of privacy. The Lawyer, Doctor and Preacher do their work in private, and no weighty personal responsibility attaches to them on anccount of it. Bnt the journalist is a mark for the public eye, and his every movement is open as the course of the sun. Moreover, the work ot the press is continuous, as well as constantly public. There is no rest for the weary. Space is no more annihilated by telegraph than time by journalism. The even ing and morning are not merely the first day but all the seven. Night is annihilated as to all its quantities of repose. Every min ute of every hour of the twenty four is occupied by some workers doing some work that shows itself in the newspapers of the day and afternoon. Repetition is as im possible as rest. Facts are ever new. Comments must be as fresh as facts, and the edition is the re morseless giant that eats up all the seconds. The making of a news paper is perpetual motion in a thousand fields. In such a work, demanding ceaseless effort, per mitting no pause, exacting eternal and ever varying exercises, it is impossible for wheat to be unmix ed with chalT, for accuracy not to be impaired by mistake, for in justice not occasionally to be done. The Chicago Tribune asks and receives 22,000 for a column of advertisements one year. The bus iness men of Chicago are keen to pay it. There is one house in Cin cinnati that pays 84,000 a week for advertising. There are several in Cleveland, even, who pay as high as $10,000 a year. Somehow those men don't break up; a liberal advertiser never does. 713 STILL AT HIS OLD STAXT), CORNER OF MAIN am. SIXTH STREETS OREGON CITY", OREGON. .
