lead with a poem of fifteen pages, which
is simultaneously punished as a holiday

a discussion of the woman question, un

Letter from Clear Creels.
Cleah Ckkek, Clackamas Co.. )
Oregon, Jan. lOih. 1870. f
EJUor Weekly Enterprise : This cold,
frosty weather . that we arc having now
causes some uneasiness lest our wheat crop
will be cut materially short. The hard
freezing we have of nights, and the thaw
ing out in the day time, causes the ground
to utts-tt1i, which kills out the wheat
Almost every one prefers a little, ralu to
these frosty nights. Although but little
grain is sown in this part of the county,
comparatively speaking, it isuiot on ac
count of freezing weather, or the unpro
ductiveness of the soil, but from genuine
lazmeps. I know- ofplenty of men living
in this'evicinity who have as good farms as
any ut the State, who Lave to work out by
days" ivork to get their bread. If farming
was conducted on these principles in the
Allan ic States, a man would starve to
death.. Only think of a. farmer living in
the State of Oregon, w here everything
that man wants to grow, grows witlRess
than cne-half the work a farmer has to do
in some other States, working out for the
support of Lis family. I blush record
it, but it is nevertheless true, and that.too.
of men who own from 160 to G10 acres of
land land that is productive in every
nse of the word land that'wi'l produce
its twenty, thirty, or fifty bushels ot the
ETiest quality ofwheat to the acre, and its
forty, sixty, and eighty bushels of good j
heavy oats. 05y think of a farmer working
out, here, when he can raise such crops as
taat, and all' the good fruit he wants,
besides. O
The Good Templars have organized a
Lodge here, called "Mount Pleasant.

degrees, and some twelveQsorc have made
application to become members. Qjreat
credit is due Rev. G. W. Roork and L. T.
Darin, Esq.. for their untiring energy and
perseverance in bringing about this glori
ous result. Among the members of
Mount Pleasant Lodge are many of 'our
best citizens, but there are a great many
yet out in the cold whose feet may some
day patter o'er the ashes of h 1 if they
don't forsake their sin3 and sign the glori
ous, temperance pledge.
There is no unusual excitement going
on here, but an old bachelor living on the
Creek here a few days ago went and got
married. We think that other old bache
lors could go and do likewise with profit
to themselves and others. These old
bachelors must don the matrimonial garb
and be somebody.

Jdr. Broughton is an honest gentleman,
and so insteadQof of availing himself of
the opportunityof speculating in counter
feit greenbacks, he handed the letter over
to us thai it might be exposed. Mr. John
3Iq Bacon, postmaster ai1 Sis place, in
forms us that1 he received a similar com
munication, but from different parties.
We have seat Mr. Broughtoirs letter to
the Chief of Police of New York City, and
will also mail a copy of this paper to the
same officer. O
For counterfeiters to boldly advertise
their spurious money in this way, is cer
tainly indicative of a very loo-e state of
morals in . the United States. Can such
things be so openly iImc, and the opera
tors escape deteclipii. if the officers of the
law do their duty 7 We think not. But
tlie loose and partial manner In which the
laws have been administered during the
past four or five years, has certainly had
an active agency in deve!opingcan5:' em

A Household Elixir Adapted to all
Climates It would be a happy thing' fur
the world ilallthe excitants at present used

In California, it seem3 possible tha this de

and that tlie1 confidence of the peoplQn its

with every passing year. " Figures that
