Gas Light ix Oregon Citt. About the
first of last month. Mr. J. J. Miller came
here with a newgas generating apparatus.
Messrs. C. W. Pope & Co. purchased the
right for this county, and now have in op
eration in their hardware store this new
gas generator, which supplies gas for five
burners. All that is necessary to con
vince any one that this new apparatus is
a cheap means of procuring gas light, is
to step iuto the store of Messrs. Pope &
Co. after dark see the light produced by
live burners, at about the same eost that
it would take for five coal oil lamps. All
public buildings in this city should be
lighted wit!) it. and families will find it a
very desirable convenience in their homes.
Sidden Death. On last Thursday at
about lDj o'clock, Mr. R. Rosenstein, of
Albany went into the Cliff House, in this
place, said he was feeling unwell and
wanted a bed. A bed was furnished and
proper attentions given him. In a short
time after going to his room, he was taken
with spasms, and Dr. Saffarrans was called
in, but medical aid availed nothing. With
in three-quarters of an hour alter he lay
down, he was a corpse. Mr. Rosenstein
was. apparently, a stmt, healthy man, and
on that morning he was on the streets and
appeared to be enjoying his usual good
health. Life is surely a brittle thread.
Buu;hky. On last Wednesday night,
some person or persons entered the Fash
ion Saloon, in this place, and took the
loose change in the drawer, a derringer,
a bottle of claret and some whisky. Mr.
Chipman. the proprietor, says that the en
try was made by raising the window, and
must haw been done between 1 1 J and 5
o'clock. There was no great loss sustain
ed, but the act shows thr.t there are light
fingered gentry around, and that it will
be well to prepare for them.
Bereavement. 1 he many friends ol
Rev. I. D. Driver will be pained to hear
of the death of his wife. She died at Port
last Wednesday evening.
The social party at the Court House
last Tuesday evening, was a very pleasant
affair. There was a good attendance and
all enjoyed themselves.
The P. T. Company will dispatch a boat

day) morning.
Neav Pai'ek. We invite the attention
of our readers to the prospectus of the
Bedrock Democrat, published in another
column of to-daj's paper. We are suffici
ently acquainted with Mr. Abbott and
Judge McArthur to know that the Demo
crat will be a live paper, and tbat they
will do all they propose doing. The
Democracy will do well to give it a hearty
support.
Plaixdealeu. We have seen the first
issue of a paper with the above name,
published at Roseburg, by Mr. W. Thomp
son. Its typographical appearance is very
neat, and ably edited. We wish Mr. T.
most abundant success and hope that he
will make it warm for his Radical neigh
bor. Daily and Weekly Press, An associ
ation has been iormed at Salem, with W.
II. Watkinds as business manager, who
propose to commence the publication of
a daily and weekly paper, at that place.
The first issue will appear on the 15th
inst. and be furnished to subscribers for
50 cents until after the election.

NATURE'S OWN REMEDY.
-2JGC-
On qftht Celebrated Physicians of Portland,
says lie is cured of the Lung and Liver ctm
plaint, and that Ue oicas his life to Dr. Mur
ray's Lung and Liver Balsam. Read ichat
he says : Portland. Mav 21, 1S9.
I have tried Dr. J. W. Murray's
Lung and Liver Balsam. I used it in my fam
Uy with the best of success. I was sick for
some months, and used every remedy. I
called several phj-sioians, but thev did me no
pood. I exhausted every remedy known to
the medical profession, and received no ben
efit. This Lung and Liver Balsam cured me,
and I do not hesitate to recommend it to the
public and my friends, as a good and safe
rem dy. Those who know me, as many do
in this Stati, know that I would not recom
mend them to use a thing that has no merit,
because I am opposed to quack remedies.
