Johnson's Opinion about Men-
A correspondent of the Cincin
nati CommcrclalatQy interviewed
ex-President Johnson, at Knox
ville, Tenn. Ho says :
I asked 3Ir. Johnson what he
thought cF Gen. Sherman as a
Democratic nominee for the Presi
dency. "Sherrna.n,,i said he, "is a
smart man and a shrewd man.
There is no doubt but that he is
looking forward to the Presidency,
and if he can't get it from one
party, he intends to from the
other. lie is not very particular
about parties. In course of time
lie expects to be President, but he
T is in no particular hurry " about it.
ellis chief aim new is not to lose
popularity, and to be ready when
the golden moment comes, lie is
a military man, and don't care
much about parties. lie is a good
deal as Grant was nftcr the close
of the war. That little fellow h id
auitc a notion of going with the
l)emocracy for awhile."
"lie was formerly a Democrat,
was he not ?"
"Xo, lie wasn't anything. lie
didn't have sense enough. He
has got no head of his own. Sher
man is as much smarter man than
him as you can imagine. Fre
quently they have both come in to
tjcc me on business. Grant always
stood back and let Sherman do the
talking. The little fellow felt his
inferiority, took a back seat and
let Sherman transact the business.
Sherman is a man, while Grant is
nothing. Yes, sir, he is just noth
ing." "But the liepublicans will be
apt to renominate him, don't von
think
"Appearances indicate that they
will."
"They have got him, and seem
inclined to hold on to him V"
"Xo," replied .Mr. Johnson ; "lie
has got them. They can't get rid
of him. lie is m, and intends to
remain in. lie has got the pal ron
age and that infamous Ku-Klux
bill to aid him. That Ku-Klux
law is a damnable infamy. Twenty

the American people like elec

Ths Verdict of a Jury of Boys.
Vriicn Dr. Nathaniel Prentice
taught a school in lioxburv, Mass.,
hs was very much of a favorite,
but his patience at times would get
nearly exhausted by the infraction
of school rules by the scholars.
On one occasion, in a wrathy way,
he threatened to punish the first
boy detected in whispering, with
six blows of the ferule, and appoint
ed some detectors. Shortly after,
one of these detectors shouted :
"Master, John Zeigler is whis
pering." John was called up and asked
if it was a fact. (John, by the
way, was 'a favorite both of the
teacher and his schoolmates.)
"Yes," answered John, "I was
not aware what I was about. I
was intent on working out a sum
and requested the one who set
next to reach me the arithmetic
that contained the rule which I
wished to see."
The doctor regretted his hasty
threat, but told John he could not
suffer him to whisper and escape
the punishment, and continued:
"1 wish I could avoid it, but I
cannot without a forfeiture of my
word, and a consequent loss of my
authority. I will leave it to any
three scholars you may choose to
mention whether or not I remit the
'punishment."
John said he would agree to
thai, and immediately called out
G. S., T. D., and D. P. I). The
doctor told them to return a ver
dict, which they soon did, after
consultation, as follows:
"The master's word must be
kept inviolate John must receive
the threatened punishment of six
blows of the ferule; but it must
be indicted on volunteer provies,
and we, the arbitrators, will share
the punishment by receiving, each
of us, two of the blows."
John, who had listened to the
verdict, steps up to the doctor, and
with outstretched hand exclaims :
".Master, here is my hand ; they
shan't be struck a blow ; I will re
ceive the punishment."
The doe! or, under pi ence of
wiping his face, shieleded his eyes,
and telling the boys to go to their
seats, said he would think of it.
I believe lie did think of it to Ins
dying dav but the punishment was
never inflicted.
