TOWN AM) COUMV
The Democratic City Committee of
'Oregon City, at their meeting, on fcatnr
'duy, the 22d inst, recommended the lol
VriiKKEAS. It is apparent to all that
'the City Government has become deeply
involved in debt, mainly because its funds
have been misapplied ; and,
Whkiieas, Our ci:y schools have be
come a byword and disgrace to C3 as a
''Jltsijlved. That we invite nil citizens
without respect lo party to meet with us
in Convention for the purpose of nominat
ing candidates lor city ofiices who will
bring about a reformation of the abuses
above alluded to.
The Convention will be held at Myers'
II, ill, on .Saturday evening. April 2Dth,
'l6ll, at T i o'clock. Let all who are in
favor of a reformation of our city affairs
Dy order of the
Ti:n to IHyt.jw Oregon Lodo No. 3
and Kebeeca Degree Lodge No. 2, of the
'independent Order of Odd Fellows of
Oiegon Citv. with a few invited guests-
making in all about one hundred and
fifty person, lefi Oregon City at 7 o'clock
on boaid of the steamer Dayton, on the
morning of April 2o"ih. 1871. to ceiebratf
the fifty-second anniversary of the institu
tion of the order in America, by a pic nic
excursion to Dayton, with the Oregon
City Lrass Hand on board, who by their
presence ami music are entitled to many
thanks for the pleasure and happiness
imparted. Arriving iit Dayton at Hi
o'clock where Yamhill Lodge No. 20 and
Occidental Lodge No. 30. I. O. (). F. with
many friends were to welcome our arrival,
and thronu'h their kindness, we found
tables and seats prepared in a beautiiul
grove l,r the reception of the ample and
abunditit supply of excellent eatables
J:rovid.J by the ladies of the Older.
. After having done ample justice to the
eatables thus abundantly set before us the
Orders were again formed and murched
to the M. K. Church where we were most
interestingly entertained in listening to an
nbh and instructive address delivered by
Judge Terry, Kight Woithy Grand .Secre
tary of the Grand Lodge of Oregon.
After the conclusion of the exerces at
the church we were t'lt-n marched to the
beautiful Hail of Yamhill Lodge No.
20 where, by the kindness of the
Members of the order. i:i Yamhill,
we were agreeably interta'ued until -li
o'clock, when we again went on board of
the Dayton and steamed away amid the
eheers. shouts and many expressions and
good feeling t all. We arrived at
Oregon City at 7. J o'clock with ont a single
'occurrence having transpired to mar or in
any way stop the (low of expressions of
joy and happiness, all feeling abundantly
and well repaid for the expense incurred
and time thus spent.
We were not able to attend and arc
indebted to a friend for the above.
.Tail Pklivkky. Last Sunday night,
the occupants of the county jail, consist
ing ofChas. Hall. Indian Jinx and a fellow
who gave himself up for being a deserter,
took leave of SheiiiV Warner's head
quarters. They dig a hole in the wall
Mtlfietently large to allow themselves to
pa-s out. and I hey showed a great deal of
laz:nes or tl.'-y won Id have removed
enough (f the brick to allow them to
w.t'.k out as men, nl not craw l on their
,st(Ma itd.s like snakes. Indian Jim re
w r tied 'liiO next morning and gave him
self up. no doubt thinking that any man
.who we.s mean enough to take advantage
of such a jail was worse than an Indian,
and a very aCta one at that. The others
are still at, large, ajtd will probably re
nt lin out to enjoy the free air. Hall and
In li t!! Jim ought to have been sent to
Salem to make brick, and the fellow who
was locked up as a deserter, had no busi
ness there. It is supposed that, he passed
himself otf as sue.!', lo aid Hall in his
escape, and probably took the tools in
with Lini wh ui he was arrested to dig out
with. The county has reason to be
grateful to these fellows for concluding to
support tlieme!ves and not living at the
county's expense longer.
Citv Klkctiox. A call for a City Con
vention will be found in this is-uc. The
call sets forth certain fae's which are well
known to our citizens, and very properly
invites all who are in favor of correcting
the abuses complained of to participate in
the selection of candidates for city officers
who will hereafter labor for the interest
of our city and. for th:' benefit of t!w tax
payers. We ask our citizens to. turn out
m tsso to the Convention in order that
the people's choice may be fully expressed,
and then go to work on Monday and elect
them. Good men. men who feel an inter
est in Mie prosperity of our ci'y. who will
administer the affairs for the benefit of the
town, and not for a few oifice-holde rs.
should be placed in nomination, and
elected. Let the people of our c'ty not
place too low an estim i'e on this matter.
The success of proper men for c'ty official'-
will have a groat effect on the pros
perity of our town. Let the people- act
in this matter as becomes sensible men.
Fire. The residence of Dr. Sa.Tarrans
was found on fire last Tuesday afternoon.
The f.re caught on the roof from the chim
ney, and before in was discovered, about,
the entire roof was in a blaze. The firemen
were promptly 011 the spot, and there be
l:cc plenty of water handy, succeeded in
subduing it without any very material
damage. I he extent ot loss will amount
to about SJOO. The house is located in j
