The Absurdity of Tight Lacing.
There would be no tight lacing
if o-irls could be raade to under
stand this simple fact that men
dread the thought of marrying a
woman who is subject to fits of
irritable temper, to bad headaches
and other ailments we need not
mefftion, all of which everybody
knows are the direct and inevitable
product of the compression of the
waist. Men like to see a small
waist, certainly, but there is a very
crrcat difference between the waist
wKfch is well formed and in pro-:
portion with the rest of the figure,
and a waist which is obsiously and
ort.ififinllv pomnrcssed. to the de
struction of that easy and graceful
carriage, which is one of the chief
charms of a woman's appearance.
An unnaturally compressed waist
is far more certain of detection
than a mass of false hair or a faint
dusting of violet powder. The
rnurosf, vonth who enters a ball
room Q'an pick out the women
who have strightened themselves
artificially ; and there is no more
0 TT-ndv himdfc for his harmless
jokes. If the young lady who, to
obtain the appearance of a dragon
fly, has been subjecting herself to
rfvniswWiible nain. and who has
w - - A J
been laving up for herself a pretty
store of ailments, which only want
time to pronounce themselves,
could only see the stare of scarcely
disguised contempt, and under
stand the scornful pity which greets
the result of her labor, we should
haygp a change of fashion and it
is merelv a lasmon, in ere is no
thing intrinsically beautiful in an
unnaturally small waist, and if it
were the fashion to go into the
opposite extreme, women would
see beauty in padded waists: It is
n great misfortune that popular
taste never alters in this as it al
ters in other matters. Observers
may notice with what a regular
ohh find fW wide skirts and nar.
ml
row skirts alternate : how we have
, - - . - . , - - ICC
the peg-top garments of men fol
lowed by the sailor's widc-ankled
0 attire; how square-pointed boots
give place to peak-toed boots, and
how the peak-toes go out again
for the square points. Through
all changesoworaen remain true to
onlv one fashion. "Whether her
clothing is as long and lank as that
of a Grecian virgin, or whether she
builds around the lower half ot her
figure a rotund and capacious st ruc
ture of steel, she is forever faithful
to the tradition of a small waist;
and she will weaken, she will
make her hands red, she will incur
headache, she will crack her voice
and she will ruin her digestion, all
to produce a malformation which
wise men regard with pity and
fools with derision.

Marriages in
the
far North.
' T" XT AT 1- C . . . . 1
Sir: Your narrative of " A woman
who goes a thousand miles away to marry
a man she never saw," reminds me of the
cool and unceremonious way the officials
of the Hudson's Day Company havo of
getting their wives, especially those who
live in the most northern part of what was
formerly known as the Hudson's Bay Com
pany territories, such as the Mclven.ic.
Athabasca and Euglish River Dirtricls.
la these districts marriageable women
are few and far between, except, indeed,
the pure indian women, who formerly
were considered good enough to satisfy
the fauciea of the gentlemen of the ser
vice. Since the Red River District, however.
Las been settled with Europeans, Canadi
ans and half-breeds there are many fair
w hite and halt breed women to be found,
more suitable to the fancies of the gentle
men of the northern, districts, and their
tastes have therefore undergone a change.
They will not degrade themselves now by
i i:er;ns: r".ng w.ih the pure Indians, 1 u
generally send down word to some friend
in the settlement that they are in want of
a wift, and beg bhii to select one to the
best of his ability, placing entire confi
dence in bis choice.
The recommendation and choice of the
young lady are generally made through
the missionary, as the clergy, of course
are supposed to know the character of
their fair flock.
As soon as all the necessary prelimina
ries have been arranged, the young lady
take her departure for her northern home
with the first brigade of boots that leaves
for that district. After a six weeks voy-!
age she meets her future lord and husband,
gets married to him5, after a half hour's
acquaintance, by the minister who is await
ing her arrival.
The distance is perhaps not so great as
that of our fair friend who went off to
China, bat if one takes it into considera
tion that these voyages of six weeks to the
McKenzie River District are made in open
row boats, with nothing but the open stern
sheets to sit in during the day, and a can
vas tent fojq the night to sleep under, with
the disagreeable accompaniment of myri
ads of mosquitos to torment them the
' whole of the long voyage, the boldness of
the undertaking and experiment of ac
cepting a husband in (hat crude fashion
isQomewhat more venturous and daring
than most of the young ladies of these
more southern climes would like to haz
ard their happiness on.
This lasbioa of getting a wife chosen for
them is by no means uncommon among
the officials of the Hudson's Bay Compa
ny's service, especially those who are
quartered in the very remote districts re
ferred to.
As.Old Hrnsox's Bat Max.
There is an item going the rounds that
women can nrevent red nosea iu winter
bv keenin their months shut. This is a
fabrication, gotten np by husbands, who
want a rest.
The German Credauer Ztitung estimates,
in eliborate terms, the whole cost of the
war to Germany, thus far, at about $1,-
000.000,000.
"Pa'' said a little friend of ours, "what "s
the use of giving our little pigs so much
milk-They make hogs of themselves."

Do you have spells of short breathing or

Did You Ever Think
that those bold defiant.encrgetic, persevering, .

whose generatie organs are in perfect

Von never hear such men complain of be

they cannot succeed in business; they don't
become pad and discouraged ; they are all
ways polite and pleasant in the company ot

How many men, from badly cured diseases,
from the effects of self-abuse and excesses,

those organs that has reduced the general
