LIFE LESSC1S.
A little drop of dew had stood
Upon my casement long,
The sun came out and kissed the dew,
And when I turned again to tiew
The dew-drop it was gone.
A tiny blossom, pale and sweet
I'd nursed e'en since its birth,
When last I sought 'twas all in vain,
.For oh ! the bitter winds and rain
Had crushed it to the earth.
A bud of richest promise grew
Within my garden wall.
I gazed npon it, soft and fair,
And hoped 'twould yield a flower rare
Ere autumn leaves might fall.
A beauteous form of infant grace,
I thought to call my own ;
One tender breath upon my cheek,
One sigh of parting love io'speak
My heavenly gift had flown.
Then, as I faint and pow'rless grew
To quaff Life's bitter cup,
An angel form, just overhead.
And bending down in pity said,
" Look up from earth look up !"

It is worth while for ail farmer?,
everywhere, to remember that
thorough culture is better than three
mortgages on their farm.
Ihat an offensive war against
weeds is five times less expensive
than a defensive one.
That hay is a good deal cheaper
EJftdg in the summer than purchased
in the winter.
That a horse that lays his ears
back and looks lightning when any
one approaches him, i3 vicious. Don't
buy him.
That scrimping the feed of fattening
hogs is a waste of grain.
That over-fed fowls won't lay eggs.
That educating children is money
lent at a hundred per cent.
That one evening spent at home in
study is more profitable than ten
lounging about country taverns.
Referring to the action of the
Board of Managers of the State
Agricultural Society at its late ses
sion, the Orcgonian says :
It may be worth while to take a
second look at some of these actions,
and the motives of them. Five thou
sand copic3 of statistical and other
information for distribution amongst
the emigrating population of the At
lantic side. Fifty thousand copies
it'oald be a good investment of money,
and might have been done at this
time if our model legislature would
have aided the society to the amount
of .$1,000, but that was refused. The
action relating to a survey of public
jauus propeny rjciongs to tne Legis
lature, but as lhat body nas domf its
best to insult Congress and our Sena
tors, the society evidently stands the
best chance of success. The artesian
well project is adopted with a view
to settle the question of practicability
of getting water by that means in this
Valley.
To Cure a Cold. Do three things.
First, eat nothing; second, go to bed,
cover up in a warm room; third,
drink as much cold water as you can;
or as you want, or as much heib tea
as you can; and in three cases out of
four, ) ou will be well in thirty-six
hours. To neglect a cold for forty
eight hours after the cough com
mences, is to place yourself beyond
cure, until the cold has run its course,
of about a fortnight. Warmth and
abstinence, are safe and certain cures,
when applied early. Warmth keeps
the pores of the skin open, and re
lieves it of the surplus which op
presses it, while abstinence cuts off
the supply of material tor phlegm
which would otherwise be coughed
up. This is a simple but effectual
remedy. Drink uo intoxicating

Very amusing scenes occur every
now and then in and about a news
paper office. To fully understand
and appreciate the fun of the follow
ing the reader should know that in
every office where a Iloe's press is
used the type i3 " made up" in semi
circular forms: These are known as
" turtles," arc made of cast-iron,
rvnd are of great weight. To keep
the " turtles' in condition it is neces
sary that they be creased each morn
ing with oil, the best being consider
ed necessary. Hie other day lire
stock of oil having been allowed to
be almost exhausted, a bright youth
was sent from the office of the prtss
to a grocery store, and instructed to
buy a bottle of the best olive oil.
The grocer being of an inquiring
turn of mind, the following converse
tion occurred;'
Grocer. '' Well, my son, what
do you want the oil for?"
Boy. ' To grease the backs of
our turtles with, sir.''
Grocer (astonished). " To grease
your turtles?"
Boy. " Yes, sir. We always do
that with them every morning."
The youth It ft the grocer consider
ably mystified as to why the backs
of turtles should be gressed.
On another occasion the same
specimen of young America was sent
to Adams' Express office to ii-qtrrc
if they could forward to 2s ew York
that day a lot of turtle?.
The gentleman in charge as-ked
him how many he had?
Boy. " Eight, fir."
Gentleman. " How much do they
weigh, sonny?"
Boy. ' Well I guess about three
hundred pounds apiece."
Gentlemen. " llow much did vou
sr.y.-'- "
Boy. "Three hundred pounds.''
GeMieman. " Gre;it fortune 1
4re did on get such ho turtles?''
3IOTIIEII IS CHILDISH.
" She is childish!" How thought"
less, how disrespectful, how ignorant
and sinful an expression! What!
that mother whose form is bowed,
whose hair is silvered, whose eyes
are dimmed in watching over you,
whose interest in you baa never
abated, though another calls you his!
Her judgment, believe me, young
friend, is deeper, more matured than
yoare; but because you differ, how
easy it is to say, " Mother is child
ish !" Shame on you ! I know it is
believed by the giddy young that old
folks get childish. The author who
said, "Young folks think old folks are
fools; but old folks know what young
folks are," spoke truth undying. Says
one, "At forty man suspects himself
a fool knows it at fifty.'' I know
that there are many young who are
talented; but they do not get wiser
in age? " The youthful talents of
Webster and Clay,'' says one, " gave
promise of the mighty intellects that
in later years would rule the Senat
Benjamin Franklin was past the
meridian of life when the highest
nobles of France received him as they
"deemed best by those bold spirits
across the ocean who had pledged
their all for freedom, to ask aid of
them." Washington and most all
the leaders in that glorious struggle
were middle-aged or older.
John Quiucy Adams was SI when
he died; yet the younger members of
Congress sought instruction of him.
And let me ask, is it the young
statesmen, whom we now trutt to;
or is it to those whose wisdom is ma
tured bjr experience?
Who can read without deep emo
tion, " Washington's last visit to his
mother?"' What respect and tender
ncfs in h'i3 itUntiou! She was nota
" childish old woman" to the Fa
ther of his Country." In imagina
tion I can see the god-Iikc hero rev
erent and gentle as a child in his
mother's presence. And when, "af
ter fifty years, Fiance's noblest son,
America's benefactor Lafayette, vis
ited cur laud, were any ungrateful to
say: "Childish old mm?"
God forgive you, thoughtless Young
man or young woman, who use such
language to or other who has borne
so patiently with your faults. She
has tried this life, and knows its void
ness, knows there is something more
than present gratification to seek.
She who has heretofore he'd the first
place in your heart has yielded it to
pnother, God and mothers alone
know with what anguish.
Her heart is not hardened because
it gives no sign. She has learned to
endure in silence. II r hopes of life
are fled. Is it any wonder she turns
to her grandchildren for love? Their
innocent prattle is music to her; her
heart receives them, treasures them,
takes pleasure in them. Oh! then,
teach them to love and respect her;
let their innocent hearts cherish
her whom you " Lave no time to hu
mor." It will soothe htr heart-pains at
your neglect, and more calmly and
peacefully will the pass down the
stream of life. The benefit will not
he hers only; your children will learn
lessons of wisdom which you cannot
give which you have not lime or
inclination to teach them. Experi
ence makes us all wiser; she has
raised one. generation, and is now able
to avoid triors which are prevalent
with us all in dealing wilh the little
ones entrusted to our care. God
bless the aged, and give the young
more sense than to thirk that gray
hairs are a sin of childishness.
