From the Daily Herald. Petitions are in circulation in Multno mah county, praying the Legislature to pass a law consolidating the city govern ment of Portland with that of the county. A bell has been cast in Portland, at the Willamette Iron Works, for the Baptist Church in Eugene City. This is the'first bell cast in Oregon, and is said to be clear and tine toned. It weighs 230 pounds. A rumor reached us that the body of young Dodge, who was lost by the capsiz ing ot the schooner Champion, in Shoal water Bay. a few weeks since, had been recovered. Chas. One of the clubs organized by the Fif teenth Amendments in this city has died a natural death. Cause assigned that the opposition club underbid them and got all the money dUbuied by the Republi cans, at their late primaries. A large number of men, who have been lately employed on the Oregon Central Railroad, were discharged yesterday. We were not informed as to the cause of their dismissal. Rumor has it that politics is at the bottom. - From the Orcgonian. The question as to whether the town lots in a church yard which are not actu ally covered by the church, buildings, are liable to taxation, was argued before Judge Upton, in Chambers, in the case of the First Baptist Church of Portland vs. Al. Zeiber, Sheriff of Multnomah county. The law of this State says that houses of worship and the lots on which they stand, when used for religious purposes only', are exempt from taxation. The enclosure in which the Baptist Church stands com prises four town lots, on one of which the Church edifice stands the Assessor assess ed the other three as liable to be taxed. The case above was brought to restrain the Sheriff from collecting such tax. The case is a new one. the question having never been raised before in this State, and as most, if not all. the churches in this city owning lots which are used as church yards, desired a test case for all. this has excited considerable interest. After hear ing the arguments of the counsels, the Court ordered that the Sheriff be restrain ed until further orders as the final decree of the Court cannot be given until the regular term time. But the question may be regarded as finally settled. The residence of James Sir.Mi. at the Dalles, was destroyed by fire last week. Loss about $3,000. ALBANY. From the Albany Democrat. Lieut. Volney Smith, eldest son of the late Delazon Smith, has retired from the U. S. army and now occupies the office of County Clerk in Arkansas. He expects to visit Oregon next month. We learn from Mr. Jas. II. Doutbit. one of the Commissioners to locate Agricul tural College lands, that the lands have all been located 00.000 acres. We are positively informed that Mr. Jacob Smith, who was some weeks ago murdered by Indians in Arizona Territory, was a brother of Wm. M.Simth, of Santiam precinct, in this county. We regret to learn that Dr. Hill's health is still precarious. Mm. iMiwiu UeacU is also dangerously ill. There are several cases of measles in town. Other communities can be supplied on liberal terms, v-ith great inducements to clubs. From die Register. John Davis was adjudged insane by the County Judge, on Thursday, and was tak en to Portland by the Sheriff on Friday. Davis was a mason by trade, but had been engaged in farming near this city lately. Mrs. Lisle had the misfortune, one day last week, to fall and break two rib's on the right side. The Salem Statesman says that the Sis ter's School in that place has a very full attendance ; 20 boarders, with 100 day scholars. There will be a class of nine to graduate this year, the most of whom re side in Salem. This speaks well for Salem. ROSEBURG. From the Ensign. "We are informed that a new Republican county convention was called for the 3d inst., in Coos county. This step was caused by the withdrawal of the candi dates nominated by the former conven tion. Things don't seem to move very smooth with the Radicals in Coos county." A man named Paquet was recently held to answer on a charge ot an assault with a dangerous weapon on Wm. Painter, in Coos comity. The lands within 20 miles of the Ore gon a.id California railroad as far south as Roseburg, have been withdrawn from market, and all odd sections within 30 miles are reserved as iudemaity lauds to the railroad company. Work on the Coos Bay Wagon Road was commenced at a point ten miles from from Roseburg last week. The court house at Dallas was filled to overflowing on Monday, to listen to the remarks of Hon. Ren Havden, who delivered one of most t,ioqi;.nt in behalf of the cause of Democracy. Mr. Hayden denied that he or hh nartv were in favor of. or pledged to. repudia t.on. as all the lying Radical newspapers of the State will persist in bowline ih it he held Ihe same views as Pendleton oor.iees and other leading Democrats of the Union : th-it he was in favor of an equitable adjustment and for pavin the bondholders all that was due them, if any thing, on such a basis. He lashed the Radical leaders and their hired nres with a whip as only Ren can handle, and if any oi inoe present imagine he was to b laid cn the shelf in June, they were pretty well convinced to the contrary at the adjournment. Mr. Hayden wound up with a beautifully touching allusion to his early settlement in the county ; the factor his children being buried there ; of his own expectation of being laid by their sides; his attachment to the peop'le and interests of his connty. which brought tears to many aa eye not used to the " melting mo-id." We cannot do justice to such a speech- as. it must have been heard to be appreciated ; but we do know that it did good service and that Polk county i safe for Ben and the rest of the ticket all, Radical lies to the contrary not withstanding.
