o JERUSALEM. extract from a letter of a correspondent of the London Stan dard, the following interesting remarks: " For four hours our road lay across the plain. We entered a valley at the foot of the ranre of mountains. In these mountains one fully realizes the description one has read of the barrenness of the Holy Land. Anything more utterly bare and dreary could hardly be imagined. In most places the ridges of limestone lay white and glistening in the morn innr sun. Not a handful of soil was to be seen, not a blade of veg 0 etation raised its head. All was blank steii'lty ,and desolation. Occasionally, however, we came upon hillsides where the ilex and the -wild olive were scattered. Nothing is more difficult than to picture Ihese scenes as they were in Scripture times ; when a t2em-v-ing population inhabited them, 9vhen these barren hills were cov ered to the summits with vine , yards and oliveyards and olive grounds, when Palestine was a land flowing with milk and honey, and abounding in, corn and oil and wine. r:. "And, yet, impossible as it ap- np.irs at first sierht. such a state of: tbinrra i an'lt.O nomiKltible CVOll bi'tn cry 1 - - with the apparant stertility of these hills. Industry can clothe the most barren hills with verdure. Upon the slopes of the Jura we can nowadays see hills of precisely similar formation covered with yjneyards. Each of these lime stone ridjres which run alonir the fsidc of the mountain was once a terrace covered witb vines. With soil brought from a distance, and kept in its place by artificial walls of stone, these hills might be, and "no doubt were, covered with vines and olives to their very summits. With such general vegetation the climate would have been very dif ferent to what it is at present. Rain may have fallen frequently, and the heat would have been far less excessive. After the almost absolute de struction of the Jewish nation at the time of the fall of Jerusalem, and still more on the occasion of 1 the crushing of the insurrection two hundred years afterward, the cnangc would have begun to take place. Left to themselves the walls which, retained the terraces "would have crumbled and fallen, ! and in time the stones and earth : would have been washed by the " heavy winter rains into the valleys below. So, gradually, the bare rock of the hills would have been exposed as we now see it. "That these hills are perfectly capable of cultivation was evident enough from the luxuriance of olives and vines near the one or two villages we passed, whereaa real .attempt at cultivation was made. The road is here a very fair one, and far better adapted for carriages than it is when cross ing the sandy plain. Some of the accents and descents are steep, but -her zig-zags have been cut. We passed several parties of thirty or forty men at work at these points. This labor is now paid for. ' The completion of the road is a very great boon to traveleis. "Unincumbered by any bag gage and fairly mounted, one may go the distance from Jaffa to Jerusalem in from five to six hours, or less than halt the time it for merly occupied. The only village of any size between Kamelah and Jerusalem, is Kirieth Jerim, where the ark remained for some years, uritil taken by David t Jerusa lem. It is now called by an Arab name, and has no feature of inter est except the ruins of an old con vent. It was, until within the last twegty years, a noted place for brigands, who levied black mail upon all passing travelers. The road is now as safe as that be tween London and Dover. glhad heard much of the first view of Jerusalem, and as we neared the las crest between us and the city we hurried on in eager expectation. The result was a disappointment to all of us. .between us and Jerusalem, cut ting off the greater portion of Cthe view, stands the Russian cstab - lishment, which may be described as apparently consisting of two rows of Brighton lodging-houses with a portion of thopavillion. It maybe, and no doubt is, an ad mirable establishment, but it was an act of unpardonable vandalism to overburden Jerusalem with this bran new piece of ugliness. The Marquis of 'Bute, has, I am told, purchased the piece of ground ad joining for the erection of a Roman 0 Catholic" establishment. Scarcely any portion of Jerusalem will be visible from the Jaffa road when this shall have been completed. The travelers who wishes to get the grand impression which the first view of Jerusalem cannot but give, should endeavor to make a detour, even at a considerable loss of time, and to come up from be hind Olive or cnef the hills upon the east of the city. For Jerusa lem, evenJn its decadence, is one of the most striking cities in the world, its masvivo walls lmv e a O most imposing aspect as seen from the distance. Its situation upon its two"hills, or rather for the val W botvvpen them is filled up and obliterated