j is: StljcttJcckln Enterprise. TOWN AX JO COUNTY. -The JTattie G. Hessie the third vessel in the Mercer 1'ioneer line from New York, is nowm tnis river. m, , : The Wallamet fanner is 62 50 a year, and it is well worth the money. John Bacon, of this fcity, is agent. nartv of gentlemen from fian "Francisco come as guests of 3Ir. Ilolladay on the unjtamme, and will proceed with him to Pu ffet Sound, leaving Portland on the -L'Oth. fm Mr. A. J. Marshall caught 84 mountain trout in less than 2 hours. He won't tell the place, but will tell that he bought his hooks and lines at A. Levy's. We are not given to, very much flattery of the Enterprise, preferring to let it speak for itself but we do feel a pride in the new dress which it wears to-day, for the first time. Just as we go to Press, on Fridav morning we learn that the case of Clackamas County against the P. T. Co., which has been on trial at Portland this weck, has been decided in favor of the county, and to. verdict rendered against the Com rpany for damages done to the Ca jieniah road in the sum of 2,666. Arrangements have been made lr the P. T. Co., to run a through hoSt to Salem on Sunday, the 25 th instant to accommodate the Fellow's of Portland and Ore gon City who desire to attend the ' celebration at Salem, on the 26th, nd there will be a return boat on Tuesday. ; -A man by the name of Mr. '.Norton, died near this city on Wednesday la.st from injuries re ceived by a rifle shot which was accidentally discharged when he threw the carcass of a deer into his wagon. The ball passed through the end gate of the wagon box, and entered the fleshy part of his leg, carrying splinters and wadding with it. Wc acknowledge the receipt of a card of invitation to the Odd Fellows' Anniversary Ball, to be civen at the Wigwam, Salem, Monday evening, the 26th. The . card itself is a little the neatest and most beautiful thing of the kind we have ever eeen a satin surface and erfect imitation of pearl. The printing a neat job, also was done at one of the Salem offices. Wc were pleased to renew an old acquaintance last week with Hon. VT. Engle, of Bclpassi. Mr, Fngle reports everything flourish ing in that part ot Alarion county. " The Belpassi school will commence again next week, under the direc tion ot Mr. 1. S. Leonard, an ex perieiced teacher recently engaged at .Day ton. Messrs. i-jigle & Co. have lately completed a new saw mill, of large capacity. Belpassi is the Home of Hon. Samuel Brown, .jaind it, is a first rate place for good Union men to settle in. The Albany Democrat saj-s that the laudations of the P. T. , Co., for placing the fine steamer . -Jieliance at the disposal of ths Al bany firemen for an excursion to Corvallis, are undeserved That 'the day on which the excursion to Corvallis was made, was the regu lar trip-day of the bait, and she would have gone up anyhow. She : raised steam and started at her usual hour; and by being so early many persona in Albany who in- . tended to go were left behind. 'The Fire Company thus lost a nice little sum of money, which they 'might now have, had the boat tar .ried a rtittle." We esteem Capt, ; Cochrane as a perfect gentleman, aml of course do not attribute any iblame to him. j The Oregonian was of the opinion that the bill signed by Pres ident Grant, as reported on the 10th irrantinf lands for the construction 4t a railroad from the Central Pa cific Railroad to Portland iu Ore gon, is in the interest of the so vtalled Pcngra route. Never worse Mistaken in your life, Scott. That autograph was, in all probability, fflxexi to the amendment offered by Senator Williams, which saves to this State its portion of the grant Bi$de inl866, to aid in the con duction of a Railroad from the sr1 Padfic to Portland. The rVvf enSra route is almost a 'Sk lme' und Congress has too auch judgement to rant sixteen or twenty millions more, so soon, tor such an enterprise in this val ru AnythQ pcngra bill, when jast heard from stood stock still in the Senate, without a hope of reach es the House, The Union Pacific surveyors have reached Umatilla. The OregonianhopQH that the office hunting mania will not spread among the women. . The Odd Fellow's Hall Asso ciation of Portland advertise for bids for the erection of their hall. . : The first session of the forty first Congress has closed in per fect harmony with the President. . - s Iloratio Cook, Senior, died in Portland on the 14th, at the age of 70 years. Mr. Cook was one of the Pioneers of this State. What good is expected by those Democratic papers to result, from their continually grumbling at and abusincr ministers of thr - - gospel for their prayers for Grant ? . The salmon fishery business is greatly over-rated. The catch last vear did not come up to the estimate by several thousand dol lars worth. i S. N. Arrigoni, whose fame as a Host is as wide spread as that of the Lelands, will open Capt. Fla vcls new fine hotel at Astoria, now nearly complete. This Hotel will be as near a perfect house as any on this coast. It is to be called Tlte Occident. We have before referred to Mr. Bartsch as a Piano Tuner. His card will be found in our paper to-day. Mr. B. comes to ns well recommended by persons who have employed him, and Ave have no hesitation in saying that we believe him as competent to do this par ticular