A Littlt2 Swry os Grant. The
Romoko (Virginia) Times publish

told by one of the Methodist min

Conference. We do not recollect
of ever seeing it in print, and we
think that it is too good to be lost.
It is as follows :
During the war a "Conftd." was
captured by the Vankees, and hap
pened to be taken to Gen. Grant's
head-quarters'. After being q mo
tioned by the General, the old
"Coufed." asked him where he was
going.
"I am

After eyeing the General for sev

said:
"General Grant, you can't iro to
Iiichmond, for Gen. Lee is there;
you can't go to Petersburg, lor
Gen. Beauregard is there; you
can't go to Heaven, for Stonewall

American history is full of curi
ous incidents. For instance three
of our Presidents died on the anni
versary of the Fourth of July
namely, John Adams, Thomas Jef
ferson and James Monroe.
Of t he first six: Presidents, four
of them were taken from the oflice
of Secretary of State and the ot her
two being tirst elected could not
jorform its duties. From this fact
arose the precedent that makes the
Secretary of the Treasury which is
the case in Great Britain.
No less than live of the greatest
American statesmen were born in
the same year 1782: Daniel Web
ster, John C. Calhoun, Thomas II.
Benton; Martin Van Buren and
Lewis Cass. From 1800 to 1805
only tyro persons filled the office of
Chief Justice of the United States
John Marshal and lioirer B.
CD
Taney.
But two men in the United States
have, as they say in Odd Fellow
ship, passed through their "chairs,"
been Governors of States, held a
first claos foreign mission, been the
head of the Cabinet, the Vice Pres
ident and President their names
are. Thomas Jefferson and Martin
Van Buren.
G'hrec Presidents died in oflice
Harrison, Taylor and Lincoln.
Not long ago a gentleman had
occasion to reprove ins little son,
aged 2:1 years, for an offence which
Chad upon other accasious called
iUjith words of Correction. The
parent closed with, "now Willie, I
don't want to speak to you again
about this!" which was promptly
and very dec-id :-dly responded to
Gas folLyws: "Well pa! I dosen't
"want you to!" There was nothing
ofurthur to be said, but the father
has concluded that that boy needs
watching.
