Mi-lks fcToi-Kx. On Wednesday night
two mules belonging to Chas. Stewart
were stolen from Mr. "Wilkinson's pasture
at the lower part of town. Mr. Stewart
traced them towards Fosters, r.nd
the thieves probably are making for the
Northern country. Sheriff Myers has
gone in pursuit.
Since the above was placed in type. Mi
Myers has returned with the animals, but
the thief escaped.
Matters About Home. Our letter this
week from Cascade Trecinct. is worthy of
thoughtful perusal. It shows progress in"
that part of the county and sets a good
example for residents of other precincts.
We invite correspondence from all who
feel a pride in '-matters about home'
Mr. S. Ackerinan and family, also his bro
ther of Eugene, returned to this city on
Wednesday last. Judging from the ap
pearance of the goods unpacked, and the
number of packages and cases already ar
ri ,-ed. Mr. Ackerman has purchased a very
extensive and superb stock of goods for
the Oregon City trade this winter
Messrs. S. Cram, Andrew Willis, and Co.,
have opened out in the livery business in
superb style, in this city, at the popular
stable lately owned by Mr. Partlow. Our
citizens can there find elegant carriages,
and good horses, at :t a onable rates
Mr. W. B. Partlow is now finely fixed on
his farm, comfortable and at hom', with
his family. We have been placed under
obligations to him repeatedly for choice
specimens of the products of his orchards
and fields. Success attend him " The
farmer feedeth all."
We observe fiat Mr- I. Soiling rood-rod a.
quantity of new goods by the last steamer.
He has been selling at very low rates for
some time past, and no doubt will continue
to do so. Read his advertisement
Persons interested in titles to lots or blocks
in the '-County Addititn to Oregoi City,"
are requested to read the Commissioners'
notice, on the 1th page of this paper
The Circus, which will exhibit in this city
on Monday evening next, is said to be the
best which ever cam3 to Oregon. The
agent, Mr. Marshall, is 'making prepara
tions for a grand entertainment in Port
land, upon anival of the company there. .
The past few days have been quite stormy
interfering slightly with the progress of
work upon the railroad, but no stoppage
has occurred in consoquence. The ship
Xoric i j is discharging her cargo of iron
on board of a coasting barque for Port
land. Two locomotives are daily expect
ed to arrive in San Francisco, for this
road. The days of dirkness for the com
pany have past, let the rains descend. . .
S.-veral items are unavoidably delayed,
for want of time. The northern mail
closes at. 2 v. m. '' Cal.'" and "Homer,"
like time and tide, " wait for no man."
Cottonwood Paper. Messrs W. W.& II.
S. Puck of the Oregon City Paper Mills
have laid on our table some paper made
from the fibrin of Cottonwood. In ap
pearance it is something between manil
la and straw paper, and we think it "is
much stronger than the straw paper.
There is an abundance of Cottonwood
growing along our streams and wiio
knows but that paper made out of -wood
may become an important industrial pur
suit in this county.
Thanks. The Baptist Sunday School, at
its session last Sunday afternoon, unani
sly voted thanks to those who so gen
erously, responded to the solicitations of
its committee last week for funds to add to
the library. The sum raised by the com
mittee of four young Misses was $o3 00.
Three members of the Church had agreed
'o double the amount the committee
should secure, so the school will realize
$1UG 00 from the effort.
It is resolved, that the Committee of
Avrangments of the fire department, for
.he festival and ball, had on the. evening
of the 10th of September. 1SG9, tender
our sincere thanks to the ladies of Ore
gon City that so nobly give and tendered
their services and assistance on that occa
sion. By order of the
COM. OF ARRANGMENTS.
