"tYHttAUE MOST FICKLE J Some' savage many years ago ven tured to tell the world that women were "carious," " fickle,", that tbey loved romance and delighted in se . crct. Whether they are more liable to change, more inconstant or less firm in opinion and purpose than man, remains to be generally seen. Two points in this article are given to show the resolution of woman, and in one instance at least the capricious ness of man. We quote from the Shasta Courier the first of these, showing how a man DID NOT WANT TO MAURY. We heard a good joke on a resi dent of Dog Creek the other day. The party referred to is a bachelor and lives on the waaon road. A few days ago an emigrant wagon from Oregon came along and camped near our friend's place. The head of the family soon made himself ac quainted with the proprietor of the premise, and asked him why he didn't get a woman to keep house for him. The answer was that he in tended to marry just as soon as a woman who willing to enter into the Jionds of matrimony could be found. The Oregonian remarked that he could find him a partner if he would take her. The bachelor said that was right into his hand, and the em igrant invited him to his camp. The Orcg-onia.il called up a bouncing dam sel of about twenty years, and in formed her that the gentleman ac companying him wS " on the mar ry and willing to take her for better xjr lor wore, The damsel, delighted with the prospect, advanced, and t-eizin: our friend by the hand, as f-ured him that she was "lad to meet him, and was ready to marry him at the drop of a hat, -while the o'd lady hastened np and congratulated her darter" on. her good luck. Sur prised and alarmed at the serious turn matters had taken, our friend, who is constitutionally opposed to the in stitution of matrimony, endeavored to explain by saying he was only joking and did not want to marry. At this the Oregonian became hig'dy indig linnt, and the would-be bride rt ouested her father to take his rifle and " drap the varmint in his tracks.'' At this Affectionate suggestion the bachelor left for his fortifications, the last thing he heard bei.i the voice of the old lady consoling her disappoint ed " darter" with the remark that it was best to u let the bilk go, as he weren't man enough to do her any-s how." - Now to offset the above and it will also be observed that that Ore gon damsel was " willin we quote from the Lowell, Massachusetts, Courier, of Jai.uary IGth, to further prove that when a woman " wills, 6he wills and you may depend upon it. When she wont, she wont, and that's the end on it " the ladv in question WANTED TO MAURY. A young CaliforRian, about 25 years of age, happening East on business, visited Lowell for the pur pose of sight -seeing, slopping at the American House. He seemed a young man of property, wore dia mond rings and costly jewelry, repre senting himself as the owner of a slock f irm and other property in San Jcse, California, and gave Ins name as Jas. Welch. He stated that his partner in business was about returning home from the East with a newly wedded wife, and intimated that but for some disappointment he might have done the same. His story coming to a young lady of 20, employed as a seamstress at the American House, jocosely remarked that inasmuch as &he had been disappointed in a similar manner, the relatives of one to whom she had plighted her faith prevent ing the marriage, her heart beat in sympathy with that of the Culifor nian, and the sorrow of both- miaht be assuaged in matrimony. Her friends, thinking it all a joke, which they would carry no further, arranged an introduction between the two, which took place at the American House on Wednesday morning, they never having spoken to each other before. On the day following (Thurs day), they were married at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, by the Rev. Dr. Edsoii, and three-ouarters of an hour Uter they were on their way to New York. On Saturday last they took the steamer (or San Francisco. The bride wrote to .her friends when in New York that she was well pleased with her choice, and that her hus band and herself hai arranged to visit the East next year. Why Women are Precious. It-Jjas long been known that distance lends enchantment to the view, and on this ground alone some writers have sensibly advised women who wish to be ralued "highly to "make themselves scarce." But the effect of literal scarcity on this article has been first elaborated in 'the West minster Review for- October, w hich shows that women -have more in fluence and higher standing in pro portion as men exceed them in num ber. It gives the following singular illustration if it may bef called such: "At one .time a -woman cou'd hardly walk through-the streets of ban Irancisco without having every one pause to gaze on her, and a child was so rare that once at a theatre in the same city, where a woman had taken her infant, when it began to cry, just as the orchestra began to play, a man in the pit cried out, 'Stop those fiddles and let that baby cry; I haven't heard such a sound in ten years!' The audience applauded this sentiment, the orchestra stopped, and the baby continued its perform ance amid unbounded enthusiasm."
