AVIIAT I LIVE FOR.
I live for those who love me,
Whose hearts are kind and trne ;
For the heaven that smiles above ine.
And awaits my spirit, too ;
For all human ties that bind me.
For the task by God assigned me,
For the blight hopes loft behind, me,
Gnd the good that I can do.
I live to learn their story
Who suffered for my sake ;
To emulate their glory,
And follow in their'wake ;
Bards, patriots, martyrs, sages,
The noble of all ages.
Whose deeds crown bitoryrs pages,
And'ime's great volume fills.
I live toCfcoM communion
With all that is divine,
To feel there is a union
'Twixt Nature's heart and mine ;
To profit by affliction,
Heap truth from fields f fiction,.
Grow wiser from conviction.
And fulfill each grand design.
I live to hail that season
liy gifted minds foretold.
Vhen men should live by reason,
And not alone by gold ;
TVhen man to man united.
And every wrong thing righted.
ThePwbogo world' shalf be lighted
As IvJea was of old.
I live for luosc who love me.
For those who know me true :
For the heaven that smile.? above me,
And awaits my spirit, too ;
For the cause that lacks assistance,
For the wrong that needs resistance,
For the future in the distance,
the good that I can do.

The Degradation cf Women.
A Xew York correspondent of
the' San Francisco Evening Jhtlle-
tin graphically pictures the system
of match-making at Long Branch,
which Avill apply to about all the
Q watering places in Christendom,
-where the wives xf Sham, Shoddy
jlihI banipanc aimually congregate
ig Cazar their daughters and where
kiia-ycs and fools ruh for robhery
.and speculation. Of course these
mafrimas and their bejcweled
daughters "have all the rights they
want" and dencunco the ballot

is trilled. There are all sorts of
people from millionaires to million
owners, and from clergymen aod
congressmen cTbwa to gamblers
and horse-jockeys. People think
they arcPenjoying themselves, and
hang about the parlors and cor
ridors in the middle of the day,
much likeOprisoiers in a respecta
ble jail-yard. The bills of the
2iotcls are pretty steep, and none
but those having plenty of money,
venture to stay long. There are
Imlls and parties in as great abun
dance as the hotel managers think
they can stand, or rather as the
people that they facetiously call
"guests," willjbe willing to stand.
Apart from the desire to sniff the
;seu breeze, bathe in the surf, and
out-dress eve9ybody else, the great
object of the ladies who come here,
is to lav the wires for future mat
rimonial combats. Mothers of
marriageable daughters are abundant-and
encountered about as fre
quently as the musquitoes and
sand-iliqs These amiable chicken
hawks are constantly on the look
out, for the double purpose of giv
ing their darling the acquaintance
of as many niceQncn as possible,
4ind keeping them from knowing
the undesirable ones. All around
the corridors of the hotels, and
along the beach after sunset, you
will sec little flirtations in progress,
.and the result will be that the
Jforie Journal, before many
months, will chronicle the engage-
0ment of the wealthy young swell,
3Ir. Blank, to the charming and :
agreeable Miss JUankcss. Then '
when the snows are on our house
tops, and the icicles are pendent
from the leaky gutters, we shall
have a succession of brilliant wed
dings, in which 9 given quantity
of spoons will be united to an
equal quantity of spoons of the
other sex, who will make each
other as uncomfortable as the cir
cumstances will allow."

His stake, too, is the largest in Prus
