In the evening he will deliver an address on the subject of missions. 1 -Mr. ThTn. OXitd FThiTcity, on last I Wednesday presented Mr. J. M. Cacon with Vc-veral Roman. French, and German coins Avich will add materially to the collection V of old and unique coins being made by 31r. Bacon. ! Judge Kelly, who was here with the jlouse Committee on Ways and Means I recently, wrote a long account of what i he saw during his trip to thi. coast, which published in Forney's Press of August 27th. J - . It will be seen by advertisement that t on the 20th Wilson's Great World Circus ? w ill exhibit in Oregon City. This week Mr. Ii. Ii. Mael left on our table four apples of the talpabockin . variety, which weighed a little over six 1 pound.'?, or a little more than a pound and ' half each. They were raised on his " firm a few miles from tbi city. Who can hov larger ones ? Qo. Several of our friends have in quired of us if we h;id quit the practice of tlw law, since we took charge of the E ' tebpbisk. Wc answer No; the day time is i devoted to our professional business, and cur leisure hours of evenings to the paper. : Through mistake we last week men tioned that Rebecca Degree Lodge No. 2 ' of this city, had selected the first and fourth s Tuesday evenings, of each month, for the regular meetings. The paragraph should have read secowtZ and fourth Tuesday, etc. ; There-will be a meeting on Tuesday eve ning next. Tie ship Xvricay, 157 days from Car diff, arrived in San Francisco harbor on - Saturday. This is the ship which brings Holladay k Co.'s iron for the first twenty wiles of the Oregon Central Railroad. Nothing short of an earthquake at the hay. or a ship wreck on the coust. can now prevent the iron from reaching its destination in time. riuxTKit's Rkmembkijkd. We are under many obligations to Mr. Samuel Hughes for a box of splendid apples and pears 1 f t at our office last week. At the same time he left a beautiful specimen of silici fiL'd fir of which quite an abundance exists in bis neighborhood, about 18 miles east of this place. T1k Oregon'mn says real estate trans nctions are becoming frequent, showing quite a changs for the better. .Farming lands are now beginning to move. This i as it should be. Rotter for Portland and the State at large, were one half the real property to change hands. In this way much improvement would be made which in present hands would not be thought of. We have received a copy of the min utrs of the twenty-first Anniversary of the Willamette Baptist Association, held with the West Union B iptist Church, Oregon, June 25, 8G9. The minutes show an ac cession of IS members since the last an nual meeting. The present membership i 322, with ten churches, two of which are in this county. The Commercial says that the comple tion of two superb passenger cars at East 1'ortland. the arrival of iron for the road, etc.. "begins to look like a partial fulfill ' ment of the sanguinary predictions so "long and so often indulged in." The Unionist refers to the fact that four loco motives are now on the way here, consign ed to Ben. Holladay & Co., two of which are coming across the continpnt by rail. The steamer Ranger wa3 totally de stroyed, at Sauvie's Island, on Saturday night last, by fire occasioned, it is thought, imperfect " banking'' of her fires after she laid up for the night. Her passengers and crew were barely saved, and that is all. This is thg first steamer destroyed by fire on Oregon waters, that we have yet dearned of. Ruby Gray's Strategy, by Mrs. Ann Stephens, is the title of an entire new nov d from the pen of this talented American authoress, now in press, and to be pub lished in a few days by T. B. Peterson & Brothers, Philadelphia. The novels of Mrs. Stephens are productive of both pleas ure and excitement. They arc, moreover, always successful, for the reason that while this gifted author is a conscientious follower of nature, he has also that fine Qvrtistic sense which teaches that nature, when shown within the lines of art, must be measurably heightened, colored, and enlarged. This is the real secret of suc cessful writing a secret appreciated by fuch masters of fiction as. Dicken3 and Thackeray. There is no previous work of Mrs. Stephens so full of her peculiar power and genius none so absorbing in concep-J tton and development as Ruby Gray's Mrategy." It is rally equal to her" Fash ion and Famine." The price is only $1.75, On last Thursday we passed over that portion of the route of the Oregon Centra Railroad, lying between this place and Salem. The work of grading is progress, ing