the business part of town, adjoining a
livery slab!'', and had that ever caught
and got under headway, the entire block
V. ould have been destroyed, if not the
greater part of the business houses. It
was a very narrow escape, and it was the
promptness of the firemen and waterworks
that saved the town from a partial de
sln.ction. Wagons. Mr. David Smith is mannfac
luring a most superior wagon, which he
calls the Oregon City Wagons. Ihey are
nale of the best material and in point of
fini-h a$e ahead of any Eastern wagon in
market. Mr. S. warrants his wagons and
sells them cheaper than Eistern made
wag mis. We hope our friends throughout
the State will give Mr. S. a call and by
patronizing him encourage home manu
facture. Anothku Ei"K. The house of a squaw
known by the name of Rose, was destroy
ed bv tire last Mondav. All her earthly
estate was consumed in the fiimes. con
sis'ing of several pairs of blankets, some
thirty o.ll dollars in coin, and some
clothing. The squaw is a hard-working
industrious woman, and the community
pympVhize with her in her misfortune.
We did not learn the cause of the origin
of the fire.
Rorsr.EF.Y. A man was arrested last
Sunday evening for stealing some money
at the Phoenix House. He was releaser!
on .Monday, the prosecution being unable
to prove ffrty'thing against bira.
Steamboatixg. Last Monday the P. T
Company's boats commenced an new era
in Willamette steamboating. The boats
now leave Portland and this place daily,
arriving at. Albany the same day. and re
turning the next in time to connect here
with the boat lor Portland. Heretofore
the boats came down from Corvallis to
Salem in one day, and there laid up over
night, thus taking two days to go from
that, place. to Portland.which in nowrdone
in one. The fare and freight have been
considerably reduced and a person can
go from Portland to Albany now for the
small sum of two dollars. This may not
prove profitable to the steamboat Com
pany. but will be hailed with satisfaction
by the traveling public.
Caution-. We would caution our friends
from the country who are in the habit oi
allowing their teams to stand without
being tied in our streets. that this is a verv
dangerous practice while the blasting i
going on over the river. The discharges
from these blasts are very liable to scare
teams and cause them to run off. A little
precaution may save a man the expense
ol a new set of harness and wagon, while
it may save a life or limb of some inno
cent child. We hope our friends will
bear this in mind.
Bkautu-'LL. Among the articles on ex
hibition at the ladies' fair last Tuesday,
was a beautiful white wreath, made by
Miss. Mary Hedges, a young lady who has
been confined to her bed for the paft
three or four years. It was made ol white
feathers and the flowers are the very pic
ture of nature. The wreath may be seen
at the store of Mr. Myers.
Sek!ol:sly III,. A dispatch was received
in this place by the relatives of Capt. Sam
Holmes, last Sunday, stating that he was
lying dangerously ill at the Dalles. A
subsequent dispatch, reports him improv
ing and out of dinger, which will be
pleasing news to his many friends.
Suiter and F.vin. The supper and fair
given by the ladies of the Episcopal
Church, last Tuesday evening, was a
splendid success, as usual. The receipts
were fully as much as was anticipated, the
supper was splendid, and everything
passed off to the entire satisfaction of all
Nkakly Dkowxel). A little boy, about
five years of age, Georgie Chapman, came
ne ir being drowned last Monday. The
little fellow got into the pond at the lower
end of town, and was going down the
third time, when a boy rushed to his res
cue an 1 brought him on shore. It was a
very narrow t scape.
Fire. The Chinese wash-house in the
upper end of town caught lire last Tuesday
afternoon and also on Wednesday morn
ing. It being discovered both titles be
fore it got under headway, no damage
was done to amount to any thing.
Caution. Now that the dry weather
has come, we would canton our citizens
to look well to the condition of their
stove-pipes and chimneys. We came near
having a great destruction of property
last Tuesday, which would probably have
been avoiued had the stove-pipe been
cleaned out in time.
Ei.F.enox. At i be meeting of the stock
holders of the Oregon City Manulaciuring
Company, last Saturday, the following
ofiiceis were elected for the the present
year: 11. Jacob, President and .Managing
Agent ; W. L. White. Vice President ; M.
A. Siraiton. Secretary
W. S. Ladd,

L' Tovx. Judge Wait and Mr. Car"

taking depositions in the Carulher's es

the man who claims to be the husbanp ol
.Mrs. Carnthers, has also been in town, and
his deposition taken yesterday.
Commkx;i;i. Blasting was commenced
on the locks last Monday. The contractor
has not got fairly to work yet. but we
learn that active work, with a full fnrce ol
of hands will be commenced next Monday.
We learn from t lie Rev. J. W. Sellwood
that a new series of the Oregon Churchinun
is about to be published in Portland.
The first number will appear about the
1 11 1 It of May. It will be a monthly de
voted principally to the interests of the
Episcopal Church in Oregon and Wash
Gone. W. If. Eaucett, an old resident
of this city, left yesterday to seek a new
