0 O 0 o o O ' Selections for Newspapers. Most people think llie selection of suitable matter for a newspa per the easiest part of the busi ness. I low ;reat an error. To look over IitVy exchange papers dailv, from which the question is not what shall, but what shall not be selo&eil, is no very easy task. If evcrv person who reads a news paper "cou!l have edited it, Ave should have less complaints. Xot un frequently it is the case that an editor looks over his exchange apers for sornethinr interesting " and finds absolutelv" nothintr. Kvcry paper is dryer than a contri bution box and vet something must be had his paper must be it and something must be in ii, and he does the best he can. To an editor who has the least care in "what lie selects, the writing he has to do is the easiest part of his labor. Every subscriber thinks theQpaper is printed for his own beneiit, ami if there is nothing that suits him it must be good for J nothing. As many subscribers as -an editor lias so many tastes he hasPto consult. One wants some thing smart and sound. One likes anecdotes, fun and frolic, and his next door neighbor wonders that a mao of sense w ill put such st uff in his paper. Something spicy comes outoand the editor is a blackguard. Next comes something argumenta tive and the editor is a dull fool. And so, between them all, the loor fellow u'ets the worst of it. They never rellect that what does notqle;is;'t'iem, will please the next man ; but the' insist that it the paper does not please them, it is O good lor nothing, and stop it im mediately. , a -e" ; (Ikapiuc. A Mississippi paper, which keeps a reporter expressly for description, has the following picture ot a candidate for ollice ol the party whom it opposes: J l is head is about as large as a cooifs and recedes so rapidly from the roof of liis nose that if a stream of water were poured perpendicu larly upon his brow, more of it would run off the back of his head than off his face. His organs of intellection, if he ever had any, have vacated and taken up their abode in the posterior pavt of his brain which makes tin cerebellum :ppear like a market basket hung to the back of his head. His teeth seem to be all gone, and his gums cloe up to keep his chin out ot danger. His nose looks like the aimer holes in a musknielon rind. Tin-: Yikk. If you wisli to hv liappv aiil have peace in the fam ily, never reprove yonr imsbaml in company, even if that reproof be ever soli;j.ht. If he be irritalel, seak not an anirry word. In-lil-i ere nee sometimes will produce un happy cousequerrees. .Always leel an interest in what, your husband undertakes; and if he is perplexed o discouraged, assist him by your smiles and happy words.
