TIic " oi ia Would be tlie Better for It. !
If racn cared less for wealth and fame
And less for battle fields and glory
If writ, in human hearts a name
Seem better than in fame or story;
If men instead of nursing pride
Would learn to hate it, and abhor it
If more relied on love to guide,
The world would be the better for it.
If men cared less for stccks and lands
And more for bonds and deeds fraternal -If
love works had more willing hands
To link this, world to the supernal ;
If men stored up Love's oil and wine,
And in poor hungry homes would pour it-
If yours and mine would once combine,
The world would be the better for it.
If men were wise in little things,
Conveying less in all their dealings
If hearts had fewer rusted strings
To isolate their kindly feelings ;
If men, when wrong beats down the right,
Would strike together and restore it
If Right made Might in every fight,
The world would be the better for it.
If men would act the play of life
And fewer spoil it in rehearsal
Ifi'gotry would sheaihe its knife
Till good becomes more universal
If Custom, gray with ages grown,
Had fewer blind men to adore It
If Talent shone for truth alone,
The world would be the better for it.
MAKI3.G LAW S FOIt FAKJIERS.
The Germantown, Pennsylvania,
Tetegrajyi,' has a very good lilt at
city farmers. It says:
Thev often do not know one breed
of cattle from another, a cherry tree
from an apple tree, or a cabbage from
a cauliflower. Their queer notions
afford amusement to sensible culti
vators of the soil; biit uufortnnately
we have to pay dearly for the fun
tftey afford us. It is just these jolly
fellows who male laws for vs farm
ers, and a pretty set of rules we find!
It is the chief labor of the agricultu
ral press to keep laws from being en
acted, which these mighty magnates
in city farms are forever urging on
the Legislature.
The Legislature at Harrisburg are
now endeavoring to pass a bill to fine
and imprison any one who shoots
doves or any other " insectiverous
birds. We should like to know how
many insects a dove cats'? Virginia
goes on the other extreme. Thete
the Leaisltvturc has moved to exter-
ruinate the crow, three cents a pair
beinir criven lor their feet a sort of
"scalping'' law only from the oth
er extremity. AH these things should
be left free to the moral sense of the
community. As for birds, they are
very essential in their place; but,
when they arc too numerous for good,
as they undoubtedly are at times,
man should be left free to preserve
the proper balance.
We do not wonder at these laws,
however, when we see the lawmak
crs, as they really are, of whom the
Telegraph has spoken. Certain New
York Editors affect to represent the
whole agricultural interests of the
Union. In the name of the "Fruit
Growers of the Union," they have
asked Congress to allow new fruits to
be patented. Yet, when the real
fruit growers of the Union delegates
to the American Pomological Socie
ty met in New York recently, they
tinaiiimously voted such a law not
desirable. Curious to see these law
makers, a sensible editor lately
stepped into the seed-loft where the
creat New York institution the
"Fruit Growers' Club" was hold
a session, lie found fifty-six per
sons present, all told, including a few
elderly ladies,' a dozen of young girls,
representatives cf the Herald, Tri
luw, Times and Sun president, sec
retary, &c. fifty six in all. An an
imated discussion was going on, as to
whether a potato was a fruit or a
vegetable!! lie could scarcely believe
his own ears asked an officer of the
o.ciety and was told the'discussion
was as he' had understood it, and was
to answer some attacks of the Herald.
Then came a terrible demonstration
Against Commissioner C.'ipron. The
speaker thought the Department bet
ter abolished altogether than to be
as it is now. But the " resolution "
was drawn rather milder, and is giv
en below. It was "put," and in the
same breath declared "carried," al
. ...
luougii it is doubtful whether the
score or so of unwashed men who sat
on t.he di ty benches had any more
idea of the meaning of the " senti
ments' than the intelligent reader
now. In its st3de and grammar it is
. as perfect as its wisdom; and is a
fair specimen' of' the " great New
York lever" which tries to move the
agricultural world.
As jur Mr. Capron, tee do not
know whether he wants to remain in
office, or whether President Grant
withes to retain him- but this ice do
know, that all the best agriculturists
of the country hare full confidence in
nim. lie has managed his difficult
department admirably, end knows
strength and its weaknesses; and if

and increase its usefulness, we would
rather have a suggestion-from him,
than a thousand from such illiterate
donkeys as form tliis farmers' and
frintgroivers9 club, as seen on the oc
casion referred to.
Here is the elegant production of
this club for publication:
Resolved, That the president cf
the rruit Growers' Club, and at
least six other members, to be ap-
Dointed bv the chair, who shall be
charged with the duty of urging, in
person or otherwise, upon the i res
ident of the United States, the ap
propriate committees of Congress,
the Secretary of the Interior, and
whatever other accessible sources of
influence, the necessity of either en
larging the Bureau of Agriculture
into a full Department, s0 as t0 in"
sure greater attention to horticulture
than is possible to the present nar!
row scone of its oower. or else to
- i i - -
confer ou the Commissioner of Agri
culture more comprehensive powers,
to the end that the constantly and
rapidly increasing interests of fruit
culture may receive something like
that decree of attention at the fos-
tering hands of the National Govern
ment which they fairly demand this
being, in the judgement of the associ-l
ation, an advance step made especial
ly necessary by the practically new
ueld for horticultural enterprise soi
invitingly opened in the Southern
States, with the promise of both
profitable and beneficent results, not
only to their own people, but the
country at larsre.
We think that," before Congress or
any or our Legislatures act on any
matter purporting to benefit agricul
ture, they should be sure that the
real agriculturists or at least the
intelligence of the country desire it.
