A full attendance is requested as important buainesss will be transacted. From the California papers we learn that strawberries, green peas and aspara gus have appeared in the markets. But that is nothing ; Our friend Moses Miller, of Union precinct, in this county has bad new potatoes for a month. We acknowl edge the reception of a mess" from his garden, through Mr. Logus, of the Excel sior Market of this city. - i An entertainment will be given by "our young ladies," at the Court House in this place, on Wednesday evening next, for the Methodist Episcopal Sabbath School. All who love oysters, ice-cream, music, and good company are invited to be present. Admission 25 cents; refresh ments extra. Mis3 Octavia Mercier, a mulatto girl of Portland, who is said to possess the finest voice, and to have perfect control of it as a vocalist, Is to appear in this city on some evening next week. Her con certs at Oro Fino Theatre have always called out the fullest of houses. Of course our citizens will all want to see and to hear her. Velocipedestrianism has run its race. We see by the telegraph, news from San Francisco that in a race of one mile, for .0. the time was nearly five minutes. Th it was a worse bilk than White Pine, or the late ve'ocipede trip to the White Hou!e trom Portland. Velocipedes bare had their day what next? At the Annual Parish Meeting of St. Paul's Church, of this city, held on Mon day evening last, the following persons were elected to act as Vestrymen for the nsuing year: John Myers. Robert Cau field. Sen., D. C. Ireland. E. D. Kelly, J, K. Ralston. Reuben Smith and II. L. Kel ly. John Myers and H. L. Kelly were ap pointed Wardens; Robert Canfield was elected Treasurer; E. D. Kelly, Secretary. Major Charman is tearing away one of the historic land marks of Main street in this city, being the frame tenement ad jacent to his private residence. This old house was built in the' White Pine" days of Oregon City, when lumber was worth $150 per thousand feet, and bard to get at that price. It was once occupied by Hon. Amory Holbrook. deceased, as a law office has been the sceoo of prominent mer cantile transactions, but of late years was occupied by Mr. Broughton, as a joiner ; and carpenter shop. The following officers were installed by Clackamas Division No. 3, Sons of Temperance, in this city on Thursday evening last. A. J. Marshall, W. P.; D. Caufield W. A.; D. C. Ireland. R. S.; H. . Straight, jr.; Assistant ; W. B. Blanchard, F. S.; J. M.Bacon, Treasurer ; J. E. Walsh. C: J. II. Sheppard. Conductor ; Parker Ward, Assistant ; G. F. Smith. Sentinel. The Division has entered upon its second term with the prospects of doing some good in the community, in concert with ahe Templars. A great revival in religions sentiment 'has lately occurred at Olympia under the .advice of Rev. I. D. Driver, late of this .city. The Echo says : For the past three weeks there have been services every day by the Rev. I. D. Driver, assisted by all "the local ministers of this place. Mr. Driver is an able man and will long be remembered by the citi zens of Olympia. While h is devoted to ' the cause ,pf religion it does not detract any from h'u social qualities, and we think the people of this place will bear us out in saying that Mr. Driver is as genial a companion as can be found in any rank of life. During his stay here tweuty-three persons united with the Church, and we have no doubt his good advice has left a "lasting impression on many others, which will result m much gocti. The Pacific Tribune cay, as an inter preter of the Scriptures, Mr. Driver excels; vhile his logical deductions carry convic tion to the minds of the most skeptical of 3ua hearers. All who are not afraid of be ing convinced against their will should Lhenr him; and, whea he vistts the towns ;belo.w, we counsel our readers to avail themselves of the opportunity to hear him. The Republican says Mr. Driver is aa .in teresting and powerful reasoner and never fails U) impress the listeners with the im portance-f his mission and the responst bility they owe to the All Wise. The'Olympia Transcript thus alludes to one ot Mc. iDnver 3 sermons: The -speaker took the broad ground that to prove the divine authenticity of the Uiole, we must seek the evidence out side of it, must prove it by collateral tes timony, and he said the one most import ant and. only faithfully to be relied on ar gument is progression. lie said without it everything would be in a state of torpi tnde that ould bring forth little or no fruit Snt the very crowning doctrine enunciated in the sermon was the appli cation of the workings and contrast of hu man and divine, or civil and moral law. He .claimed that the reasea the people in old Bible days were so barbarous was be cause they were low. ignorant, brutal, and not sufficiently enlightened to understand, appreciate or apply any law higher than that of brute force. He gaid that even now, in enlightened America, the people are not yet sufficiently moralized to allow even a tolerably moral code for our civil guidance. He showed that it would be impossible to incorporate the Ten Com mandments in our civil code, as a majori ty of the people would not submit to the restraint, while persons who are highly moralized regard their observance as a pleasure rather than a restraint He proved clearly that any attempt on the part of legislators to enforce civil or mor al codes beyond what the ideas of the people suggest is not only useless but foolish; he says educate the people up to & given degree of morals and your legis latures not only may. but must incorporate 3t into the civil code. We think that por tion of the sermon most happily applica ble to some hot-headed persons here-a-bouts who ar clamoring for certain legis lative Pn.ictmpnta fn ,-hr"h thrt moaeoa enactments lor wnicn ine masses aye ia no way prepared. Let us therefore mi at a higher grade of educational at tainments and all else will as surely fol low as the day follows the night, or the Pnng the dark days of winter. Mr. Dri ver also took occasion to administer a se vere but well merited reproof to ministers oi the