BOOIC NOTICES.
The ' Atlantic-' for January contains
an unusual amount of excellent reading.
Almost all it contains is very good. We
have poems by Whittier. Lenell, Bryant,
and Bayard.. Taylor. Higginson gives us
the opening chapters of a new romance.
Dr. Powditcii gives the llrsf of a series of
articles upon consumption' which is
worthy of careful perusal, while Parton.
in his inimitable wi:y. talks to us about the
"Mean Yankee at Home." F.dward
Everett Hale, for whose stories we always
anxiously wait, gratifies the readers of the
present number with an account of the
Good Natured Pendulum." All things
considered, it is the best number we have I
seen for a long time, and our lnend Bacon,
at the Postofliee. has done a good thing in
keeping up the club.
Among The good things which the
last steamer from San Francisco brought.
was i-Our Young Folks'-" for January. If
you do not believe it, just read below
aome of its features for 16V'3 :
1. The Storv of a Bad Bov, by T. B.
Aldrich. It is believed that tiiis story will
b regarded as one ol'tiie lresbest. health-
lest, anu most entertaining stones ever
written for youthful readers, lhe Bad
Boy is not a scapegrace, but an active,
wide-awake bov. whose healthy love of
mischief leads him into many amusing ad
ventures. He is a bad boy only in distinc
tion from those unhealthily yooti bovswho
have hitherto had undue prominence in
our literature.
2. The Biographical Sketches of great
Navigators. Voyagers, and Discoverers.by
James Parton. These sketches will be
valuable not only for their biographical
character, but equally so for the clearness
and emphasis with which they will bring
out numerous important facts in Geog
raphy, and give to them a living interest.
3. The series of articles on practical
matters by Rev. Edward Everett Hale.
The large experience and keen observa
tion of Mr. Hale, joined with his shrewd
sense and skill as a writer.will give special
value and interest to his suggestions on
Talking. Reading. Writing. Traveling,
"Working, and Conduct in Society.
4. The series of seini-seientilic papers by
Mrs. Agassi.. These will treat of subjects
of great interest toail thoughtful young
persons. such as Coal Deposits, the
growth of Coral Islands, the causes anoT
history ot Earthquakes, etc.
o. The articles by J. T. Trowbridge on
several branches of industry, Glass-Making.
Coal-MiuiuK. Ship Building, Watch
Making, etc. Mr. Trowbridge has taken
special paiiH to acquaint himself with all
the interesting processes and curious de
tails of these various pursuits, and his de
scriptions of them will be peculiarly full
and interesting.
C. The .valuable series of papers on
American History by Mr. Bone.
7. The Dialogues by Epes Sargent, and
the Declamations by Elijah Kellogg.
' The Pacific Coast Almanac and
Year Book of Facts" for has been
received. Every man on the coast needs
a copy, and the price i only 50 cts. The
larger part of the space is occupied with
the statistics and lists of civil and military
officers, both State and National, of this
coast. A small space is devoted to the
general Government. It is what one needs
for reference almost daily.
We have received a copy of "Nicks

several years by. onr engiticnien, to whom
we furnish vrntches ns jv.nl of our equip

of them carried on our line, anl we consider
th.-ni good and reliable time keepers. In
deed, I have great satisfaction in saving
your watches s,ivc us less trouble, find have
worn and do wear much longer without re
pairs than any watches wo have ever had in
use on this road. As you are aware we for
merly trusted to those of English manufac

as a class they never kept time as correctly,
nor have they done as good service as yors.

Gentlemen : I have uo hesitation in saying
that I believe the great mf.p-.rity of locomo
tive engineers have found by experience that
Waltliam Watches are the most satisfactorr
of any for their uses. Thev run with the
greatest neenraev nnd steadiness, notwith
standing the rough riding of an engine, and,
as I have never known oue to wear out, they
must be durable. 1 hope to see th? time
when railway companies will generally
adopt your watches, and furnish them to all
evigmeers and conductors. In inv opinion
it would greatly tend to promote regularity
and safety.
Yours respectfully.
