Mr. John M. Hacui has purchased the interest of Mr. John Fleming, and i. now doing business at the Pot ofneo. The retiring gentlc jim i- one of the enriier-t, settlers of Ore gon City. Mr. Fleming is known As ths pioneer Oraftsnlan among 1'ri liters of our t iie. Many years ago lie published th; tt :! ifar in this city, bringing the material here in a canoe, if we mistake not. Ever Miiiv he has been in active business pur suits, and we are happy to say retires from trade with an abundance of this world's goods to make his declining years pleas ant. Mr. J. M. Bacon-, bis success r-, is also an old time le.-iideni of Oregon, well known as a gentleman of unimpeachable integrity, and correct business habits, lie u:-t fur several years past held responsible ii'iblie positions, and has been faithful in di-charge of his official duties, a hri-t of warm friends who wish He him r sible success:. -ty . Our attention has been called to fact that a better road ought to be fia: eoiHtnioted up the bluff at this city, at l -.ist one hundred times per annum, since we c.uiie here, but we have rarely spoke "f it. through the paper. Now we are sat islwd that public sentiment is lipe t o-agitation upon the subject, and we pro p'.'e to begin. If it is left un til the liailroad is completed it will be a liWi ult thing to do. but at this particular .I'.ineture it is very easy of accomplishment. H'ork done upon the Uailro-.d shows that it would not be a very hard job' to build ' and blast out. a f0 foot street at the 1'! ice indicated, if taken hold of now. In t!i s nutter both hy and County should become interested parties as it will be of great importance to both. As soon as the ctrs are running it will be unsafe for te.mii to travel tiu old road, and a thor-ou-hfare over the bluff will bo indispens able. We shall refer to the subject again l.'-xt week. In the meantime we hope to see some enterprising citizens takx; the 'jn.'sHoa into consideration, and make suit able representation to the City Council and County Commissioners. Lost Riveu. The natural peculiarities of this State hive been the sub ject of many ".aboi-ed urticles, and will for years to como attract the attention of wise men. The Cascades of the Columbia, the Dalles, the J .ikes in thv desert, and upon the summit "t oar mountains, the wonderful lake of Jackson county, etc., etc.. all afford food for the Indent ot nature. We have of hue had our attention directed, more than casually, to that region of Oregon south of this and east of the Cascade range, west of the ldue Mountains. bordering upon Cali fornia. We have, come to beleive that it js almost as fertile a plain as the Wallamet, wlueh is the best body of land west of the Uocky Mountains, beyond all doubt; ami ".vo beleive that the real diamond of the Peseif' maybe there found. Ve have this week boon interested in a conver sation upon south eastern Oregon with Mr. John Mehlrum of this city, who has just returned from a summer's 'expe dition in the capacity -of Government le nartmont Surveyor, under Hon. Plate Glass Fkoxts. The contrast be tween a business building with a plate glass front, and one such, as we hate gen erally seen in Oregon nntil the present season, is remarkably striking. Portland is indebted to Mr. John Xestor for intro ducing the plate glass style of architect ure into that city just at a time w hen it was most needed, as the costly structures of this year attest. Salem, through the same influence, has modernized the ap pearance of her business fronts to an amazing degree but there is room for the contrast to be made in Salem, on houses put up A. D. LStiS. The dingy fronts of a brick block on Commercial street, iust nn- positc and below Moores' block, and still farther down, are in strange contrast to the fronts of a few plainer buildings on the street leading past the Capital Hotel. How any man of taste, having money to expend in buildings, can put tip with iron shutters any longer, is a mystery to us. We hope that no new buildings in Oregon City will ever be made to resemble tbe old style. Mr. Geo. Marshall, of Cane mab. has just had completed, on the cor ner of First and Maiu streets. In this city a frame building about 2ox0. one story only, which, having a plate glass front sets all other fronts in the city at a dis count. Piute glass for buildings is im ported from Europe. No manufactory exists in the United States, and the trade has assumed immense proportions since 1819. Glass is also being extensively used now in slabs for flooring, and side walks even, combining as it does greater strength than the ordinary York flag re cently and for years in use, with the addi tional advantage of conveying light. About twenty-five years ago a supply of" such slabs was required for the purpose of flooring a palace of one of the native Princes of India, but the excise restrictions then prevailing precluded its supply from England at less than thirty shillings per foot; it could now be afforded at three shillings to four shillings. The successful application of glass also to the sheathiu; of iron ships, as recently tested in fb lioyal Navy, and the consequent freedom from the incrustation inseparable from both both wood and iron, indicates a new and important opening in the farther pro gress ot the trade. In fact, its true posi tion has yet to be attained, when the re sources of this country have stimulated that more full development of which it is susceptible, and Great Britain shall, as the