A shooting affray took place yesterday
morning about half past ten at St. Helens,
in which one of the parties was seriously.
it not uangevonrly. wounded. I" rom ail!
the facts we can gather, it appears that S. '
A. Mi lea and J. W. Caftpbell met at the
hour iadieatf l above, on the beach in
front of Wi'.Hams' store, and had some
high words in rehiou to somL money mat
ters. They became excited, and the lie
was given. Campbell rem irked to Miles
not lay his hands on him. Mites placed
his hands on Chapbell, rem viking at the
s im3 time that he was not afraid of him.
ChifSbell then drew a revolver and fired,
hitting Miles in the stomachy Messengers
were dispatched to this city for medical
assistance. When last herd from the
wounded man was in a very low condition.
Deoutv Sherriff Williams, of Columbia

The Willamette Valley Mercury of April

county is now in session Judge Kelsay,
presiding. Not much of a docket. Several
small jury cases, will b.-sido seven di
vorce cases, will probably prolong the
ssion to late in the week.
A xkw Invention. The Allany Register
of the Iti. says Mr. James Finlason. of this
county, has invented a seed sower, the.
model of which we have inspected, which
will doubtless soon suprecede all others
now in the market, as the cost will be no
more.and it will prove far superior in many
respect to any we have yet seen. It can
be used as a brid-cast sower or as a drill,
olides are so adjusted In a revolving cylin
der that the amount, of grain sown per
acre can be increased or lessened at will
of the driver. It seems to be a complete
machine, and we congratulate Mr. Finlyson
on having invented a machine that is so
near periect that it would seem impossible
to make any father improvement oa it.
The Roseburg Ensign of the 1G, Fays
We are informed that the Coos Bay Wa
gon Road Company propose to commence
work on their road on the 25th instant.
The Directors have arrived at the conclu
sion Hiat work can be prosecuted cheaper
and better by their agent than by contrac
tors, and Mr. Win. Weekly has been ap
pointed to superintend the work. It is
the purpose of the company to complete
twenty miles on this end of the road be
fore the session of the next Legislature.
This will enable them'to make an estimate
of the probable cost of completing the
road, and also to realize something from
the sale of the lands that have been gran
ted to aid in its construction.

Clarke, of the Statesman, pretends to
see repudiation in the Democratic plat
form, and becomes very indignant and
rampant at the Democracy for the imagin
ary outrage. To show his insincerity, we
copy from the Democratic Press a letter
from him to S. E. May. The letter is as
folio V3 :
Aunuttx. Aug, C, 18GG,
S. EMty. Esq.. Secretary of State :
DiiAt: Sin : Your note kindly calling
my attention to the sum due by me to the
School Fund (the trifling amount being
some $!J0v) only.) has been this day re
ceived, and I hasten to reply to express
my regrets that the School Fund so im
portant a branch of the State r-'inannces
has in the past been so incfiicieently man
aged, as no doubt, much of it. besides the
sum you allude to. is at present inconver
table, and not to be applied to its very
importent uses. No doubt to the finan
cial mismanagement of the late Treasurer,
whome Providence even to the last, con
ferred as a Boon (and I beg to insinuate
a questionable ene) to the ancient Demo
cracy of the State. To be brief. I borrow
ed this money upon a piece, of real estate,
sold the same subject to the mortgage,
and informed the said Treasurer of the
sale, and there was a probibiiity that the
sum cou Id tea, ye been realized, only that
the matter was neglected, the interest nev
er collected, and myself Snaly prosecuted
and the property sold years afterward
when it had become mined and worthless.
Under these circumstances it does not
worry me to be unable io pay the dept ;
neither does it annoy me to be kindly re
minded of it. Of course, I do not dispute
the indebtedness, because 1 am not given
to lying.
Please " make s note of it," that fhe
debt is not a good one, and I never expect
to be able to pay it in full. Should it be
possible to effect a compromise for some
srivi'l sum. 1 might compass if. and the
matter should receive speedy attention as
my health is, and has been, feeLle since
the spring.
If this fund is at present under your
management, let me urge yon to be care
ful in engineering it, as we both have chil
dren growing up to claim its benefits, and
I am anxious that mine should have every
advantage the State can confer upon them
What I particularly desire to convey, is.
that I am not to blame that this owing,
and having no means at command, and
owing sums that I feel much more bound
to pay than this, the School Fund will
probably suffer a total loss, unless in the
future some unexpected fate shall relize
in my person a second edition of "Micaw
ber"' in his closing years.
Rj'greting that I cannot remit you the
full amount and a bonus besides, lor the
uses ofthe fund.
I remain your obedient servent,
S. A. CLARKE
Samuel, do not talk any more about
Democratic repudiation it will be in bad
taste for you to do so.
Mr. Ckanstox's Letter. We invite
particular attention to the letter of Mr. E.
Cranston, which appears on the first page
of to-day's paper. Mr. Cranston has been
a firm Republican, but he is a Republican
no more, and the reasons lie gives for
leaving that corrupt and mongrel party
are unanswerable. Th letter will richly
repay a perusal.

ily with the best of success. I was sick for
some months, and used every remedy. I
called several physicians, but tliev did me no
trood. I exhausted every remedy known to
the medical profession, and received no ben
efit. This Lung and Liver B dam cured me,
and I do not hedtate to recommend it to the
public and my friends, as a good and safe
rem dy. Those who know me, as many do
in this Stats, know that I would not recom
mend them to use a thing that l:as no merit,
because I am opposed to quack remedies.
