pryri..IM.,a'JBC!gi O O is nothing right? I strive, yet nothing it seems 13 right ; I)y Fate's decree Whatever I do or think the best Fault comes to me. Is there no end to this sad fate For one so low ; Or must I still, without complaint, . Receive the blow? The time will come to me, I know,. By some kind friend, "When all that seems so wrong of me Shall have an end ; , Yet what care I for friend or foe And all their might ? -The conscience pure no one can kill "When I do right. J. Dellazcn White., t- , ASPIRATIONS. Our aims are all too high ; we try To gain the summit at a bound, "When we should reach it step by step, And climb the ladder round by round, lie who would climb the height sublime, Or breathe the pure air of life, Must not.expect to raise in ease, But brace himself for toil or strife. "We should not in our blindness seek To grasp alone for grand and great, Disdaining every smaller good. For trifle makes the aggregate. And if a cloud should hover o'er Our weary pathway like a pall, Remember God permits it there, And His good purpose reigns o'er all. Life should be full of earnest work. Our hearts undashed by fortune's frown; Let perseverance conquer fate, And merit seize the victor's crown. The battle is not to the strong. The race not always to the fleet ; And he who seeks to pluck the stars, Will lose the jewels at his feet. The President of the Western Union Telegraph recently made an elaborate argument before a C011 gresMonal Committee, against the proposed union of the postal and telegraphic systems. It was con tained in a written document which was devoted to a comprehensive statement of facts connected with the present condition of telegraphy in Europe and the United States. Mr. Orton showed that there are a l'gt'i' number of telegraph of fices, in proportion to the popula tion, in the United States than in any other country in the world. The "Western Union Telegraph Company transmitted 10,007,000 telegrams per annum. Jn no count ry m Europe ts the 3 telegraphic ad-! 'Cted yith the I mmstration connectc postollice. In Franco and Spain the telegraphs are under the con trol of the .Ministers of the Inte terior. In Russia, Prussia and It- .alv thev belong to the Ministers of Public Works. In Belgium the telegraph, railways and the post of- nea iorm a general division, un der the Minister of Public Works, but are kept distinct. In Austria the administration of the telegraph and the postofhees were once uni ted, but it was found expedient to separate them. In Switzerland the telegraph organization is near ly the same as in Prussia. The ex tent of the lines and wire belong ing to the Western Union Tele graph Company is more than twice that of France, three times great er than that of Prussia, and equals the aggregated system of Austria, Prussia, the lesser German States, Italy, Spain, Belgium, and Switzer land; and it is increasing in larger ratio than any European system. The Western Union telegraph has lidded to its lines during the year 1808 more than. 5,000 miles of wire; or as much as the entire system of Belgium. In no country in the world is there so vast a system of lines, under one control, as in this .country. Acnoss the Continent. It is said that some time between the 3 5th of May and the 1st of June, A. O. Me Grew, the reporter and newspaper correspondent, who crossed the Plains with a wheel barrow, will cross the continent from New York to San Francisco, in a two-wheeled velocipede, in competition with another well known journalist of New York. It is this sort of fotiy that plays the mischief with two-thirds of the sex. (If women would devote half the at tention to the culture of their intel lects, that they do to the adorn ment of their persons, we should soon see them occupy the highest rung of .the social ladder. A Bright ami beautiful bin! is Hope; it comes to us amid the darkness and the storm, and sings the sweetest song; when our spir its are saddest," and the soul is weary, and longs to pass awav, it warbies its sunniest notes and light ens again the te'nder fibres of our hearts that grief has been tearing away. o-e. A good looking, thriving, live newspaper helps to sell property, gives character to the lo cality, and in all respects is a desirable public convenience.
