Quiet. There has only been one fight
in town the past eek. Some persons
alarmed the people lastTuesday night by
the cry of tire, about 12 o'clock. If the
city waterman would keep his eyes on
these disturbers, our citizens might be
spared the trouble of getting oui, of bed
when there is no ciuse for alarm.

Judge Trimble,

of Portland, called on
At Wokk. The Democracy of Multno
mah County are doing their whole duty.
and are sanguine of the success of the en
tire ticket by a handsome majority. On
last Tuesday evening the Democratic Club
was addressed by Judge Wait. Hon. L.
Stout and Col. J. H. Kced, in able and
elling speeches.
The Republicans of Maryland are pre
paring lor a stirring campaign this sum
mer and fall, r.nd are confident of be:ng
able to redeem the state. A cloe can
vass of the State shows 45.000 black vot
ers and about 35.000 white Republican
votes. The Democrats cannot poll over
70.000, which will make the contest close.
Oreaoiuan.
The Ore'jonidn. fearing, we presume,
that this piece of information would not
be seen by its Mongrel brethren, publish
ed it in two places in the same issue. But,
what a spectacle this ileal presents. The
will and interests of 70,000 white voters
are to be overthrown by the votes of 45.
000 niggers and 35 000 Radicals, not as
much to be respected as the poor negro.
This show why the elective franchise was
conlerred on the negro to aid the Radi
cal thieves in maintaining their control of
the Government. They have made the
same boast in regard to Oregon that the
200 nigger votes would give; them a ma
jority iu this State. Free white men of
Oregon, will you act with a party that
glories in being able to defeat the will of
70,000 wLites with 45,000 nigger voters
and who hone to defeat the will of a ma
jority of the white
voters of Oregon bv
the aid of the niggers.? Are you prepared
to say that a " white-man's government is
played ont?;' The Radical thieves iu pow
er lenow that their time has come ; that
an outraged free white people will hurl
the unworthy scoundrels from power, and
their only hope now is by the votes of
the negro population of this once white
man's inheritance. Sons of freemen, show
by your votes on the first Monday of June
that you. on this free western slope yet
cherish the fabric of your fathers. That
this government was made for white men
and their posterity. They have freed the
nigger, and hope by their votes now to
enslave the poor whites who yet dare to
act and speak like free white Americans.
Gran:) Lodge. The Grand Lodge of

convened at Portland last Tuesday. There
is . very large attendance of Repre
sentatives, every lodge in the Jurisdiction
beincr renresented. An unusual amount

of business is before the body, and it prob-
aldv- adiourned late last evenintr. The
Brethren of Portland gave the Grand
Eepresenla'ives a supper on Wednesday
evening, which was highly appreciated by
them. The Portland members know how
to do a thing handsomely.
Let the popple rememoer that crazy
Johnson, who is running over tne country
in the emnlov of the Radicals, made a
speech in Salem the second diy after the
Democratic Convention adjourned, heartily
endorsing the platform and the nominees.
He was afterwards bought by the Radi
cals for one thousand dollars a huge
price for such talent.

In the Herald to-day will be found re-printed-the
infamous treaty with China,
known as the Rurltngame treaty. H con
tains as good an exhibition of the policy
of the Radicals iu regard to the leprous
heathen slaves of A-ia as can be made.
The Radicals are ia favor cf cheap labor,
and the labor of Chinese slaves is the
cheapest that can be procured in the
world. It is to be introduced info Amer
ica in order to stop the independence of
white laborers and reduce them to such a
condition of poverty as will make them
easy victims to capitalists who desire to
establish imperial institutions on the ruins
of the Republic. Now. while we -charge
airamst the Radicals that they are respon
sible for the piesence. in vast numbers, of
this servile race amongst the free people
of America, they ietort b) saying that the
lirst Chinese immigration took place while
the Democrats were m power, and that it
was tolerated and eircouraged by them
It is true that some Chinamen did come to
California and Oregon, while both those
countries were vet ruled by the Demo
cracy, but it is untrue that they were en
couragod to do so by the party in power.
On the contrary, in Oregon the Democratic
party caused to be put in the Constitution
of the State. Sec. 8. of article XV, which
reads aa follows :
Sec. S. No Chinaman not a resident of
the State at the time of tha adoption of
this Constitution snaa ever hold any real
estate or mining claim, or work any mm
ing claim therein.
The Legislative Assembly shall provide
by law in the most effectual manner for
carrying out the above provision.
In pursuance of the above command
of the Constitution, acls were passed by
the Legislature providing for special dis
criminating taxes to be levied on China
men, negroes mulattoes and Kanakas.
The object of all these laws was to discour-
ae Chinese immigration by compelling
them to bear heavv burthens in addition
to the burthens borne by white men. This
was the Democratic policy, and its effect
was to prevent main" Chinamen from com
in r to, and residing within, the State. All
has been changed, however, by the Radi
cals, who have placed the cheap-scorning,
rat eatin?. leprous heathen slaves of Asia
on a par with whito w orking men. and ex
tend to them every privilege enjoyed by
anv class of persons in the country. Un
der Radical rule, therefore, vast numbers
of Chinamen have come to Oregon, and
now reside in the State, to the detriment
of white laborers whose occupations they
usurp. In the face of these stubborn facts
we cannot see by what means such argu
ments can be supported as arc advanced
by the Radicals to show that the Demo
cratic party has ever been in a position of
encouraging Chinese immigration. Hav
ing repealed the laws that discriminated
againt them, and adopted the infamous
treaty referred o in the beginning of this
article, the Radicals, and no one else, are
responsible for the presence among us of
mo mnese tiaves. w no, as we have re-
peaiodiy stiown. are reducing the white
men and women of the Sta;e to a r-nmliti.m

which has to resort to such means lo keep
itself in power?
"We ask our readers to particularly read
the law published elsewhere creating
