CHose the dor gently,
Bridle the breath.
O it Utile earth-angel
Is talking with Death ;
Gently he, woes her.
She wishes to stay.
His arms are about her
He bears ber away.
Mti!ic comes floating
Down from the dome ;
Angels are chanting.
The sweet welcome home.
Come, stricken weeper
Come to the bed.
Gaze on the sleeper ;
Our idol is dead.

Smooth out the ringlets, close the dark
eyes.
No wonder such beauty was claimed in
in the skies ;
Cross the hand gently, o'er the white
breast ;
So HJie. a wild spirit strayed from the
blessed ;
Bear her out softly, this idol of ours.
Let her grave slumbers be mid the wild
flower?.
A Question Settled.
Old Joe B was quite an old
man, but hojti c:vh at too fond of
the bottle. When in his capa,
Ids idea tended towards theologi
cal matters, vjiieh he always
avoided in his sobernoments. It
was Saturday afternoon (Connecti
cnt baking dayj, and his good
"wife VvtiRted some wood for the
oov en.
"J'oe, I do wish you would go
and plit some wood. Here it is
nearly 2 o'clock, and the tire in"t
made."c
Joe went to execute his commis
sion, but fearing his physical con
dition was weak, marched to a
neighboring tavern to fortify him
self therein. He returned home
utterly oblivious to r.ll these things
nave his pet theories. Seating
himself on the chair he said : UI
gSay (hie) Jane, do you (hie) think
the Lord (hie) means to burn us
all (hie) up in fire?"
His venerable spouse, being
exceedingly irate did not answer.
Again he repeated the question.
Still an ominous silence.
"fe, do you think the Lord
means to burn us uv in lire ever
lasting
said the now thoroughly
arroused housewife ; "no, you old
fool, not if he waits lor you to
split the wood !"
Q
Ti e Eastern Wheat Chop.
From Eastern advices we learn
that the wheat crop in Maryland
this season is very noor, having
bepi seriously injured by the wet
weather; In Ohio it is line in
quality, but the yield is notabimd
O ant. In Illinois the crop will ap
proximate within three-fourths of
the usual yield, while that of Indi
ana is about two-thirds of an a.ver
age crop. In certain parts of Vir
ginia, especially in the Shenandoah
valley, the crop is very abundant
and of superior quality. "War hav
ing been declared in Europe, bread
stuffs will maintain a figure at
which the wheat raisers of Cali
fornia and the East may expect to
realize handsome proms with their
surplus. S. J Chronicle.
The Crops. Our firmer friends
tell us.thaPthe crops promise bet
ter than at any former season, and
tlat the average is greater this
year than at any former period
since the settlement of the Valley.
Two years since we had a verv
large crop, but owing to the lack
of a market low prices prevailed.
This year we have promise of an
active demand for every spare
poundoof wheat we can produce,
and at prices that will remunerate
the farmer for his labor. W. W.
Statesman.

4 Desires and Possession. A
cheerful man is happy, even it he
possesses little; a fretful man is
unhappy in the midst of afiluenee.
One great difference between a
e wise man and a fool is, the former
only wishes for what he may possi
bly obtain, the latter desires iinnos-
MUiiiue.
A Hostres pity. Courtesy,
in the mistress of a house, consists
in feeding coifversation, never in
usurping it. She is the guardian
of this sjies of saerel tire, but
it must be'aecessible to all.
Passing Timk. There is no
Raying shocks ije so much as that
which I hear very often that a
man does not know how to pass
bis time. It would have been
but ill-spoken by Methuselah in
the nine hundred and sixty-ninth
Year of his age.
An Irish girl at Erie caught an
other girl on the sidewalk who had
on a hoopskirt, stolen from the
party of the first part, and com
pelled her to take them olf and
surrender them, then and there.
The affair created a genuine sen
sation. r
A blind woman in London, 40
years old, foil in love with a young
artisan whom she heard hammer
ing near bv, and, becoming ac
quainted, made J lira presents, and
loaned him 10 to assist him m
business. Learning he intended to
leave, she had him arrested tor
debt, and then induced him to
marry her by offering to release
him.
" Bub, is your sister at home ?"
" Yes, but she won t see you to
night." " Why ?" " Beca tse she
said she was going to have one
more mess of onions if she never
got another bean."
The Book and Stationery estab
lishment of Bancrofts, Market
street, San Francisco, comprises
six floors, each 35x170 feet; the
fixtures in only one of these rooms
costs $20,000. "
Character and Refutation.
There is this difference between
character and reputation . charac
ter is what one really is, reputation
is what he seems to be.
Self-Portraiture. "A man
never portrays his own character
better than by the way and man
ner in which he portrays the char
acter of another."
Forty-seven men who were drawn
as jurors for one county in Georgia,
were excused from service on ac
count of having young babies at
home, and the Court adjourned
until baby season is over.
"Jake, lend me ten dollars till I
sell my dog?" Jake replied sooth
ingly and sympathetically, " O,
Jim, I wouldn't sell him !"
A young man saysjie cured pal
pitation of the heart by the appli
cation of another palpitating heart
