THE HICKORY SHIRT.
A fig for your upper ten boys,
v W ith their canes and cigars and eye
glasses. Their dandified airs and soft eyes, -
.Winking down on each girl that passes ;
They may guzzle clambake and cham
pagne. And pride in their rery high birth j
Bat give me the lad that goes plain,
O The boy in the hickory shirt.
lie is round as a barrel and brown
As the peach in the mii-autumn sun ;
From the sole of his foot to bis crown,
lie is brim full of frolic and fun,
Not afraid of hard work or of cold.
lie is fearles3 and rough, without hurt ;
Kit honor's as good as pure gold
The boy with the hickory shirt.
GTo say his big heart cannot beat
With kindness for parents and brothers,
Would picture his traits incomplete,
If his sisters shared not with others.
In fact, he is a broth of a blade.
I can't fathom how much be i3 worth;
But the poor girl's fortune is made
That gets Jim with the hickory shirt.
She Never Leaves Him-
O
t rrir of tlif pTivppY of a man as
nlie passes through the world,'- as a
man visited by misfortune! How
often is he left by his fellow men
to sink under the weight of his
afflictions unheeded and alone!
One friend of his own sex for
gets him, another abandons him,
a third perhaps betrays him; but
woman, faithful woman, follows
him in his affliction with an unshak
en affection; paves the changes of
feeling, of his temper, embittered
by the disappointments of the
world, with highest of all virtue;
in resigned patience ministers to
his wants ev.cn when her own are
hard and pressing; she weeps with
him, tear for tear, in his distress,
and is the first to catch and reflect
a ray of joy, should but one light
up his countenance in the midst of
his sufferings, and site never leaves
him in his misery while there, re
mains one act of love, duty or com
passion to be performed. And at
last, when life and sorrow come to
an end, she follows him to the
tomb with an ardor of affection
which death itself cannot destroy.

To Clear a House of Vermin-.
"Burleigh" of the Boston
Journal, says: "I tell you. ladies, a
secret that maybe worth knowing;
a new way to clear your house of
vermin has been found.. So com
plete is the remedy that men offer
to rid the premises of pestilential
nuisances by contract. The article
is sold under the name of French
Green, and other high sounding
names, but the article is dry green
pajnt. Six cents worth used about
any house will "clear the kitchen1'

Is this not Startling? The
ordinary expenditures of the Fed
eral Govcrment from the 30th of
.Tune 1861, to the 30th of June
1869 eight years, were very near-
Jv three times as much as the or
dinary expenditures of the Federal
Goverment for the preceding sevcti-
ty-two years, and the ordinary e
penditures of these seventy-two
vears embraced the cost of the
wars with Great Britain, the In
dims and Mexico. They also em
o braced the purchase of Louisiana,
Florida, Texas, New Mexico and
California.
Is it not startling that eight years
of partisan Republican rule should
cost as mnc'i as the seventy-two
vears rule bv all other parties?
Does this not show that something
must have been wrong? Is it not
conclush e evidence that there has
been profligacy, wastefulness and
an unrighteous use of the public
moiiey? It furnishes a guide-board
declaring :v the necessity for a
change.

WHOSE SUFFERINGS
HAVE BEEN
Protracted from Hidden Causes,
AND WHOSE CASES REQUIRE
Prompt Treatment
to render existence desirable.
If vou are suffering or hare suffered, from
involuutary discharges, w hat effect does it
produce upon your general health ?, Do you
feel weak, debilitated, easily tired ? Does a
little extra exertion -produce palpitation of
the heart.' Uoes your liver, or urinary or
gans, or your kidneys frequently get out of
order ? Is your urine sometimes th;ck,nnlky
or flocky, or is it ropy on settling ? Or does
a thick scum rise to the top? (Jr is a sedi
ment at the bottom after it has stood awhile?
Do. you have spells of I short breathing or
dyspepsia? Are your bowels constipated?
Do you have spells of fainting, or rushes of
blood to the head ? Is your memory im
paired ? Is your mind constantly dwelling
on this subject? Da you feel dull, listless,
moping, tired of company, of life ? Do you
wish to be left alone, to get away from every
body ? Does any little thing make you start
or jump? Is your sleep broken or restless?
Is the lustre of your eye as brilliant ? The
bloom on your cheek as bright? Do you en
joy yourself in society as well ? Do you pur
sue your business with the same energy?
Do you feol as much confidence in yourself?
Are your spirits dull and flagging, given to
fits of melancholy? If so do not lay it to
your liver or dyspepsia. Have you restless
nights? Your back weak, your knees weak,
and have but little appetite", and you atti ib
ute this to dyspepsia, or liver complaint?
self-abuse, venereal diseases badly cured.and
sexual excesses, are all capable of producing
a weakness of the generative organs. The
organs of generation, when in perfect health,
..'.. MAKE THE MAN.
Die! You Ever Think
that those bold. defiant, energetic,perseveringr.
successful business men, are always those
whose generatie' orgaus are in perfect
health ?
You never bear such men complain of be
ing melancholy, of nervousness, or palpita
tion of the heart. They are never afraid
they cannot succeed iu business; they don't
become sad and discouraged they are all
ways polite and pleasant in the company of
ladies, and look you and them right in the
face none of your downcast looks or other
meanness about them. I do not mean those
who keep the organs inflated by running to
excess. These will not only
RUIN THEIR CONSTITUTIONS,
but also those they do bu-incss with or for.
How many men, from badly cured di.-eases,
from the effects of self-abuse and excesses,
have brought about that state of weakness in
those organs that has reduced the general
system so much as to induce almost every
other disease
IDIOCY, LUNACY,
PARALYSIS,
spinal affections, suicide, and almost every
other form of disease which humanity is heir
to, and the real cause of the trouble scarcely
ever suspected, and have doctored for all but
the right one.
Diseases of these organs require the useof
a muretic.
HELMBOLD'S
