east, by the liquor dealers, that if they

ply, there will be a chance of saving some
ol those who are liable to fall into error.

Congregational Sabbath School, which,
we understand, netted about forty dollars.

situated near the head

miles from this place. The timber is of

kind of management, as it is said that
larch makes the best finishing lumber we
have on this coast.

days, some of the farmers in this ai;d the

their spring wheat. We hope they will
sow early, and plenty of it. Every farmer
should make it a point to put iu a few
acres, at left ; it will saye them money

It is confidently expected that more im
provements in the shape of building houses
and barns will be done the coming season

old rickety shanties.

seeking a location for a country store, let
them come and look at this place. There
is no better place in the State for a coun
try store thatO this. We have a good
church, and can have one of the best of
schools.
We have plenty of water power to run
the various kinds of machinery. We have
a good saw mill, and it won't be long be
fore we have a grist mill, as I am informed
by the gentleman who? owns the mill privi
lege here. We certainly need a good
grist mill in this vicinity, and the man that
puts one up. and does the fair thing, will
be entitled to the gratitude of the people.

Our three months winter school closes

A Sew Gaa Generator.
During this week Mr. J. J. Miller has had
on exhibition in the Odd Fellows' build
ing, in this place, a new machine for the
generation of lighting gas. We sa-tf- it,
and were much pleaded with it, and we
think our business houses would do well
to secure the right to use it. The Ort
rjonian of the 23d of February contains
the following remarks in regard to this
new gas generator, which W3 believe to
be correct :
It is claimed for !t that it is absolutely
safe from explosion md that it will furnish
gas at the rate of not over 92 per thou
sand feet. The cost of the machine is
about $100 fof eight burners. We have
seen it in operation, and without attempt
ing to describe the process of gas genera
tion, we have no hesitation in saying that
it seems to have all the advantages which
the proprietor claims for it. The lights
are as steady as ordinary gas lights lind
fully as brilliant. The burners can be
used with or without chimneys, though
with chimneys the light is steadier and
more powerful. The machine is so ar
ranged that gas is generated in quantity
to suit the consumption. There isho per
ceptible difference in the blaze, w hether
one or all the burners' are In Use. If all
are lighted, the machine : imply runs faster
and generates gas more rapidly. For ho
tels or other public buildings, or even
dwellings where several limb's are wanted,
it can be used at a cost not greater than

use of kerosene, and very much cheaper
than it is possible to make coal gas. After
the machine is purchased and the neces
sary gas fitting supplied, the only cost o

air and water. Mr. Miller will take or
ders to furnish machines, or will sell
county rights ia Oregon or Washington
Territory.
