house till he was fifty years of age. His
father left him 200 acres of choice land,
which hewotked as well as he knew how,
and made a comfortable living. One

but by some dodge of the law the villain

Excavations and explorations of Fngan
Home the burled city which lies beneath
Christian Come have for some time been
carried on under the personal direction of
the Pope. The results cf these explora
tions have been of the highest interest.
The predecessor of the present Pope
Gregory XVI did no little in the same
direction. During the time of Gregory,
the Monumental facade of the Claudian
Aqueduct was cleared away from the rude
works thrown up against it in some an
cient siege, and its magnificent propor
tions were fulPy disclosed. In the prog
ress of this work a Roman tomb was dis
covered beneath the rubbish, erected to
the memory of a worthy and wealthy ba
ker, Yirgilius Euryaces, and his wife.
The tomb was decorated with portrait
statues and relievo illustrating the busi
ness which led the deceased to" fortune
and to honor. A similar'work is now in
progress at theMarcian Aqueduct, and the
whole of its monumental facade is to be
cleared away from the fortifications and
superstructures of the middle ages, and
the Marcian waters are to flow, as of old,
to refresh the inhabitants of the Eternal
City.
The most valuable of all the discove
ries made, however, is that at the ancient
wharf of the Emporium, where, buried
beneath the accumulated rubbish of more
than a thousand years, is an inexhaustible
stock of blocks of polished marble of the
most costly and rare qualities. The blocks
already taken out. some of which are of
exceeding beauty, arc valued at over
$400,003 ; and as the depot of these treas
ures is said to extend down to the left
bank of the Tiger, from the Avon tine to
the Church of St. Paul beyond the walls,
it is probable that his Holiness has there
a store of almost bot-.ndless wealth. A
mong the masses got recently vcre a great
block of rose-colored Oriental alabaster
another of povonazetto, several of giallo'
antico, and fifteen pieces of African mar
ble, of which only two had been known
in Rome. Thirteen pieces of the precious
rayrrahae, which the ancient Romans pri
zed abode all other stones, have also been

A BES GEL TIGER. AT LARGE.
French "Mountain, between
Glen's Falls, Xew York, and Lake
George, was the scene of a genuine
sensation during the sojourn of
Campbell's circus and managerie
at that village last week. At a
late hour one night, long after the
audience had been dismissed and
the canvas pulled down, the watch
man left in charge observed a large
animal dart across his path and al
most instantly vanish in the dark
ness. Suspecting at a once that
some one or more of the wild
beasts had escaped from then
bondage, he hastened to where the
cages were corralled, and discover
ed that the largest of the two ele
phants had drawn the stake to
which lie had been fastened and
had upset the cage of the Bengal
tiger, breaking the doors and bend
ing the bars m sucli a manner as
to allow the animal to escape. To
run to the hotel, awaken the cle
ihant driver, and summon all
hands was the work of a moment.
The elephant was promptly fetter
ed, and diligent search for the
truant titrer commenced. The
scene was one of indescribable ex
citcment. None but two of the
most resolute of the showmen
would lead in the search, the re
mainder followed gt a respectful
distance, and in the greatest trepi
dation. The tiger was not long in
making known his whereabouts,
for the bleating of a calf in pain
and terror indicated tha his royal
highness was satiating his glutton
ous appetite on live veal. The
leading spirits of the hunt' ap
proached, and by the aid of their
torches, discovered that the tiger
had stricken down a yearling heif
er, and was crouched over the dy
ing., animal, greedily lapping the
blood which spurted from a largj
wound in its neck. A plan for
capture was soon devised, and Mr.
Clem. King, the keeper of the tiger,
at once set about putting it into
practice, lie procured a rope, and
making a noose in the form of a
lariat, he ascended by a ladder
from the outside of the shed to a
window, from whence he passed
to the rafters immediatoly over the
tiger, lie then gave a loud shout,
which caused the tiger to look up
ward, giving him an opportunity
to throw a lariat over; the ani
mal's head, which feat he dexter
ously accomplished. Drawing his
rone taut, he made it fast to a
beam, and another rope was passed
to him, with which he succeeded
in lassooing the tiger in the same
manner as before. Mr. Kincr then
threw the end oi one rope to a
party of men-near the entrance to
the' shed, and when they had se
cured it he threw the end of the
other rope to .another party, and
the two Hues were at once stretch
ed, each party walking in an oppo
site direction. When the tiger
would make a rush at one group
of his captors, the others would
haul taut on their line, and thus
prevent him fronts doing any mis
chief. After mftch exertion and
several ludicrous stampedes from
the bystanders, he was dragged
back to his cage, which had in the
meantime been repaired. AYhcn
he came in view of his den he
bounded in of his own accord, but
the attendants, in their haste to se
cure him, closed the iron door sud
denly and severed about a foot of

has sold oil" a threat deal of land
recently to his children, and lie has
given away a large number of farms
to those who are not too lazy to
work them. Uncle Sam will give
anybody one hundred and sixty a
cres of lirst-class land who will be
steady and cultivate it for the next
live years. He has between four
and live millions of acres in Mich
igan, which anvbody can have for
asking and living on it awhile.
The number of acres of land undis
posed of on June 30, 18G8, amoun
ted to 1,405,360,077, including A
laska. This area, it is calculated,
is eighteen times the dimensions of
Great Britain and Ireland. The
undisposed of land is distributed
