Formerly naich of agricultural instruction
vas committed o rhyme, that it might be
more easily remembered. Dr. Franklin
published a great many in his Poor Bich
nrds Almanac, and w give a few gathered
from various sources :
If bntteiGthurned in morning air
Is kept in a cokI place with care,
The tnste is nice ;
But that which shows the buttermilk
O Dou't sell to those who dress in silk
For any price.
To be in debt
Brings out the sweat,
No half-cooked meat
Is tit to 'eat.
A woman v;ho sneezes
Ought not to jpake cheeses ;
Put her hands in a naifl,
Or ever take snuff.
"When the wind is east and turkeys gobble,
It is no time a horse to hobble ;
But letiim range to catch the breeze
Should he be troubled with the heaves.
An ox with broad horns and short glossy
hair.
Is good for a team, the market, or fair.
One white foot is bad, and two are too many,
That horse is best that does not have any.
A farmer without hogs,
But an arm of dogs,
Will have more puppies than pork;
For the swill will be lost,
To the husbandman's cost
Dogs good for nothing to work,
The slackest farmer, strange to say,
Is knoWn for being out ot hay.
It dow not par in any way,
To milk a cow three times a day.
. When chickens roost above the mow,
It spoils the hay for horse or cow.
The well-bred daughter for a farmer,
APpt r.dent helpmeet and a charmer.
If is no pace to set poles,
Where moles or mice have dug their holes.
Cobs make no for food kme to eat,
But they are good for smoking meat.
Pork and beans make muscles strong
Something farmers seek ;
It is a dish to make life long,
When cooked bnt once a week.
Ajslovenly dress, a shabby pate,
The fences down, a broken plate,
Tigs in the garden, weeds Vtry hi-h,
"Children uuwashed no bacon to fry
Lots of great dogs and yawling torn cats,
Windows repaired with a dozen old huts,
An empty barn not a spear of hay,
Cinvs in the clover, horse run away,
Things sold hy guess without being weighed,
Bills coming in and taxes unpaid
Pipes and tobacco whisky neglect,
IV.ig iu their train as all might expect,
jUI sorts of trouble to fret away life "
l?at worst of the whole, n unhappy wife.
Many estates are lost in the getting,
tun cc men have for.-aken hewing and split
in g
And women their knitting and sewing.
A mackerel sky
The wind will be high.
Then bring in thegruin,
? - CJose by there is raiu.
A smoky chimney may be cured,
A scolding woman not endured,
A farmer's wife, like cream or curd
Is to be seen but seldom heard.
Bare-fooled girls,
With iloating cvnls,
About the gate .
Though quite content,
- Aio no ornament
To the estate .
If you would thrive,
o Be up by five ;
For there is health,
And certain wealth,
When at the plow,
Or milking cow.
A fanner at home should be found,
And often looking at his grouud
Inspecting fields, repairing fence
For dollars come by saving pence.
Clear the soil from moles and slugs,
Prime the trees keep oil' the bugs,
Then fruits and melons, rich and fair
Will recompense for all your care.
Buttabaga, carrots, and beets.
Improve the character of meats ;
They make good beef, and quicker too,
Than any other feed will do.
At the farmer's cost
Is an early frost,
Exercise reason
Harvest in season
Of all the crops a farmer raises,
Or capital employs,
Brings back such comforts and such praises,
Is a crop of girls and boys.
Farmers' Clubs. We seriously
believe one of the. best means of im
proving agriculture in any farming
community, is the forrr.ation of and
properly conducting a farmers' club.
And just now is an appropriate time
for commencing the work. Will not
you who read this, supposing you to
be a farmer, call the attention often
or twenty of your neighbor f-rmers
to this subject, have a meeting ap
pointed at your house, or at the school
house, or any suitable place, and at
this meeting organize a club? Don't
have much formality. A simple con
stitution is sufficient. This was once
recommended : " We agree to meet
once a week to talk over our farming
affairs." It will be well, however, to
have a name, elect a president and
secretary, and appoint a regular time
and place for the meetings. Where
the club is small, it is well to meet
at the residence of the memlers, whcn
time allows, during the day, so as to
examine the practice of each. Select
some practical question, appoint some
one to open the discussion, either iu
witting or orally, and let each mem
ber give his views on the subject.
Discourage fine speeches, or essays,
3 and encourage practical talks. Let
the secretary briefly record tbe views
f the talkers for future reference.
Jt wilt give your club importance,
please the members, and benefit other
farmers if those reports are published,
and every sensible county paper
will be glad to receive brief reports
of useful discussions. Such a club
will awaken interest, and incite read
ing and reflection, and bring out
much practical and valuable informa
tion. No one farmer knows so much
about any branch of h;s business that
ha cannot learn something from
others. The social effects of frequent
meetings of neighbors will also be
good0 Try tbe experiment in your
uyghborhood this season, and let us
hear from you for our columns

