A Rich Document.
o Gen. Butler is to-day the great
est bore and imposition the llepub
lican party is compelled to carry,
lie is determined by hook or crook,
to keep himself in the public eye
and ear, regardless of how much
lie disgraces the party to which
he professes to be attached, or im
perils the principles he is supposed
'to uphold. Such men are never of
dpse to any one but themselves. Im
practicable as they are insincere,
you dare not rely on their perform
ances, or trust their professions.
"Why can't Grant give Butler a
rovingocommission to visit and re--snain
irbEurope for the next two
years, and give ns a report on the
moving cause of French revolution
He should do this for Butler or
once more bottle him."
Grant tried making war upon
Butler once, but the Beast prepared
a nine-column article on Ulysses
for the Xe irork Herald, 'which
was put in type and a proof sent
to the President. Grant read the
damaging review of his life and
career, and then like Capt. Scott's
coon, he came down at once, lie
uncorked Butler, took him to his
bosom, made him a familiar friend,
and elevated him to the position of
counsellor and confidential adviser.
The country was astonished at the
suddeif'reconcilliation of two men
geemed to hate each other so bit
terly. That article, which was put
in type for the Xew York Herald
but which was afterwards with
drawn, did the business. Grant
cow$re? before the printed assault
of Butler, and the pen proved to
be mightier than the sword. We
LopCQthe sketch of Grant by But
ler may yet see the light. It
would prove a prof'uond sensation.

Social Honor-
Every person should cultivate a
niecisense of honor. In a hundred
dilforent ways this most fitting ad
junct of the true lady or gentle
man is often tried. For instance,
one is the guest of a family where,
perhaps,' the domestic machinery
does not run smoothely. There is
a, sorrow in the house unsuspected
by the outer world. Sometimes is
a dissipated son, whose conduct is
a shame and grief to his parents;
sometimes a relative, whose eccen
tricities and peculiarities are a
cloud on the home. Or, worst of
all, husbaud and wife may. not be
in accord, and there may be often
bitter words spoken and harsh re
criminations. In any one of these
eases the gu st is in honor bound
to be blind and deaf as far as peo
ple without, are concerned. If a
gentle word within can do any good
it may well be said ; but to go
forth? Riid reveal the shadow of an
unhappy secret to any one, even
your nearest friend, is an act of in
delicacy and meanness almost un
paralled. Once in the sacred pre
cincts of any home, admitted to its
privacy, sharing its life, all that
you see and hear is a sacred trust,
t is as really contemptible to gos
sip of such tilings as it would be to
steal the silver or borrw the books
and forget to return them. C'ol
utnb'ui Herald.

Thre is in Xew York an insane
desire to make pleasure a business
and set aside the laws of decency
and fttoridity ; and unfortunately
the vices of the, metropolis are as
faithfully coppied and imitated as
the fashions. If the horrible pesti
lence of immorality, with which
many gay, bold and brilliant wo
men in that city are tainted,
spreads through other States, the
family, which is the corner-stone of
civilization, will be in great danger
and with our boasted form of
government. For, let pleasure be
once madtMhe business of life, and
family, fame, fortune and countrv,
everything that opposes it, will be
swept away in a torrent of liceu
tioijsness. If there is auy law for
the sirplvcssion of publications det
rimental to morality and the best
interests of society, it should be
enforced to stille the impure aspira
tions of free-love journalism.
Xi:vi:n Forsake a Fin end.
When enemies .gather around,
when sickness falls on the heart,
when the world is dark and cheer
less, is the time to try true friend
ship. They who turn from the
scene of distress, betray their hv
pocrisy, and prove that interest
only moves them. If you have a
friend who loves you, -who lias
studied your interest and happi
ness, be sure to sustain him in ad
versity. Let him feel that his
former kindness is appreciated, and
that his love is not thrown away.
Beal lidelity may be rare, but it
exists in the heart. They only
deny its worth and power" who
never loved a friend or labored to
make a friend happy.
