THE BEST THAT I CAN. " I cannot do much," said a little star, ; " To make the dark world bright ! -My silvery beams cannot struggle far, t Throagh the folding gloom of night ! Bat Tm only part of Gof s great plan, And I'll cheerfully do the best that I can !' " What is the use," said a fleecy cloud, " Of these few drops that I hold ? . They will hardly bend the liIyproud, Though caught in her cup of gold! Yet am 1 a part of God's great plan, So my treasures 111 give as well as I can.' A. child went merrily forth to play, But a thought, like a silver thread, Kept winding in aud out all day. Through the happy, golden head ; Mother said, " Darling, do all you can, For you are a part of God's great plan.' " She knew no more than the glancing star, Nor the cloud with its chalice full! How, why, and for what, all strange things were. She was only a child at school ! But thought : "It is part of God's great plan, That even I should do all that I can I" So she helped a younger child along, "When the road was rough to the feet, And she sang from her heart a little song, That we all thought passing sweet ; And her father, a weary, toil worn man. Said, " I too, will do the best that 1 can." Our best ! ah ! children, the best of us, MiiSt hiile our faces away, When the Lord of the vineyard comes to look At our task, at the close of day ! But for strength from above 'tis the Mas ter's plan We'll pray, and we'll do the best that we can. The 3J?thodist. VELOCIPEDES. A New York cotemporary thus speaks and prophesies in regard to velocipedes : From a careful estimate the army of velocipedists wiil have nnmbered by the 1st of May at least 20;000. The laws of progress being irresist ible, the velocipedes will come, best ridden by babies of full growth; they will invade the parks, rush along the toot paths, roll over every patch of Nicolson pavement, they can scent out, despite the blue coats, and take possesion of the city generally. "Oh, very well 1" we fancy we hear the elderly ladies and old gentlemen, with weak nervps. say : "Oh, very well ; but we shall have municipal laws passed prohibiting theirrunning on sidewalks, or on the streets, or in the streets, or in the park, or anywhere (with a scream;) we'll put them down." But you can't do it, ladies and gen tlemen ; they will break through the municipal laws like pie-crust. Who -will makq the arrests, pray ? " The policemen 1" IIow can they 1 Take the politest, liveliest blue bottle you can clutch, and send him after a velocipedist ? Why, the fellow on "wheels would be round fourteen cor Tiers before Buttons had his mind made up ! No, no; there i3 only one wav that we know of for driving out these fiery IInri3, but we fear it will not meet the general approval. The :ure might possibly be set down as even worse than the disease get velocipedes for the police. The number now in the city and jBUburbs is about zou. .five mann jacturers are, at this writing, actually at work, and others are about to be .gin. Those now in operation cannot iineet the demand or even approximate viL In one establishment alone we .read on the order book over fifty orders all received within a few days In another, almost as many were re corded. Those who commenced the manufacture at the outset are en gaged increasing their facilities for production, and by the largest of those it is estimated that within a few days he will be able to turn out fully twenty machines per diem. With these Ggures it will be easily seen that an estimate of 20,000 for first of May, assuming the demand to con tinue, is not an excessive one. Jast as soon as the manufacturers now commencing the business get fairly to work, we may look also for a reduc tion in the price of the velocipedes, .now excessively high. The most in-, ferior machines are readily sold for seventy dollars, the superior ones, jvithout extras or ornamentation of spy kind, for one hundred and twenty. We have no doubt whatever that there has been surreptitious practice 'going on in back yards during the pleasantest days of this mild winter by velocipedists. , josn timings expresses our views on the subject of autographs. precisely. He thus replies to an anx ious correspondent who asked for his autograph: ' We never furnish orto graft in less quantities thin bi the . - i. i . - pamg. it is a Dizmess tnat erate men have got into, but it don't strike ns as being profitable nor amusin fv e furnished a near, a very dear friend our ortograff, a few days ago, fnf Qfi rlfltTO on.'l !f rrr tnt U U ,1 of the banks, and it cost me 8275 tew get it back. We went out of ;the biziness then, and have not hankered for it since.'' . General Sheridan reports tha I the back-bone of the " Indian rebel lion' has been broken the final blow liavirg betn given on Christmas Dav in the destruction of a Camanche viN lage. When we remember how terse and telling were the despatches o piicnaun Uunng tee Southern rehpl lion," we may accept this declaration $s Uie r.aro report of an official fact. official Laws of the United States, PASSED AT TEE THIRD SESSION OF THE FORTIETH CONGRESS.
