-T When the National Life Iusuranca
Company of the United States of America,
commenced operations about a year ago.
xca ventured the prediction that it would
early receive full proof of popular lavor.
.w?paper inen,gven more than others,
are proii when history writes the fulGH
uierit of their prophecies.
This, perhaps, arises from the fact that
they prophesy more than any other peo
ple but whether so or not. is not novy cur
purposes to inquire. This Company has
j.sued 7,070 policies in the very first year
,,f its labors three or four times more
than any other Company during "the same
ft-riod of its history, and fifteen times as
v.ny as what is now the largest Company
7;h world.
Our prophesy was founded on a careful
I-n,ly of its character, and a knowledge of
tlmun having it in charge,
i Thr Company is a stock Company, with
I ,-,w rates ot premium, and with e.vperi-
fucc and economy in its management..
In a mutual company, it is the policy
jiold-rs only who suffer when the manage
ment is experienced or extravagant, while
jn : stock company the losses fall alto
"filier on the stockholder. So far as we
lif.ve observed the policy holders have
I nulling to do with the control of a mutual
i company, and are rapidly learning that it
isclieapif and wiser to procure insurance
win-re thoy are not required to advance
inyu'v above the actual cost of insurance.
I i:Ii which to pay enormous salaries to
nKker?. or to reimburse the company for
i. iii Tircniinm notes taken in lieu of
I tnit. which ran novi'r lx collected.
The National Company recognizes this
popular want and meets it. It is well
wurthy the patronage it is receiving, and
I which will undoubtedly in the future rap-
Wly increase. Such at any rate is our
sccoad prophesy in relation to it.

A VOICE FROM THE MIXES.
The miners of California are a straight
forward and outspoken-class. What they
tmnk-, they say. and what they say is al
ways to the point. If there is anything
they particularly detest, it is humbug.
When, therefore, they endorse, in the
most enthusiastic language, the merits of
IIOSTETTER-S STOMACH BITTERS as
a preventive of the intermittent and re
mittent fevers prevalent in the gold re
gions in the Spring and Fall, and as a
means of strengthening, cheering, and sus
taining them at all seasons in the prose
cution of their arduous labors, it may be
taken for granted that they speak from
experience, and that their testimony is
prompted by a grateful remembrance ot
the benefit they have derived from the
preparation. During the past year, up
wards of oxe Tuorsixa letters have been
received from gold-diggers, employees in
quartz-crushing mills. &c, Ac, dated from
every portion of the Pacific ffold regior,
and they all tell the same simple story of
sickness averted or cured by this potent
prosective and restorative. From dis
tricts where fie water and air are inimi
cal to health and life, come the mostcheei-'
ing accounts of the improved physical
condition of the inhabitants, consequent
upon the general use of the famous vege
table tonic and alterative. Epidemic
diarrhoea and dysentery, bilious and gas
tric fevers, fever and ague, and scorbutic
diseases, are state d to be literally disap
ptarinrj in the localities where it has bt
come a staple. Malaria appears to have
no effect upon sy steins tone 1. regulated
and reinforced by HOSTETTER S BIT
TERS. In all the cities and towns of Cal
ifornia they are rapidly displacing the
adulterated stimulants heretofore used as
medicines, and now, like an echo of the
praise accorded to the article in the
denselypopulated localities cf the State,
comes back this emphatic and enthusias
tic voice of approval from every segment
of the golden circle tf the Pacific Ter.i
tory.