gospel who neglect or forsake their a y !oVbe dirt7 po1 of Politics-bv TO CONTRACTORS. Please notice in your valuable journal that on Monday and Tuesday next, (April 5th and 6th 1869,) the quarterly oral ex amination of the pupils in all departments of the City Seminary will be held. On Wednesday the distribution of Certificates of Honor and Rolls of Honor will be made. All interested are cordially invited to at tend. Yours Truly, S. D. POPE. The Jacksonville Sentinel insinuates that thi3 paper is opposed to telling the truth with respect to the resources of Jack eon county. What silly trash! We are individually interested in wanting the whole truth. Will the Sentinel correct. OREGON. J. W. P. Huntington Esq., has been removed, and Hon. A. B. Meacham appointed to the office of Superintendent of Indian affairs for Oregon. A canary bird escaped from its cage in Salem recently, and flew across the Wallamet, some distance into Polk county, where it was found and identified. The Herald says : " Mr. Samuel Douglas is constructing a portable steam saw mill to be used in the tim ber on the east side of the river. The engine will be forty horse power and the saw 28 inches in diameter. The machinery is being cast at the Wal lamet Iron Works.' The Oregonian is informed that men of ample capital, have formed a project to improve the Tualatin river by constructing locks at the mouth, so as to allow the passage of steam ers across the Cascades ; to build steamers for the navigation of the) Tualatin ; and to erect flouring mills and other machinery for manaractur ing purposes, at the mouth of the river. The follwing are the officers of Liberty Division No. 1M S. of T., (Waldo Hills), for the ensuing quar ter: Warren Cranston, W. P.; Mrs. W. R. Dunbar, W. A.; T. B. Lfonard, R. S.; Miss C. Hibbard, A R. S.; A.Thompson, F. S.; Miss M. Geer, T.; F. Mescher, jr.; Chap.; A. A. Leonard, 0; S Cox, A. C; Wm. Cox, I. S.; C. W. Hibbard, O. S ; J. W Shrum, P. W. P. and L. B. Geer, D. D. This Division was instituted January 9th, 1869, with fourteen members, and now has a membership of thirty-three with quite a number of applications for the next meeting. The Oregonian says : Parties from Salem were at East Portland on Saturday, negotiating for the pur chase of real estate. Mr. Caon, sold a tract not far from the bridge, at the rate of two hundred and ten dollars per acre, and Mr. Stephens was offered a higher price per acre for. all his land save a small tract ly ing just about his house, on the bank of the river. We did not learn the tULtnesof the buyers, but hear that they are investing in view of the ex pected early completion of the rail road, and the consequent rise in. value of the lands. The matter has created soeae sensation at East Portland, and it as probable that figures for lots and blocks will grow now faster than be for. Speaking of real estate la Sa Iem, the Unionist says: There never has been a time, perhaps, since the settlement of this country and the founding of Salem, when real estate has been in such good demand and when prices ruled so high as at the present time. As an illustration to tbe point, we may refer to the sale of lots in Reed's addition. About two months since, Gn. C. A. Reed pur chased a tract of land lying to the east of the city, and had it surveyed into lots. Since that time be has disposed of every lot he will sell, at from 250 to $350 apiece, and yet he daily has applications for which he will not sell. The property he has disposed of sold in the aggregate for 10,550. Lots in the older parts of the city command larger prices, but there are but few to be had at any price. On the 9th of last month a camel was born at the Woodward Gardens in California; the first one born in America. Br. Derby imagines that the time may come, before long, when the present heating apparatus of our houses shall disappear and we shall receive our heat as city houses now receive their gas and, water from public sources of Supply, tn be let nn J or shut off, as we need. As the age in which we live demands progress in Farming Implements as well as in all other branches of indus try,! have entered extensively upon (he Manufacture of the Celebrated Pfeil Gang Plow ! Better known in Oregon as the W OL" GAMOTPLO Wt This Plow com . bines all the desirable points of a perm feet implement, being simple in con structwn, cheap durable, and of ught draft. The only Premiums which were awarded to Gang Plows at the. great Implement trial at Maltoon, Sept. 4, 1866, by the State Agricultural Soci. ely of Illinois, were awarded to this Plow. The following is an extract from the Report of the Commissioner of Agriculture, Jor the year 1866, and may be found on page 246 of that re port : The Ganp; Plow made by J. C. Pfeil. Arenzville, Cass county Illinois, is received with no little favor in the west. Almost in credible stories are told of its excellence and efficiency in plowing the prairie fields of Illinois and other States. " The depth of the furrow is regulated by the crank-axle, which is so arranged that the plough can be driven deeper or shal lower at the pleasure of the driver, when the team is moving, by means of the lever. We also manufacture sulkey plows for small boys, or infirm persons who are unable to manage a team of three or four horses. This gang or sulkey plow, will cut a fur row from 2 to 10 inches deep. " The committee who tested the draught of this plow with a dynamometer state, that it ran lighter by 140 pounds, than other plows when running at the same depth, ana held by the plowman while on foot." With this Plow one man can do more work than two men can do with walking Plows, and the same amount of team. Hence, it will be seen that it will more than pay for itself in one season's plowing. I will also manufacture the WEB-F00T GANG PLOW! AND THE Web-Foot Walking Plow ! Both vattems of mv own invention. for which patents have been applied for, and which have withstood practi- cat tests with the best resulls,r(ceiving flattering testimonials wherever seen or tried. Now, the Farmers of Oregon are invited to give the Oregon City Manufactory a trial.
