A man named Richard Woodcock
"was very badly injured at Cuttingsville,

The press of Albany says the Apollo
Minstrel Troupe of this city, when there,

The Locomotive I. II. Moores, one of
the original stock of the O. C. R. R., was
utterly demolished recently, 500 miles
East of Sacramento, in a collision with No.
7C, on the Central Pacific.
Messrs. Caldwell & Clark, stone ma
sons of this city, have a contract for work
upon the Branch Mint building at Dalles
City. They have also been awarded the
vne masonry on Odd Fellows Hall, in
this place.
We have received the annual report
of the Portland Library Association,
which show truly gratifying results from
the establishment of the Library a lew

Mr. A. li. Hallock, of the Wallamet
'.'Iron Works, called upon us on Monday,
and Mr. Nation. Superintendent, on Tues
day. The Wallamet Iron Works, in our
estimation, can turn out a little the best
castings of any furnace or foundry on the
coast.

HOW THE WORK IS STOPPED.
Reading in the veritable columns of the
Evening Commercial a deplorable account
of the stoppage of work on the East Side
railroad, and that Ben Holladay & Co.
were engaged in discharging hands and
winding up business, we made haste to go
down the road to take leave of our numer
ous friends employed at the mill. So
chartering a conveyance, and securing the
company of a friend, we crossed the Clack
amas and soon found ourselves at Mill
No. 2," astonished to find steam up. teams
hauling and all hands at work making
lumber and stacking it out just as if busi
ness hadn't stopped and all hands hadn't
been discharged! Even at the risk of
writing up an institution which ought
(according to the Commercial) to stop, but
which like the Flying Dutchman " seems
to go after its career is ended." we will
describe this unstoppable and reasonable
mill. It is situated on the edge of a fine
piece of timber, and the lumber is piled
up in the flat, thirty feet below the floor
of the mill. One large engine and boiler
are busy with the main circular saw which
slices tbe 24 feet log3 up into 8 inch flitch
es; as each slice comes off it is grappled
by remorseless irons and lifted to another
carriage where the edging saw cuts it into
widths of railroad ties, these are again
shoved off to a small . saw which makes
"three peices " of the timber, 8 feet long,
and by an arrangement of rollers, these ties
are taken off to be piled up, new piles be
ing started beyond as they reach the level
of the mill. "At the present time, ties
enough are piled out to lay 30 miles of
track and more are being sawed at the
rate of 4 miles a week, so that at the end
of this week 80,000 ties will be ready for
use; making a total of two and a half mil
lion feet of lumber.
Four fine ox teams, of three yoke each,
are constantly employed in hauling logs
to the mill, and the timber is convenient
as possible, and yet they cannot crowd
the log-way. About fifty men are at work
in different capacities, and the mill turns
out a thousand feet of lumber per day for
each man employed, including the cook
and his assistants, and an occasional spy
sent to look at it by the West Side road.
The smaller saws are run by another en
gine of great power, and we call attention
to the fact that the mill averages 50.000
feet of lumber for every 11 hours run.
Everything is kept in splendid order; the
stables are clean and comfortable, and
feed remarkably abundant, so are supplies
and provisions, and if Ben Holladay has
stopped the mill, he fortunately hasn
stopped senaing gruo to it. we were
handsomely entertained by Mr. Sheldon.

at this late day, we sent our friend out as
a scout, and he brought back to our ark,
as an olive branch of peace, the news that
Wm. H. Anderson Superintendent of
construction, with a party of Ilolladay's
discharged'' mercenaries were under
mining some man s land, bo we hitched
our horse to a fence and went to see what
conspiracy our friend William was engaged ,
in. and tound tnat he was laying founda
tions for trestle-work over a ravine, and
completing a deep cut adjoining, by the
aid of the aforesaid party of mercenaries.
Mr. Anderson treated us very well,
showed us the work and insisted upon our
eating some pie we couldn't do that on
account of Ned s" lunch at the mill
but the well done look ot the pastry was
refreshing. Foraging must be good in
that vicinity for the dining tent was walled
with provender. Out of personal regard
for Anderson we didn't show him the
Commercial that told of his "discharge,"
and judging from the looks of the party
and provisions, we doubt if anv of them
knew they had been "discharged" or
were about to be.
We beg to inform our readers that the
railroad work goes bravely on.
The San Francisco Herald of the 10th
says that the receipts of breadstuff from
Oregon and the interior of California, con
tinue large, and notwithstanding the
very liberal exports that have continued,
since J uly last, stocks are yet considerable
in advance of any previous year at a cor
responding date. "And judging from
present indications, we are likely to have
a lull in the shipping demand for both
flour and wheat. Orders from the United
Kingdom are being withdrawn, or pur
chasing limits reduced to an extent that
forbids their execution at current rates of
wheat and freights. The result is inevita
ble ; we will go into another harvest with
a very large surplus which niust necessari
ly act as an incubus upon the value of
the new crop, which to aii human appear
ances pow promises to be at least ope
third greater than any previous harvest.
The market for all kinds of feed. cram.
etc., is depressed and prices easier to the
buyer." Wheat is a good thins: to be an
incubus, but sow on. Farmers : somebodv
will want your wheat, and will be more
willing to pay you aerood price for it than
the bulls and bears of the wheat market.
Farmers who can afford to hold their
grain, may rest assured of getting $1 per
bushel tor it, at nome, some time within
two years.

the crank-axle, which is so arranged that
the ploughs can be driven deeper or shal
lower at the pleasure of the driver, when the
team is moving, by means of the lever.
We also manufacture sulkey plows for
small boys, or infirm persons who are unable
to manage a team of three or four horses.
This gang or sulkey plow, will cut a fur
row from 2 to 10 inches deep.
" The committee who tested the draught
of this plow with a dyuamometer state, that
it ran nt!)ter by 10 pounds,than other plows
when running ai iuC same depth, and held
by the plowman whilo on uJ?t."