work as any person on the Pacific coast. The Treasurer of Washington county declines to pay interest coupons on the West Side railroad bonds, upon the ground that the statutes of this State do not author ize him to pay orders drawn on the treasury of the county by the coun ty Judge, and that the same are not orders contemplated by the statutes. The Commercial says': "Mr. Gans, of Oswego, has recently re ceived the appointment as post master there and qualified to-ddw Mr. G. is a merchant at that placti and is in every respect qualified to discharge the duties of the posi tion. Arrangements will shortly be made to have a semi-weekly mail ;heretofore, there being no reg ular line established, the citizens have been four months without any office sX alL"" From December 1st to March 29th, 2,330,001 shares of mining stocks, of a reputed value amount ing to $246,834,000 were issued in California, for alleged mines in White Pine. Hon. Alonzo De lano, Old Block, of G rass Vallev, California, assures us in a private letter, that White Pine is a su preme swindle on a big scale. We concur in his view of the matter. -- Mr. C. H. Myers, of Portland, whose advertisement will be seen in our paper to-day is emphatical ly a live man. When at Portland this week "we found Mr. Myers filling orders for force pumps from Eastern Oregon and Idaho; Gas fixtures for San Francisco ; a cook ing range for Washington Territo ry ; besides any number of small orders ior oatn tubs, boilers, wash stands, tubes, guages, etc., etc. There is never a hotel, public build ing, or private residence arranged in these parts with the modernlm jn'ovements, that Myers is not counselled. He is an old Wash ington City plumber and gas fitter a direct importer, and a gentle man. . The Oregonian of Wednesday thus refers to an historical event in the printing business of Jhis coast: The first font of type ever put in case in Oregon, was thrown in by Mr. John Fleming, of Oregon City, in February, 1846, prepara tory to the. first isue of the Spec tator. Since then it has experi enced various fortunes. It was used in the publication of the Spectator while that journal lived, and if we mistake not. in the Ar gus, which was published many years alterward at Oregon City. It has been used at Eugene City and also at at Astoria, at the latter place in the Gazette office. Thence it returned to Oregon City, when Mr. Ireland commenced the publi cation of the Enterprise, and has remained there since, till day be fore yesterday, when Mr. Ireland brought it to this city and sold it to the Wallamet Iron Works, as old and worn out type, to be used m making box metaL On the day it was packed m the Enterprise of fice for removal, Mr. Fleming came in and bade farewell to the old friends, (the types) of twenty-three vears ago. The Concert given in this city by Miss Octavia Mercier, and her two younger Sisters, on Tuesday evening of last week, drew out one of the most fashionable audiences ever congregated in the city. The singing was good, and many a la dy present no doubt secretly en vied Miss Mercier her powerful voice. Prof. H. Guido Grob was present, and assisted at the piano. By a judicious course Miss Mercier may win a fame equal to that of Jenny Lind, or the Black Swan. If she does not, it will not be her fault She is young yet. It will be seen by reference to the New Advertisements to-day, that Mr. A. J. Monroe has succeed ed to the firm of Monroe & Mellen, Monument and Tomb Stone mak ers at Salem. Mr. Monroe is as well qualified to "fill the bill" of Sculptor, as any other man in our State. His Monuments, Obelisks, etc., speak for themselves, and if persons will visit the cemetry near this city, they can inspect some of his work. He is at present en gaged upon a monument and other work for the Oregon City Cemetry. Alex. II. Stevens' History of the War, which has been for sever al weeks past advertised in this pa per, is undoubtedly the best book of the kind taking extreme South ern views that has been written. The book may be obtained in this county of Mr. D. Wright, who is the only authorized agent for the sale of it in this part of the State. The advertisement of the canvass er says: The intense desire everywhere manifeted to obtain this work, its official character and ready sale, combined with a very liberal commission, makes it one of the best Sub scription Books published. The eastern press, both North and South, have universally commended its candor and moderation. Messrs. J. Lyons and F. O'Con nor, have just newly furnished the What Cheer House, Portland, and thoroughly renovated every room. The What Cheer has always been a favorite hotel of Portland, and the present proprietors aim to con tinue to make it so. See adver tisement. Rev. Dr. Atkinson will pre side at the Congregational Church in this city to-morrow. Rev. Mr. Gerry will fill Dr. Atkinson's pul pit in Portland. Ctipt. Baughman has decided upon going to White Pine. He will leave here within a few days. We wish him all good luck possi- ble. h 1 -- Maj. Charman has sailed for San Francisco, intending to bring back with him a larger stock of spring and summer goods than ever before brought by one firm to this place - A small 'stern wheel steamer has been shipped to Alaska from San F rancisco, to ply on the Yu kon river.
