The Prussian Military Organization-
0
cTTe Prussian system of military
organization is unlike that of this
country, and a slight sketch of it
may therefore be useful in enabling
our readers to comprehend the m
portance of the conflicts in the
present war, and the number of
troops
encased.
Tl
ic
russian
army is companies, battalions, reg
iments, and corps iVarmec. A
battalion, in active service, consists
oi lour companies of 250 men
each, or 1.000 in all. A recriment
comprises four battalions; a brig
ade, two regiments; a division,
two brigades. To each division arc
attached four squadrons of caval
ry, five batteries of artillery, of six
guns each, id a battery of rifle
men or pioneers. The Corps
'Tarm.ee is regarded as a unit, do.
pendent upon itself and compris
ing within itself all the materials
for sustaining a campaign individ
ual! v. It consists of two divisions
of infantrv. a cavalrv division, of
four regiments, with two batteries
of horse artillery attavhed, besides
the two cavalry regiments attach
ed to each infantry division and a
reserve of artillery consisting of
five field and two mounted batter
er ries. It will thus be seen that a
"batalion contains 1,000 men; a
regiment, -1,000 ; a brigade 8,000 ;
a division, 10,000: and a Corps
c armee,
02,000
infantry. 12,000
cavalrv. besides artillery, held
and mounted, amounting altogeth
er to about 50,000 men. Xow if
cwe apply these statistics to Gener
al bteinmetz s report ol the recent
conflict between Saarbruck and
Forbach, we shall be able to arrive
at a fair idea of the number of
troops en traced on the Prussian
side. The battle was opened by
Fourteenth Division, consisting of
10,000
men.
who were reinforced
by six battalions, three batteries,
and some avalry, showing that
about 25,000 men stormed the
bights of Splcichern. Another
division, the Thirteenth, advanced
wmultaneonsly on Verklingen, cap
tured Farzence, and finally occu
pied Forbach. It thus appears
that no le5s than 40,000 troops
were engaged in the battle on the
side of the Prussians, and taking
artillery and cavalry into account,
the number would probably be
raised to 45,000 the whole of the
troops constituting the First Army
Corps. It seems probable that at
least 100,000 combatants were en
gaged on both sides, in this battle,
and that already from 200,000 to
300,000 men have been brought in
to action in the campaign. When
it is remembered that all this
lighting is but preliminary to the
Qgreat battle which rs now immi
nent, some idea may be formed of
the magnitude of the struggle,
and the extent of the forces en
gaged in itrjon either side. Jiec

Did You Ever Think
that those bold, defiant, energetic,pcrsevering,
successful business men, are always those
whose generati.-e organs are in perfect

Vou never hear such men complain of be

they cannot succeed in business; they don't
become s-ad and discouraged ; they are all