rapidly, and we were informed by one oAhc Superintendents of the work that the Company would have the grading of twenty miles finished by the middle of week after next. From present indications we would not be surprised to find it so. Our attention has been attracted by a beautiful bouquet of wax-flowers, orna menting the parlor at the Cliff Ilouse.which were wrought by the fair hands of Miss Mollie Barlow. The flowers were fashion ed from nature's own models, and they are of exquisite taste. Mollie certainly de serves a premium for the care she has be stowed upon that bouquet. We learn that Mrs. John F. Miller has a similar one, but much larger, just completed, which is greatly admired. It will indeed be singu lar if Oregon City is not represented by the "fair'' at the approaching State Fair. Rev. J. W. Sellwood returned to this city on Thursday morning last, after an absence of several weeks, during which time he has traveled, with his wife, as far south as Jacksonville, preaching in most places of importance on the way. He at tended Convocation at Portland. We to welcome him back to this parish, where he has been missed by his many parishioners during his absence. As we go to press with our paper on Friday afternoons, in order to meet the mails for our county towns, we are denied the pleasure, this week, of giving proper notice of the doings of the Fire Department to-day, September 10th, in housing their new machines in their new house3. The procession formed at three o'clock r. m. and preceded by the Oregon City Brass Band marched through the principal streets, pre senting a very line appearance. The cere. monies close with dancing in the evening. at the Court House, and a Festival at the hall of Columbia Hook & Ladder Company The proceeds of these cntertaiuments are to be devoted toward the purchase of an alarm bell. Hon. Schuyler Colfax, Vice President of the United States, made many friendly calls upon our citizens on Tuesday last, among whom he seemed to be quite at home. Tire Editor was absent, but Mr Colfax paid the Financial Agent a visit and was cordially received. He was ac companied to this place by Senator Cor- bett. The party left Portland for Sacra mento yesterday, and from there will re turn to the east as rapidly as possible. The Herald, speaking of Mr. Colfax, says : 4i He looks fiesh and youthful, and his mental vision is as keen as ever. " It is said that as presiding officer of the Senate he carries the same steady aud even hand that lie did as Speakar of the House of Representatives. His urbanity certainly has not abandoned him, as we can testify. The interview was exceedingly pleasant, and our high regard for him as a man greatly augmented. The editorial staff of the4Herald are pleased to acknowledge the honor of a visit from the next highest offi cer of the American Republic. The Seventeenth Annual Convocation of the Protestant Episcopal Church con vened in Trinity Church, Portland on Friday September 3rd, Right Rev. B. Wistar Morris presiding. All the clergy of this diocese were present, and a goodly number of the laity. Much business of importance was transacted pertaining to the work of the church. The Bishop's ad dress, delivered at the opening of the con vocation, was able and exhibited the true missionary ring. The religious services formed a A ery interesting and profitable feature of the Convocation. Rev. Mr. Bonnell of Salem, preached on Thursday evening, Rev. Mr. Hyland of Olympia on Friday evening. Rev. Mr. Sellwood of Oregon City, on Saturday evening. On Sunday morning the Bishop preached a most able ami deeply interesting sermon to a very large congregation. In the eve ning a missionary meeting Avas held and addresses were delivered by Rev. Messrs. Bonnell, ,T. W. Sellwood. P. E. Hyland and Dr. Johnson.- Thus ended one of the most pleasant Convocations evere held in Ore gou. and full of the most cheering pros pects for the future. On the Monday fol lowing St. Helen's Hall opened with ffly pupils. Saltjm; We spent a portion of this week in Salem -and must say- that wc were a little surprised at the number of substantial and beautiful brick buildings that have been erected in that city during the past year, and still the work goes steadily on. General Heed is now putting up a three story brick building, which, when finished would be an ornament to any city. ut the improvements are not m buildings aloiiCj the people have so beautified their grounds with ever greens and other shade trees that in a few years our State Capital will be the most bcautiiul inland city on the Pacific coast.
