A bell has been placed in the
belfry .of the Woolen factory in this
city, to serve as an alarm bell for fires.
Oar citizens have twice recently had
alarms, but slight damage resulted in
either ea-e, and the bell was not.

We have been requested to say
that there will be a Christmas Tree
at the M. E. Church on Christmas
eve 24th, upon which citizens gener

Mrs. C. W. Pope, and Rev. Mr.
Todd have been appoiuted a com
inittee to receive the presents, and
generally superintend the matter of
arranging them upon the tree. The

Refering to the trail of a Pfeil
p!ow in Jackson county, th6 Beville
fays : The plow was set 6 inches deep
arid drawn by two light horses, and
worked easy and regularly. AH who
witnessed the trial were greatly
pleased with the result. It was pro
ven that one man and two horses
with a Pfeil plow, could break more
ground in a day, than two men and
four horses, with common plows.
As mnny as 25 plows have been sold
in Jackson county and other orders
arc coining in rapidly. We call at
Mention to this plow, that farmers
may examine it, and profit by its use.''

-The Herald learns that the
Wallamet Lock Company have sub
scribed a capital stock of $300,000,
in addition to the subsidy granted by
the State, to construct a canal and
locks at Liuu City. $60,000 of the
stock has been assessed for immedi
ate payment, and the work will com
mence early in the spring. it savs:
this is the greatest improFement in
Oregon the present railroad schemes
excepted. The benefits will be al
most incalculable ; saving an immense
amount of water in transportation,
cheapen freights and facilitate trans
portation by river steamers, which
will hold in check railroad imposi
tion and secure our farmers and pro
ducers an open outlet for all their
produce at living rates.
We yesterday made the ac
quaintance of Mr. J. W. Lewis, of
Oregon City. Mr. L-. is now sole
proprietor of iho shops for manufac
turing agricultural implements, of
that place, and proposes to make
anything in that line which farmers
use. The Pfeil Gang Plow has,
of late, found a ready sale, he having
shipped a large number to all parts
of the State. IJe will manufacture
the Web-foot, with sower attached,
ork coming from his hands has
never failed, as many farmers c&u
bear witness. Commercial.
Messrs. J. F. Miller & Co., have
not only recently doubled the dimen
sions of their popular IJotel the

their boot and shoe establishment, on
Main street, making it as neat and
trim as a new hat. These gentlemen

The First American Newspaper Print
el on the Pacific Coast.
A correspondent of the San
Francisco JUfxaminer, states the fol
lowing :
" Whatever others may say to the
contrary, we assert that the honor of
publishing the first newspaper in the
English language on the Pacific
Coast belongs to llobert Semple.
The first issue was printed on the
"Rarnage Press," so called, and
which had been previously used for
the publication of official documents
when this country was under Mexican
rule. It has only beeu a week or
two since we had in our hands a
printed copy of the first number
issned by Doctor Semple, and we
looked on it as a great curiosity. It
bore the date of some day in July,
1846, and its dimensions were pre
cisely those of a half sheet of ordina
ry letter paper, and printed only on
one side at that. I t simply contained
a proclamation of James K. Polk,
then President of the United States,
Semple's prospectus, and a brief par
agraph stating, though the paper was
small that it would be enlarged when
new materials could be obtained.
It was published at Monterey. At
a subsequent period Semple moved
his publication office to Sin Francisco;
but we shall speak of the Press at an
early day in the now great commer
cial Metropolis of California, at some
other time."
We dislike to have onr statements
disputed, bat when we make an er
ror we take great pleasure in correct
ing it, when shown to us. We have
often asserted that " the honor of
publishing the first newspaper in the
English language on the Pacific
Coast," be'ongs to Mr. John Flem
ing, of this city, "Whatever others
may say to the contrary, it is never
theless a fact, that the publication of
the Oregon Spectator, was commenc
ed in this city in February 1846,
some five months at least, before the
issue of Dr. Sempies' paper at Mot-
terey. The Spectator was printed
upon one of Hoe's Washington
Presses, aud its size was nearly half
that of the Enterprise. The press,
type, ink, paper, etc., was brought
out from New York upon the order
of George Abnernethy Eq., the first
American Governor on this coast,
than Governor of Oregon. The
same vessel brought the news that
General Jackson was dead, and that
the " 54 40' or fight" boundary
question between the American and
English governments bad been set
tled. We thus contest the claim
set up by the Examiner, and demand
that the Pioneer Society make the
proper record of the fact.
Tub WeatiIer. Those who have
beeu yearning for rain were fully sat
isfied, no doubt, with the showers
which deluged " all creation" last
Wednesday evening. After pouring
down heavily for several hours, the
next day the skies cleared aud Luna
again "reigned supreme." Saturday
last was a fair day. A portion of
both Sunday and Monday it rained
Tuesday was a regular Web-Foot
Winter day. Wednesday fair with
heavy rain in the night time. Thurs
day delightful bright sunshine most
of the day. Friday, decidedly "mist."
Com. John Paty is dead hav
ing expired at Honolulu on the 11th
ult., at the age of 01.

nament to the city, aud of great credit to
their enterprise. They are in constant re
cipt, from the East and their own shops, of
all the iatet and most fashionable styles, and
their prices are always moderate and satis
factory. Every article warranted as repre
sented. Saddlery. J. 11. Schram, of this
City, is now manufacturing the best Saddlery
and Harness in the State. He will have at
least 50 sets of alt grades, from fine to com
mon, finished and ready for sale next month,
and more than that number of Saddles. He
is bou.id 4o mr.ke a trade with any man who
Wishes o buy of him. He uses both Oregon
and California leather in his establishment,
and his work tears a most excellent reputation
abroad. We hope that citizens of our own
county will think of phis, when they want any
articles in his tine.

and will be glad to hear that he was in Ore
gon Cjtr only a few days ago when he lelt
an immense budget of toys, for little girls
and boys, or older persons if they desire them.

tive engineers have found by experience that
