- - - 'msr' :v o O o o o O o o 0 o O o 3 I : o o O G :4 it i M1 ? i ALas of the Farmer. From Colmans' Rami Weill. The farmer, as a farmer, should have aims peculiar to himself. As a man, he should have the aims common to noble humanity, to be and livea, true and honorable man, to !Pa generous friend, a true hus band and father, a frank, manly, high minded citizens, an earnest friend and patron of science, art, improvenuttit; sober, indsutrious, honest, chivalrous, genial in temper forbearing and forgiving. Iut as a farmer he ought to have beyond Qill other aims, those peculiar to the profession of agriculture. Every profession lias its peculiar aims. So it should be with the firmer if li3 would succeed wed. What are the tiy;e aims of the farmer? First of all, he should aim to have a good farm, not simply a passable farm as to soil, arrangements, pro ductiveness but a (jiumbcr one farm, a farm rich of soil, easy to till, conveniently arranged and fenced, well0 watered, drained, guarded against washing, properly divided as to pasturage, meadow, orcharding, tie. To this end he should be dilligent in manuring, deep flowing, draining, rotating, of crpps, fencing and ordering his farm aright. It will not do to be always bleeding a farm. You must feed it or its life blood will Osoon be exhausted. Alany farms, like many liorses, are worked to death and not half fed. Put into the stomach of the farm, which is its soil, enough good manure, or fertil izingQ material, and it will grow fat and faiiVj Take care of your farm as you would a favorite horse. Keep its spirits up and its beauty on by generous feeding 'and care. Let no field or corner be neglected. Peed largely from the manure wag on and carry well with the plow and harrow, then do not overwork it by exhausting 'crops, and you j will have a farm that will shine and do service. Xew farms, like young horses, are often ruined very early. Nev er overwork a young horse, lie must have good care and careful usage till he reaches his maturity at seven or eight years of age. Then his lifoAvill be long and vig orous. So with a new farm. It must not be exhausted at first. Keep its original fertility up and if needed improve it. Xext the gooVt farm comes good buildings, br the family, the stock, the crops and tools. This should be one aim before the farmer. Don't be satis liedow'ith a log house and stable. Crave good buildings and enough of them and cret thtin as soon as you can. Good crops, too, should fdl the farmer's eye. Ordinarily he should be ashamed of a poor crop as the lawyer would a poor speech, or Jhe shoemakor a poor shoe. Get good crops ifethey are to be had. Aim for the best. It is the' good crops hat pay. They are to be by good farming. They don't come at ran dom like April showers. There is science and art in go5d farming, there is theory and practice, there 5s philosophy and work. Go in for good crops by the use of the proper means. STexin order comes stock as an aim of the farmer, good stock capital stock premium stock. Raise the bestcbreeds and the best 'specimens of each breed. Don't keep scrawny crowbaits on the farm. They are a disgrace to any farm, an ought to be to any far mer. With proper pains and care secure the best. They are the eas iest raised, easicstQkcpt, healthiest, pay the best aud Iqgk the best. A farmer should care as much for the looks of his farm and stock as his wife docs for the looks of her bon net. Heashould be a little proud or well satisfied with his good things, as should a true man of his honor or character. A farmer's crops and stock are the criterion of his character as a farmer. As the sluggard is known by his weeds and broken windows so is the far mer by what he raises. lie writes his character -out in living forms all over his farm. If his animals are poor and sharky, they reproach him more sarcastically than can any speech of pen or tongue. If they are fine and lusty they praise him with a voice of living and ro bust eloquence. Then aim for good stock, every farmer of the great, rich West. A good orchard and garden should be among the aims of the farmer. They beautify and adorn his farm; they increase its value ,and profits; they benefit his fami ly; thev load his table with the .daintiest luxuries, they administer to the health of his household ; they are standinpynvitations to his friends to come and visit him; they arc evidences of his intelligence and good taste; they are proofs of his generosity and affection for his family; they" testify to his skill in the fine arts; they cultivate his mind and develop" his manhood. An orchard and a garden are indis pensable on a good farm. lie should aim to be intelligent in Ins profession; not only to be practical, but to be scientific, to know what to do and whv. He should be well read; posted up in all improvements and all the best! methods and he should endeavor to inculcate in the minds of his children a desire to understand the true principles upon which agricul ture, as an enlightened profession, is based. Ilis library should be well stored; his reading table well spread with agricultural papers.; and he should know all that is in them. Thoiough knowledge and thorough practice should be his motto. i. A tavern boaster the other elay, vauntinr,p his knowledge of the world, was asked by a wag at his elbow if he had been in Algebra? "Oh yes," said he, 'T once passed through it on top of a stage." A love-sick youth at Bridgeport, Ct., called at the residence of his inamorata, a day or to ago, at 1 a. r., and insisted upon seeing her. Being refused admission he made such n fuss that a policeman was sent for to remove him. As he went away, he apostrophized the cruel fair one thus: "lioohoo, you've done it now, you've done it now, L!izer!" A piously-inclined person was exhorting Pat on the subject of religion. He indignantly answered, "Sure, an' diden't I jine the Metho dist: raiv an' I jiued for six months, an' behaved myself so well they let me off with three." If a young lady would win the esteem of those whose esteem is worth the winning she will not sit in the parlor occupied with fancy work while her mother washes the dishes in the hitching. The London papers state that the warrant of Captain Erie, of the l)o:nl)y, has been returned to him, the authorities in England deem ing the ground for suspension iu sullieient, thus endorsing one of the most heartless and cold-fjlood-ed wholesale murders on record. A woman in Indiana married a man by the name of Wright, and the next day she eloped with a man named Head. Probably the correspondence between the seduc er and the woman was about as follows, in the language of the old saying : a. O "31 y dear Re sure you are Wright, and then go! A. Head.' A Mrs. Brown, of San Francisco, who does a little in the way of! spouting for woman's rights, says ; that if woman are allowed to vote, j ami a man ever tries at t lie polls to seduce her to vote against her will, site will shoot him on the spot. j Tally one for Rrown, although we don t know what spot she has reler eneo to. An exchange says that Britan nia will continue to "rule the waves" until the United States has a government which will compel her to wave the rule. " E. F. KU-SELL, Pea! 2.' tat c Attorney. C. T.