author of the freedom of this industry pre dicted, " supply the whole world." Eight Hocks. While the recent enact ment of Congress that government em ployees should work eight hours per day instead of ten has gone into active opera tion there is no uniformity in the construc tion placed upon the law, as regards pay. by government agents; and where the pay has been reduced in proportion to the re duction of time, intense disgust has been created. In places where the pay has not been reduced, laborers have been anxious to work the other two hours for increased pay but have not been permitted, the very pertinent and proper reply being made to them that Congress probably enacted the law upon representations ot" labor associ ations, that eight hours per day was as much m any man ought to work, that he could do as much in eight hours on an av erage as in ten. and that to pay increased wages for ten hours would demolish the principal of the movement entirely. In some cases, when government work is ur gent, two gangs of men are employed, one working from 4 o'clock a. m. till noon, and the other from noon till 8 r. m. It wiil e 1 tng be evident to the most obtuse that the whole eight-hour movement is nn effort to compel increased pay for work; that is. to make that a matter of compul sion Which should always be a matter of compact. The only query ir, that mechan ics who clamored for the enactment af the eight hour law could not see these " beau ties '' beforehand. '3- Newspapers, by en'.mireitisf tire value of property in their neighborhood. and giving the locality in vhieh they are published a reputation abroad, benefit all. particularly it they are merchants or real estate owners, thrice the amount yearly of the sum thev pay for their support. Ie- ides. every spirited citizen has a laudable pride in having a paper of which he is not ashamed, even though he should pick it up in New York or Washington. A good- looking, thriving, live newspaper helps to sell property, gives character to the lo cality, and in all respects u a desirable public convenience. If, from any cause, the matter in the local or editorial columns should not be quite up to your standard, do not cast it aside and pronounce it of no iceonnt, until you arc satisfied that there has been no more labor bestowed upon it than is paid for. If you want a good read able sheet, it must be supported. The local press is the power that moves the people.-5 - j?S3 There is in the show window of the office of Messrs. Fuller & Ferry, Portland, a collection of coins which for variety sur passes anything we have ever seen. It consists of the coinage of all denominations in the different mints of the United States, and of almost every other country on the globe. Some of the specimens are very old. as shown by their dates. One is sup posed to have been made prior to the year 1400. as it bears- no date, find coins were not dated before that time. Several learned 'gentlemen have examined this specimen, but none so far have been able to translate the inscription which it bears. There is also a fine collection ot medals, silver and gold, also displayed, and a metal plate on which is engraved the Declaration of Independence. The entire collection is worth examining. JUS" Our attention has been directed to the loss which is sustained by taking mu tilated currency at its face value. It does not seem to be generally known that mutilated legal tenders lose in Value ac cording to tlie size of the part torn off or destroyed. Thus a $50 greenback, with a fifth of it torn off. would only bring $40, and, is consequently worth no more. We direct public attention to this matter, that those receiving torn bills may not lose by taking them at their face. JZ'J- The raius which have so far fallen fim tall in Oregon do not seem to affect the river greatly. FirrsnrRG May 10, 1SC6. Messrs. Hostetter A Smith Gentlemen: During a v'-sit in the West last Fall. I con tracted chills and fever, which brought me to my bed, and finally terminated in typhoid fever, and confined me to my room for sev eral months, during which time I was so prostrated that I almost despaired of ever recovering health; having entirely lost my appetite, for days not being able to eat a morsel ", added to which I was much dis tressed with a reeling sensation in my head, and passed many sleepless nights all from debility caused by my prostrate condition, brought about by the fever. At this stage of my condition a friend recommended me to ue your celebrated Stomach Litters ; but being morally opposed to the use of stimu lants in any form, I at first declined, but afterwards yielded my prejudices, and after the medicine for several weeks as directed, my appetite returned, and with it I am rap idly regaining my former strength and vigor. My sleep (from the loss of which I had suffered much ) has never been better than it is now, and the reeling sensation (bciire alluded to) has entirely left me. My bowels, which were much constipated anj irregular, arne now quite natural, and, in f.ict, I am glad to say that I feel myself a new man, and tender you this testimonial of my appreciation, iu order that othrs suffer ing as I have may avail themselves of its virtues; which prejudice prevented me from enjoying for so long a period. I may also add tnatmy physician, utter seeing the ben eficial eflcct 3our litter3 had, recommend that I use them regularly. Yours respectfully, E. BORNE, 43 Market street. PiTTsnrRo, Sept. 4, 10'".
