"We invUe the attention of our readers ) a C'S contained in an item on the flt 'page of this paper concerning Life Insurance. The National Life Insurance Comnany of the L'nirvd States is undoubt edly one of the very best companies doing business in the United Stales. Vi'e understand that .Mr. N. Ilann, late President of, the Willamette Steam boat Company, is about to build a steamer for use on the Uinpqua river. The citizens of Gardner City have rais ed quite a sum 0f money to aid Mr. llaun in this enter prise. lion. I. P. Thompson and Mr. John MeMrnin have each returned from a sum mer's service in the field, in the United .States? Department surveys in Oregon.' BoHi were rather more picturesque than prepossessing" in appearance when they returned, showing evident signs, of fa tiguing tramps. . In addition to the number of speci mens of art wrought by ihe hands ofladies in this city, already mentioned, we must refer to a fine wreatlof wax flowers made by Mrs. T. A. Phoads. 1C is truly beauti ful. Mrs. 'V. 13. Blanchard, Mrs. Wortman, Mrs. D. C. Ireland, Mrs. C. W. Tcdd, Mrs. Shattuck. Mrs. DilU-r, Miss S. Athey. Miss flood, and several others have each pro- dueed splendid counterfeits of the 11 oral kind in wax, so natural as to almost defy detection. Mrs. E. Gerry is now produc ing some beautiful specimens of hair work. We are not advised as to bow in my of these will be on exhibition at the approaching State Fair, but in all proba bility a number of them will be there is our tiope. Wilson's. Circus opened at the hour as advertised, to give an exhibition in this city, on Monday evening last. After about -4 00 persons, old and young, had been seated, one section of the staging (cats) gave5 way. throwing at least one half of the whole audience to the ground. Several persons were slightly injured, a great many badly seared, and three or four seriously injured. Mrs. Piley had one of her lewer limbs broken, in two places, but she is under treatment, and will not, it is thought, be permanently crippled. Mrs. Win. Barlow has suffered considerably bom internal injuries caused by the fall, but her friends are hopeful for her speedy recovery. One ol the most, ridiculous features of the casualty resulting from Wilson's Circus coming to this city, was that of a man running pell mell through Main Mreet, yelling at the topof his voice that the tent had fallen, several persons killed, etc. His cries caused a perfect panic in the street, and when the true state of af fairs were known lie would have been rougfily handled for his impromptu ejacu lations, by many who ielt themselves ter ribly shocked by his manner. This mar be the way alarms are given, in such cases. but we question the propriety of it better always keep as cool as possible in the face of danger. The location for the Clack;imns Kail road bridge has been changed, recently, to a more eligible site, just above the Ca-f-on bridge on the Portland road. The corner stone of the first pier, or abutment, of the structure, was properly laid on lust Tuesday evening, by Mr. Mediy Superin tendent of that branch of the work, in commemoration of an event of consider able import in the family of his employer. Mr. Pen llolladay. being no les-? than that of the 21.;t anniversary of the birth of his son, Joseph llolladay. May the f tincture speedily vif-e. and long sun ive. to perform its part in the great work so well begun, of transforming this vast area, this beautiful Oregon, now so little known to even the few here, into a region which phall be celebrated for the sobriety, honor, prosperity and happiness of its thousand of enterprising people. May Mr. Medley be ever, as now, an ardent well-wisher lor the prosperity of his friends, and may Mr. llolladay never regret that his nmjoi ity was thus commemorated. The habit' of sijning everything that is presented to the people for theii signatures, so common to most men, has received quite a back-set in this com 0ruunity. Sot long ago a petition was in circulation to have a certain road changed, leading to and from this city. The 'peti tion"' was numerously signed by "friends"' of the jeiUioners that is to say : the per sons to be directly accommodated. but nothing was said at the time about a cer tain day's work, or its " "equivalent. " which Marshal Ryan car.e around to see about a few days ago. Nobody refused to ray, (who tad signed) because there was 'the order of the Court" over the seal trad attestation of the County Clerk; but almost everybody (who had signed) ac knowledged themselves sold, and adopted a certain preamble and resolution. folt"n forth the whys and wherefores, and resolv ing to know, hereafter, when they sia a petition, what it is going to cost. On the 21st instant. Thomas M P-l, conmenced an action against Charles F. Kobbins, of San Francisco, fur $50.n:)n tlaimed for goods, jvares and merchandise sold and delivered, coiicislinrr of type and priuting material. Somktjiixg New. Yesterday morninj. we were soraevfhat puzzled at the lond. clear ringing of. a bell, in the dense fog which over-hung the Willamette river. Upon repairing to the wharf the obliging Captain Kellogg called our attention to a fine, larce, steel bell, properly.-hung on the promenade deck of the steamer Alert, as the cause cf the mysterious sounds. The bell had been furnished " for the oc casioiv' by MV. C. II. Myers of Portland and the steamer had announced her arri val in good, old Mississippi style but ii was a new thing on the waters of the Wil lamette. Wre think it would be a good plan for the P. T. Co., to use bells on their boats instead of whistles and then people would not get confused and mis take the whistles of our factories for the' whistles of the boats. Mr. and Mrs. A. M. St. Clair, of Mel rose, Massachusetts, passed through this place during the week, stopping over one night, and Mrs. St. Clair delivered a rrost excellent lecture " The Maiden, the Wife and the Mother." to an oudien of about one hundred ladies and gentlemen, at the Circuit Court Pooni. The advice contain ed in that Lecture is worthy to be engrav ed upon the plate of every household in the land. Mrs.'St. Clair will lecture from here to Victoria, and thence to their east ern home, via. Walla Walla and Poise, thus completing a very eventful tour over and across the continent, thousands of miles, in their own private carriage, which will furnish hr with abundant materials for future lectures in the east. Mrs. Piley, the lady who had one of her lower limbs broken in the circus tent on Monday evening last, was paid $75 by the treasurer of the Company on the day following and Dr. Barclay was given $10 by the same person, to attend to the case. This is alUhat was asked of the Company for the injuries resulting from the acci dent. Che; p ! --The Wtbfoot is the largest sh'p which has yet been built in Oregon. She was built at Coos Pay. Her. capacity may be judged when it is stated that on a late trip she took from Coos Bay 105,000 feet of lumber. A party of prospectors who have la'ely returned from a tour in the moun tains, between the head waters of Myrtle creek and North Umpqua river, report the discovery of extensive diggings, where they estimate (hat sixty cents to the pan may be made without difficulty.
