Josf "California, the, past Winter, and
under date of February 22, writes to
the Register as follows:.
In my brief sojourn in this State,
I have endeavored, with as much im
partiality as fallible man can control,
to acquaint myself from actual obser
vation and reliable information, with
all the desirable elements that go to
make up what are termed " the ad
vantages of California," in order that
lor my own satisfaction "I might ap
proximate a correct '"comparison be
tween tln3 and my own adopted State.
Ad-without entering a verdict, only
iiermif.me to state, in. brief a few of
the findings" of the "facts" upon
which my conclusions have been
based.-
Your perfect familiarity with Ore
gon, however,will render urmicessary
much, perhaps save an apparent. ex-
parte statement of those important
features that, from a comparative
etand point, bave conspired to shape
the conclusions ot my mind.
CLIMATE. "
The clinSate'of California is certain
ly warmer than that of Oregon.
There has' as yet, been but ten or
twelve light frosts, (at night) not
cold enough, however, to freeze the
ground in the least, or even injure
the many beautiful gardens and pleas
ure grounds of green shrubbery and
flowers. While snow, or hard freez
ing are quite unknown in this valley.
We have had some eight or ten days
of moderate rain, which, in their
cloudy, foggy, misty aspect have been
" powerful7' reminders of the " Web
foot5' country. When not raining,
the sun usually shines warm and
clear. Gardening and transplanting
of trees are. now engaging attention,
while farming is in a high state of
successful operation. But to say that
it is here warmer or colder than else
where, does not necessarily imply
that this the most desirable or the
better country. The same might be
said of Africa or of Greenland, and
prove nothing in its favor as an ele
ment of future greatness. Looking
at that zone that in the history of the
world has developed men, nations
and empires, the only pertinent ques
tion to be considered is, wehther Or
egon or California upproxiniates near
er to that standard of temperature
necessary to success. I think in the
examination, to say the least, Oregon
will lose nothing. The history of
the world has been that as you ap
p roach the tropics, indolence and ef
leminacy are superinduced, and the
cool, bracing air of Oregon is a hap.
-py medium between the extremes of
beat and cold, and can only be a
point of objection to either the lova
lid or the indolent.
SOIL. ,
To sav that the soil of California
is richer than that of Oregon, in that
it is better abapted to the growth of
vegetables, grapt-s and vegetation, of
either a tropical character would,
perhaps, bear admission, but to claim
that it is superior for the production
of those staple articles, which are the
foundation of substantial prosperity.

But I opine that the objection that
- tire soil of Oregon;, is not sufficiently
productive will ixot be urged by any
one familiar with it. Ihe want of a
easy and convenient market is know
to be the only embarrassment.

The almost total absence of timber
valleys or in sight upon the hills (ex
cept in places some scraggy oaks,
suitable for fael only) is a Tery no
ticeable feature to an Oregonian.
Good and available timber mast be
regarded as a very desirable if not
necessary element to a country's pros
perity. And when I think of the
beautiful forests of Oregon, purifying
the air with a fragrant aroma, no
wonder that Oregon can boast' of its
health, and its peculiar adaptation to
the raising tall grains and tall timber.
Bat Oregon has been a frontier State;
peopled with pioneers striving to
thrust in the great'plowshar'e of civi
lization. We have waited long, but
I now discover in the dawning vista
of a promising future, a rapid inarch
to a development of prosperity, re
markable and glorious. Let us be
sober, wise and diligent, but wait.

published a reputation abroad, benefit all,
particularly if they are merchants or real
estate owners, thrice the amount yearly of
the sum they pay for their support. Be
sides, every'spirited citizen has a laudable
pride in having a paper of which he is not
ashamed, even tnongn ne snouiu picis it
up in New York or Washington. A good
looking, thriving, live newspaper helps to
sell property, gives character to the lo
cality, and in all respects is a desirable
public convenience. It, from any cause,
the matter in the local or editorial columns
should not be quite up to your standard,
do not cast it aside and pronounce it of no
account, until you are satisfied that there
has been no more labor bestowed upon it
than is paid for. If you want a good read
able sheet, it must be supported. The
loHiAl press is the ' power that moves the
people.'5
29 Some say that it is no use tor them
to advertise, that they have been in the
place in business all their lives, and every
body knows them. Such people seem to
forget to take in consideration that our
country is increasing in population nearly
40 per cent, every tea years, and no mat
ter how old the place may be, Ihere are
constant changes taking place ; some
move to other parts, and strangers fill
their places. In this age of the world. un
less the name of a business firm is kept
constantly before the public, some new
firms may start up, and. by liberally ad
vertising, in a very short time take the
place of the older ones, and the latter rust
out. as it were, and be forgotton. No
man ever lost money by judicious adver
tising.
B exe fits of Advertising. Mr. Parvin,
the extensive advertising agent, -writes :
The necessity of a thorough but judi
cious system of advertising was never so
orcibly impressed upon my mind as it bas
been within the last few weeks, although
have studied advertising closely for
eighteen years. V ith my customers, those
who have advertised largely, and have not
curtailed the amonnt of their advertising
through the stringency ot the money mar
ket, have, to my surprise, paid up in lull
romptly as accounts become due, but not
so with those who have curtailed and ad
vertised sparingly. They find it difhcult
to settle small accounts.
George D. Prentice, the veteran editor
of the Louisville Journal, says, in the same
connection:
We have been carrying on the Louisville
Journal thirty-seven years, and during all
tins time we have known no man oi uusi
ness in the city to fail who advertised lib-
rally. And we have known no one to
ueced in any considerable, if even a re
spectable degree, who didn t advertise
iberailv.
An advertisement in a newspaper is me

scribed. Two considerations, and two
onlv are to be looked to in both cases.
The first has reference to the style of the
sign-bcard or advertisement; for it is de
sirable to have it unique and attractive so
that it may be as conspicuous to the pub
lic eve as possible. The second has refer
ence to its location; shall it be hung out
in a principal thoroughfare or upon a by
way" Thus one enterprising dealer builds
or rents an imposing house upon a crowd
ed street and covers it with decorations
and" gay signs, at great cost. Of course, it
pays him. "lie likewise, following up the
same line of reasoning, advertises exten
sively, which is no less expensive. He se
lects the best location he can witnout re
gard to expenses; he selects the most pop
ular newspaper, lo make money eccord-
mg to ibis principle of business, money
must be speut. Enterprise cannot stop to
count pennies. . .It -has not tne tune to do
so. It can make more by looking after
large gains and leaving the lesser items to
take care of themselves as they will do
when great profits are made. It takes the
prominent avenue of transit, picks the
best house on it, and throws in its adver
tising bill as so nv-ny additional and ne
cessary sign-boards put before the eyes of
the. public, the only difference being that
the public will not Pee the actual sign
board unless it passes by it, while the met
aphorical . sign-board placed in the col
umns of a widely circulated newspaper,
goes after the public, seeks it out, hnnts it
down to its private walks and ways, and
compels it to be observant in spite of itself.
Hence the value which sagacious com-
