MART. Mary has a Grecian Bend "Which springs her like a bow, And looks, when sticking up on end, Like hump of buffalo. It follows her behind all day "When she goes forth to school, And makes the children laugh and play, To rind her such a fool. The teacher shocked, in silence turns, His blushing face he veil.-, And Mary then how wicked learns It is to bear false tales. AGRICULTURAL FACTS. Land is held at not les3 than $100 within as many miles of San Francisco, and it is dearer within ten miles than within ten miles of London. Some of the sugar plantations of Louisiana had done so well this year as to have yielded sums equal hi value to lands, houses, and machinery. Tippecanoe County, Indiana, of fers x.30,000 if the "State will lo cate the Agricultural College with in their limits. That is not only puhlic spirit, hut true thrift. Esparto grass will be sowed considerably in South Carolina this Spring. It is raised as easily as clover, and affords a good substi tute for rags in making paper. In the past the chief study has been to take the greatest weight of grain from land; in future the chief care w ill be to take the greatest weight of meat from an acre. The good time coming will be gin when the horse-power in farm work eats coal instead of corn, and when the scum of cities enriches the earth instead of polluting air and defiling water. When a tun of wheat is mark eted it leaves nothing behind but worth of straw, When a tun of meat is sold, it has left behind it nine-tenths of the mammal value of the food consumed in making it. The highest order of charity is that which provides employment for the willing laborer, and leaves uneompromised his self-dependence: work without wages makes slaves; wages without work makes pau pers. The quality of food from land marks man's advance. The sav age gets a few pounds of wild meat lrom an acre; the half civil ized a few bushels of coarse grain; the civilized man takes wheat and juicy ilesh from his surface. Wheat bran, oatmeal, scraps of meat, cheese-rinds should be fed to hens at this time of the year, be cause thev contain albumen, of which there is much in an egg. Chopped vegetables will make them healthy; corn meal is more useful in fattening poultry. In consequence of the great in crease of farm implements, the question must soon be met: Can fifty small farmers, with little or no machinery, compete success fully 0with one farmer who owns as much land as all of them, and abundant machinery for it workinc: A Committee of Boston ladies has appeared pet ore a committee of tlie Massachusetts Horticultural Society, and consulted with them on a plan for a srhool of garden inr for women. Thev want 100 acres near a good market, and pro pose to make the school industrial ami s el f-s 1 1 ppo rt i n g. The Fruit Grower's Association at Rochester have been discussing whether it pays best to raise a large crop of a proline variety or a few choice and high-priced sorts. One gentleman said, that in Roch ester it costs six cents to grow a juart of Wilsons strawberries. The testimonv was that it is more profitable to raise the liner varie ties. "Within nine years past the Ne braska lands have increased most in value. They sell now for near ly four times as much as they did just before the war. During the same period Louisiana propertv has decreased most, selling now 70 percent below what it was worth when the State was represented in the United States Senate by Ju dah P. Benjamin. Lands are made to increase year Iv in fertilitv, mainly in three wavs by buying commercial fertilizers. by plowing under clover, by buy ing rich food for animals and sav ing all their droppings. The blooms of the common mar igold calendula infused in equal parts of pure alcohol and water, is an admirable remedy for all kinds of wounds, cuts, bruises, and burns, on man or beast. Pfeil, Arenzville, Cass county Illinois, isieeeived with no litfle favor in the west. Almost in credible stories are told of its excellence and elliciency in plowing the prairie fields of Illinois and other States. The depth of the furrow is regulated by the crank-axle, which is so arranged that the ploughs can be driven deeper or shal lower at the pleasure of the driver, when the team is moving, by means of the lever. We also manufacture sulkey plows for small boys, or infirm person who are unable to manage a team of three or four horses. This giitiir or sulkey plow, will cut a fur row from "2 to 10 inches deep. "The committee who tested the draught of this plow v ita ;i dynamometer state, that it ran lighter by 14n pounds, than other plows when running at the same deptii, and held by the plowman while on foot." tZ3f Willi this Plow one man can da more work than two men can do with walking Plows, and the same amount of team.
