An attempt w as made to poison Charles
B. Louis in a dead-fall.
John Foster was stabbed on the stairs
of the Police Court last night, by Thomas
Dougherty, one of thf parties arrested for
the alleged r.ttempt at poisoning Louis;
The stabbing, for which no cause was
given, was done with a pocket knife. The
wound was inflicted in the losver part of
the abdomen, and is quite serious. Dough
erty also stabbed another man in the lip.

An interesting suit was np before his
Honor Judge Deady, yesterday, no less
than a suit to test the extent and" power ot
the Fifteenth Amendment.
William C. McKay. the plaintiff, is three
fourths Indian blood. His father, who
was a half-breed Indian, came to Astoria
from New York in the vessel s.'iit out by
John Jacob Astor in 1-811. to open trade
with the Indians and establish the above
town. He was one of its founders, and
there married ;t native of the, place. The
plaintiff was born in Astoria iu 1823, and
lias lived there since. Last June, he. as a
citizen of the United States, presented his
ballot, claiming that right from the Fif
teenth Amendment to the Constitution.
The judges of election refused to accept
it, and this suit has been brought against
James A. Campbell, as one of the judges,
principally, we should judge, to test the
validity of the Fifteenth Amendment.
The problem requiring solution is, are
the Indians included in the provisions of
the amendment, and if they are. can this
man be called an American citizen, when
he was bom in a country which was occu
pied jointly by Bthisli and American citi
zens, under the government of the Hudson
Bay Company. The question is an inter
esting one. The Court adjourned w ithout
rendering a decision.

Charles Lamar has brought a suit in
Justice Moreland's Court, against John

The deposition of the plaintiff was taken
on Thursday. We learn that Philiipi has
also assumed the position of plaintiff, and
has s ited Charles Lamar for $30,000 for
defamation of character.
We learn that the timber has already
been cleared for about eighteen miles oi
ihe proposed road ft-', in Kaiami north

seventy-five Chinaman. The contractor

pamphlets, but as soon as the inhabitants

jumped aboard, and returned to this city,
leaving his overcoat and some trinkets be
hind, owing to the hastiness of his flight.
We learn that the ladies in the vicinity ol
the Tenth street school have passed a res
olution to give Loryea a free ride, and a
suit of clothes made lrom the apparel of
an aquatic bird. By the tima this matter
is ended, perp haps, the great inventor may
find himself enabled to exist without the
use of either clothes or cutis.
A Salem paper asks us why freights
cost as much from Portland to that place
as it costs lrom San Francisco to Portland?

gest that it apply for iis information at
these places, which are 'probably better

we are.

Slater, Congressman elect, has gone over
land. Both these gentlemen lake their
seats oti the organization of Congress on
the 4th of March.
Dr. Loryea has dispatched an agent
through the Willamette valley, scattering
his obscene quack medicine bills through
out the country. If some public spirited
citizens would present him with a new
suit of tar and feathers it would be very
apt to keep others from debasing them
selves in the services of an arrant hum
bug and quack.
Akuoganck. The reception given by
Grant to the Pacilic delegation headed by
-our George," was very unkind to say the
least, and m view of the past, is deserving
of a much stronger epithet. The time is
certainly within the memory of the pres
ent autocratic ruler of the White House,
when the appointment of Cabinet officers
was he'd to be a matter exclusively with
in the coi.trol of the Radical politicians.
Grant has surely not forgotten that lie was
accused of violating his word to Johnson
and his Cabinet., for the purpose of keep
ing Secretary Stanton in office. and that (he
charge was fully proven against him. The
Tenui e-of Ollice Act has only been repeal
ed at this session, and Woods might well
be excused for being unprepared for as
sudden a change in the great leader of his
party. The President is reported as say
ing that it was a "family concern." If he
alluded to the family of 'Grant. Dent it Co..
it is truly a very delicate mailer to inter
fere viih. and he was right in resenting