The Sabbath for the Working
Jan The Sabbath is God's special
preseut to the working man, and cne
of its chief objects is to prolong his
life and preserve efficient his woi king
tone. In the vital system it nets like
a compensation-pond ; it replenishes
the spirit, the elasticity and vigor
which the last six days have drained
away, and supplies the force which is
to fill the six days succeeding ; and
in. the economy of existence, it ans
wers the same purpose as, in the econ
omy of income, is answered by a sav
ings bank. The frugal man who puts
aside a pound to day, and another
pound next month, and who, in a
quiet way, is always putting by his
stated pound from time to time, when
he gets old and frail, gets not only
the same pounds back again, but a
good ninny pounds besides. And the
conscientious man, who husbands one
day of his existence every week, who,
instead of allowing the Sabbath to be
trampled and torn in the hurry and
scramble of life, treasures it devout
ly up the Lord of the Sabbath
keeps it back with usury. The sav
ings bank of human existence is the
weekly Sabbath.
Guard Against V cloak Lan
guage. There is as much connection
between the words and thoughts as
there is between the thoughts and ac
tions. The latter is not only the ex
pression of the former, but they have
a power to react upon the soul, and
leave a stain of corruption there. A
young man who a'lows himself to use
one vulgar or profane word, has riot
only shown that there is a foul spot
upon his mind, but by the utterance
of that word he extends that spot
and infhmes it, til!, by indulgence, it
will pollute and ruin the whole
soul. He careful of your words as of
your thoughts. If you can control
the tongue that no improper words
are pronounced by it, you will soon
be able to control the mind, and save
that from corruption. You extin
guish the fire by smothering it, or by
preventing bad thoughts bursting into
language. Never utter a word any
where which you wculd be ashamed
to speak in the presence of ladies or
of the most religious man. Try this
practice a little while, and you vjill
soon have command of yourself.

Kixg's Cox Mot. Lord Kenyon
had a most ungovernable temper,
which was r.ot always restrained, even
in the presence of royalty. On one
occasion he had fallen into a violent
passion before King George 111., and
had spoken sharp and bitter words
unseemly for a king to hear. The
courtiers were expecting a pungent
rebuke from the King, but he con
veyed a more effective reproof by a
witty bon mot. As soon as Lord
Kenyon recovered himself he made
an humble apology, saying he re
gretted lie had lost his temper.
(i You needn't regret it," was the
prompt reply of the King ; "I con
gratulate you on the Iosp, and hope
you will find a better cne."
Lord Kenyon was overwhelmed
With shame, and the courtiers never
allowed him to forget the joke at his
expense.
Col. Warren, of the California
Farmer, suggests that the World's
Fair in 1870 should be held on this
coast. We admire the Colonel's en
thusiasm, but think he is a little too
fast, even for California. However,
we are tending that way, for the
Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows will
meet in San Francisco next year.
The California Farmer says that
the people of that State are seriously
beginning to realize the unsoundness
of their foundations for earthquakes,
and they must lay aside all the fancy
ornaments upon the tops of buildings,
which have already caused more loss
of life than by any other cause.
Population will stream in upon
us and ere long wc can so perfect our
system of internal improvements that
we will be able to compete with the
world in any branch of icdustry.

CHANGE OF NAME !
WERCADO & COMPANY,
Suctexnor to
MERC A DO k SEULLY,
Have been obliged, for their
own protection and the safety
of the public, to change the
name of their celebrated Bit
ters to
Mercadd's Native
California Wine Bitters.
TO. We subjoin the following affidavit in an
injunction suit formerly pending between Mer-
cado & Seully plaintiffs, and G. A. Simon, de
fendant, P. Sainsevain, be duly sworn, says :
"That the article knotcn as Sainseraiii

by "Slercfdo 4" Saelhj. afoiit month of March
101, iciihotit the said Sainsevain Brothtr
Jtaviita any concern in the manufacture thtre
of. Tfiat drpunent has ulway kiwtru and
considered saiA JHcreado Seully as the fVu
Proprietors of the Suimevains California
IVine Bittern ."
Notwithstanding the above affidavit the
said P. Sainsevaine is putting up a compound
under the name of Sainsevain'a Wine Bitters,
representing it to be the same as our eelebrat
ed Bitters, which we have been manufactur
ing and selling in immense quantities since
1800, and also affixing a neatly similar label
to that used on our genuine Wine Bitters I
Be not Diceived. Send for lilrrcatlo't
Native California Wine Bitters f
And you will obtain the same popular hever-.
age so favorably known since 1S00. Beware,
ot Counterfeits. Purchasers of our Wine Bit
ters are requested to oWrve the familiar old
yellow label, and see that the words Hf rcadu.
4 .S idly, Sai Franci, are engraved on the
Government stamp, pasted over the coik of
each bottle. This is the only effectual security
against the counterfeit imitations.