upon its one hill, ris ing abruptly from the valley, is superb; and it is easy to under stand that, before the invention of gunpowder, it was considered to be impregnable. It is a theme which would require a volume to do it justice. " Since the crusades, the Em peror of Austria is the first crown ed head who has visited Jerusalem. Such an event should be signaliz ed in some special way. When the Priuce of Wales visited the Holy Land he was permitted to enter the Holy Shrine at Hebron, and to look down the slit in the Cave of Machpelah, being the first Christian who for centuries had been permitted to do so. The only further honors which could be permitted to the Emperor of Austria would be to enter the cave itself. Woman in Adverc ity. Where is the man that cannot confirm the truth of the following sensible remarks: Woman should be more trusted and confided in as wives, mothers and sisters. They have a quick perception of right aild wionr, and, without always knowing why, read the present and the future, read characters and acts, designs and probabilities, where man sees no letter or sign What else do we mean by "moth er wit, save that a woman has a quicker perception and readier in vention than man ? How otten, when man abandons the helm in despair, woman seizes it, and car ries the home ship through the storm ! Man often flies from home and family to avoid impending ru in. Woman seldom, if ever, for sook home thus. Woman never evaded mere temporal calamity by suicide or desertion. The proud banker, rather than live to see his poverty gazetted, may blow out his brains, and leave his wife and children to Want, protectorless. Loving woman would have coun seled him to accept poverty, and live to cherish his family and re lieve his fortune. Woman should be counseled and confided in. It is the beauty and glory of her na ture, that it instinctively grasps at and clings to the truth and right. Reason, man's greatest faculty, takes time to hesitate before it de cides; but woman's instinct never hesitates in its decision, and is scarcely ever wrong where it has even chances with reason. Woman feels where man thinks, acts where he deliberates, hopes where he dis appears, and triumphs where he fails. Educational Gazette. The Lord's Prayer. Did you ever think, short as it is, how much there is in it? Oh it is beautiful? And, like a dia mond in the crown of a queen, it unites a thousand sparkling gems in one. - It teaches all of us -every one oi us, to look to boa as our pa rent: "Our Father." It teaches us to raise our thoughts and desires above the earth: Who art in Heaven." It tells us that we must rever ence our Heavenly Father: "Hal lowed be thy name." It breathes the saints reward : "Thy kingdom come." And a submissive, obedient spir it: "Thy will be done on earth as it is done in heaven." And a dependent, trusting spir it: "Give us this day our daily bread." And forgiving spirit: "For give us our tresspasses as we for give those who tresspass against us." And a cautious spirit "Deliver us from evil." And' last of all, an adorning spirit "For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen." Why Printers ark Dissiptkd. A certain typo, whose nose shown in the dark like a lighthouse the effect of steady and copious libations of stimulants having been asked why printers were dis sipated, astonished the questioner by the following neat answer: When others shunned the murky sky, Where flash on flash were biight'nin-. Great Franklin went to fly his kite, And bottled up the lightatng. And since his time, when cares oppress. And hard limes are tightning. The Printer seeks to drown his woes 10 draughts of '-bottled lightning." When badly tattered his warm heart A place for grief to rankle in He takes his lightning.- ilies bh kite. And thinks himself a Franklin. To a toast of "Tfml bless them," a railway conductor responded: May their route through hfe be pleasant and profita ble, their ties well laid, their track straightforward, and not back wards. Jlay their fathers h. conductors, their mothers faithful tenders, and their switeh never misplaced.' Good thoughts are companions often our best. ' A Kentucky paper thinks that the word croquet is too Frcnchy, and proposes that the game which it designates be hereafter called Presbyterian billiards." . m ' A celebrated wit was asked if he knew Theodore Hook ( i es," replied he, " Hook and eye are old associates. It is said that a dog taken in its infancy and held three-quarters of an hour under water, will never be troubled with hydrophobia. It is stated that the Hon- Horace Greeley is not only a pillar of the Rev. Mr. Chapin's Church, but one of its soundest sleepers. And now comes Jenkins, who asserts Anna ' Dickinson wears " palpitators." How does he know. If you would not have affliction to visit you twice, listen at once to what it teaches.
