TOWN AXD COUNTY.
"Tbe Vestry of St. FanVs (Episcopal)
Church, in tbis city, have ordered the pur
chase of an Oswego Stove for the church.
There are no more economical or comfort
able stoves in use, for office, church,
echool-room, etc.. than the Oswego Stove ;
an-i, besides this, they are cast from the
metal of our own county.
Pr.owsKD. A young man named Foote,
pinploved as steward on the steamer Alert,
jumped overboard and was drowned on
last Saturday morning. He went into the
ladies' cabin, and as he went out, spoke to
come ladies, and bid them good bye, then
immediately went aft and jumped over
board. He had recently been discharged
from ibe Insane Asylum, at East Portland.

Frr.K. On Thursday morning, about
five o'clock an old frame house on the
west side of the river, and on the Harvey
property was burued down. The house
was occupied at tffe time but the occu
pants were absent and what little proper

IJaii.kovo Acciukxt. On last Thursday
evening one of the trucks, or wheels, of a
construction car gave way as (Iw train
was approaching the Clackamas and
threw tno of the construction cars off the
track smashing one of tiiemso much that
it cannot be used again. Two men were
lonsiderably bruised, but not seriously
injured by the accident.
Uin.noAi Puoi;nK.ss. The track layers
tave0ieaehed this place, and the track cf
the Oregon Central Railroad is now laid
from Portland to Oregon City, with the
exception of the Clackamas bridge, which
we are informed will be finished and the
nils laid across it within ten days from
this time.
I. R. Makl. Whose left arm was am
putated close to the shoulder on the 14th
of last month is in town and called upon
us oa last Wednesday. The wound is
healing very rapidly and in a very short
time he will be able to attend to his busi
ness. We regard this as ve y quick work.
Mr. Mael desires us to say for him that
he hig jly appreciates the f riendly spirit of
the citizens of this place who :?o promptly
manifested material sympathy for him on
the occasion of his misfortune ; and ac
cepts the donation with many thanks to
the donors.
Extertaixmext. On last Saturday eve
ning, Prof. Plummer gave one of his re
fined and popular drawing-room enter
tainments at the Court House, which was
attended by a small, but appreciative au
dience, who testified their approbation by
frequent bursts of applause. The ap
plause was well-merited too, for he is an
accomplished reader, and an exquisite
Actor and furnished his audience a rich
intellectual treat.
Mr. Plummer will give another reading
t the Court House on next Monday eve
ning, on which occasion he will preach
tb celebrate Hard Shell Baptist Sermon
-Harp of 1,000 Strings, which, properly
rendered, will be quite laughable. Not
withstanding the frightful announcement
on his bills that an athletic individual at
the door will insi st mildly, yet firmly, on
voluntary contribution of an American
i dollar from each person who attempts
to rush in, let him have a full house.
False Alarm. -On Saturday evening
last, soon after dark, the savage cry of
"Fire!' Firel?"' startled our citizens,
and as the alarm proceeded from the vi
cinity of the Imperial Flouring Mills, and
'M given so vociferously as to be heard
above ihe noise of the rushing waters, in
that vicinity, the natural supposition was
that it was a case of urgent necessity, and
the firemen of the several Companies has
tened after their -respective machines,' all
of which were speedily put upon the route
to the scene of the (supposed) conflagra
tion, which was just below the sidewalk.
here it ascends from Main street to the
tosin of the P. T. Co. Theie, what a sight
met the astonished gaze of ihe public I
An old man, heels up and coat tail flvinr
ith a basket of0pig3 feet, scattered about
him, sat there halloing, sobbing and bel
lowing J ne ilaJ been Uown town' and
while there had imbibed rather too freely,
which caused him to lose his equilibrium
at that particular juncture, when the man,
the lager that was in him, the basket, pif
feet and all, topped over' the basin, on
the weather side. He was rescued, and
ectoa his way, regretful at the loss of
contents of his basket, but apparently
indifferent about the trouble and damans
SCi, " lnnir. or re good citizens
aa sustained at his expense,
Patience Exiiaisted. The turn out'7
of the Fire Department on last Saturday
evening caused a heavy draft on the stock
of good nature possessed by the boys."
It was truly a trial by no means compos
ing to the nerves of the department, nor
complimentary to the by-standers. and we
trust that in future people generally may
be found lending a helping hand to the
beys of the department, instead of derisive
ly looking on. The occasion, it is true, as
it has turned, presents many ludicrous in
cidentsbut, hid it have been Mr. La
Roque's mill on fire, instead of a man in
the " ditch Thirty Thousand Dollars'
worth of property destroyed, instead of a
basket of pigs' feet; then, the "laugh'
would not be so broad. The fire depart
ment needs to be encouraged. and "though
we confess to having enjoyed the pigs' feet
incident hugely, we agree with the fire
men that it was an ugly joke for them,
and contrary to what Artemns Ward once
said, of a similar circumstance, it was not
"sing'lcr, these firemen haven't leas' pre-
ciasion of humor,' their patience was all
gone and Plummer couldn't 'ave made
'em laugh that night, with one of his lec
tures. Wanted. We observe that a few of the.
Main street merchants, in this city, have
employed small boys, (or the boys have
volunteered), to keep the city cows from
customers' wagons, while trading. This
is a capital idea but would it not be bet
ter f or the next generation if parents were
to see that the boys were in school, or
otherwise employed ? We suggest that
a few more dogs be imported, and kept in
the place for such emergen 3Hig. By a
careful estimate it has been ascertained
that there are something less than y5.GoO
dogs now living in and about Oregon City
three or four thousand more would be
a number quite sufficient to do the work.
Mr. Joseph Crowther. who was form-erl-
employed as head finisher, in the Or
egon City Woolen Mills, a very worthy
and intelligent young man, was killed in
a gasolene explosion at Sherbrook, Prov
ince of Ontario, recently. A paper which
contains particulars of the explosion, in
forms us that Mr. Crowther was employed
in the finishing room of the establishment
where he met his death. One other person
met a similar fate, and a third was badly
injured. Mr. Crc wthers numerous friends
here, will be pained to hear of this melan
choly event.

Bai.lou's Monthly Magazixk. We are
in receipt of this marvellously cheap and
handsome Magaziue for December. Its
table of contents is varied and charming,
embracing the usual fine variety of serials,
sketches, stories, poems and attractive en
gravings. The publishers announce in
the prospectus for the coming year. a seri
al story Jbr adults, by the popular Maga
zine writer, James Franklin Fitts, and a
juvenile serial by the young people's fa
vorite. Horatio Alger, Jr. The price of
this periodical is a marvel to everybody
a hundred page fiast-class illustrate 1
Magazine for fifteen cents, or $1 fG per
year, is indeed wonderfully cheap. Elliott,

II.vnrEii for December. We have re

Magazine and find it replete with interest
ing and instructive reading matter. The
leading articles Frederick The Great and
Beast, Bird and Fish, both beautifully il
lustrated are worth nibre than the price of
the magazine for one year.
