1I5 many crushed hearts have experi
enced the unutterable sorrows and anguish
which are well but faintly pictured in the
following Unes :
He comes not ! I have watched the moon
QSink slowly in the dusky West,
And. like the fading of her light,
llatb hope died out in my sad brea3t.
'Tis midnight, but he comc3 not yet ;
All vainly still I watch and weep
How long. O Father! O, how long
Must 1 these lonely vigils keep ?
O ! for one hour- of happiness
Such as I felt when love's deep spell
"Was woven first around my heart,
(rEYe from shrine my idol fell ;
But now, alas ! a fearful doom
Of wretchedness, and woe, and feat,
Is min( the fete to watch and pray.
With aching heart and bitter tears.
listen to the ceaseless stroke
Which marks the weary hours go by,
And start and tremble at'tbe sound
Of e'en the night wind's gentle sigh.
)gaze upon nrpchildren fair.
w And listen to their low, soft breath.
Till, in my broken heart's despair.
Iclmost wish their sleep were death,
A blight upon the drunkard's' child
Rests ever, from life's opening morn ;
O ! must my loved ones feel the sting
Of the woild's cold, unfeeling scorn ?
Dear Saviour! thou whose soul' hath felt
Deep sorrow's tearful agony,
O ! fill my weary, fainting heart
With strength that onlv comes from thee.
Forty
Years Confinement.

In Greeii Villa ere. three miles

south of 3Iorn'.stovn Charles
Crowell, a maniac, i confined. He
is a native of the place, and is now
sixty-ight fears old, forty of
which he has been confined, and
the most of the time a" raving ma-
3 uiac. He is confined in a room six
feet by eight, chained to the floor,
with not a rag of clothing on him,
i?ave a quilt thrown over him for
the occasion, nor an article of fur-
O niture in the room, save thc straw
on which. he was perched in a sit
ting posture, with his feet drawn
li) under him.
The room had a door at one end
an opening on the other with a
shutter, which was open. The
room was ceiled with boards, and
was in the. rear of the dwelling of;
the person who has the charge of!
him. In this room, or in a simi-1
ar one a few feet off, he has spent
iorty years ot his lite, thirty-live
of which it would be safe to sav.
as destitute of clothing as he was
born into the world. He is now
comparatively harmless and has
lost the power of locomotion, ex
cept as he crawls. lie has been
successively cared for by a mother
a sister, and a niece, who is de,
voted in her attentions to him, at
times even putting the food which
he eats, into his mouth.
Years ago, over ahundrcd bed
0 quilts, which those in charge had
mado for hurt had been torn in
strips, and even now, everything
he gets hold of is served the same
way; it is therefore from necessity
tlirttJie goes naked. On inquiring
as to the cause of ins condition
and what were his habits, we were
told that when a young man he
was ofCgreat promise and bright
parts; lie was a great student in
the bible, a large part of which he
knew by heart, and even now in
his wretched state, he will repeat
at times whole passages from it.
The only way they can account for
his present condition is from hard
study and a neglect of early med
ical treatment. lie was three
months irpi Xew York asylum be
fore our Trenton institution . was
established, but his case was de
clared incurable. Ho is obliged to
,.be kept chained, as othcrswisc he
would escape; as he has in years
gone bv, to che terror of the neigh
borhood, lie never now attempts
to injure those who wait upon him.
Such another wretched being in
human form cannot be fouud,we
hope, in thc limits ot our State,
ennd yet, as old as he is, he prom
ises to live many years to come.

to render existence desirable.
If roil are suffering or hare suffered from
involuntary discharges, what effect does it
produce upon your general health ? Do you
teel weak, debilitated, easily tired ? Does a
little extra exertion produce palpitation of
the heart ) Does your liver, or urinary or
gans, or your kidneys frequently get out of
order ? Is your urine sometimes thick, ruilky
or flocky, or is it ropy on settling ? Or does
a thick scum rise to the top? Or is a seeli
ment at the bottom after it has stood awhile?
Do you have spells of short breathing or
dyspepsia Are your bowels constipatea i
Do you hare spells of fainting, or rushes of
blood to the head ? Is your memory im
paired ? "Is your mind constantly dwelling
on this subject ? Do you feel dull, listless,
moping, tired of company, of life? Do you
wish to be left alone, to get away from every
body ? Does any little thing makfyou start
or jump ? Is your sleep broken or restless?
Is the lustre of vour eve as brilliant? The
bloom ou your cheek as bright? Do you en
joy yourself in society as well ? Do you pur
sue your business with the same energy ?
Do you feol as much confidence in yourself?
Are your spirits dull and flagging, given to
fits of melancholy? If so do not lay it to
jour liver or dyspepsia. Have you restless
nights ? Your back weak, your knees weak,
and have but little appetite, and you attrib
ute this to dyspepsia, or liver complaint?
