Thanksgiving. It is a fortunate circum
stance that our annual thank-offering fes
tival ha3 become a national affair in which
a whole people participate upon a com
mon day. " This community of thanksgiv
ing.is due to the war, and shows how firm
ly that struggle has bound together the
different sections of our country. We for
get that we are States, and come to offer
tribute to God in our capacity asa nation.
The festival thus becomes more significant
not only in its altered character, but in its
larger suggestions and motives.
The Thanksgiving festival originated in
New. England, and has been called the
il New England Christmas' Like many
other Furitan ideas, it has been communi
cated to other States until it has become
national. It must not be inferred, how
ever, that the world waited for the Puri
tans to teach it the propriety of public
thanksgiving to God for His bounty. All
the ancient religions recognized the most
intimate connection of the Divinity with
human affairs. Apparently this recogni
tion of Providence was more manifest in
ancient than in modern times. The tend
ency of the human intellect, as its devel
opernent progresses, is to interpose cer
certain abstractions which it terms laws
between God and the events of nature or
of our own life. The ancients were cer
tainly more religious than we are. But it
must also be remembered that they had a
darker theology one of fear rather than
of love. The dynasty of gods which Chris
tianity dethroned was a terrible dynasty
one which frowned upon mankind, a dark,
relentless Fate, to be appeased rather than
loved. Indeed, in heathen theology we
can easily detect a sentiment toward the
Deity nearly akin to hatred. Even in the
progress of Christianity 'we can trace a
change forever going on which transforms
the divine aspect, giving it a brighter
character. The God of the nineteenth
century is not the God of the sixleenth.
And this transformation of human theolo
gy is continually going on; so that, not
withstanding the abstractions of science,
we are ever growing up to a more perfect
idea of a divine Being, who is not arrayed
against humanity, but with whom men co
operate in the great mission of this world.
We can trace the results of this change
of theological ideas, in the history of our
Thanksgiving festival. This festival orig
inated upon some special occasion of grat
itude for an uncommon harvest in New
England, following upon a season of
uearui, over two hundred years ago. At
first it was a formal affair, but upon its
repetition, year after year, it became at
length a festival of the family ns well as of
the State. Its formality and its severer
features disappeared, and it became in
New England what Christmas was in the
rest of the world. The Thanksgiving din
ner of the old time, under strictly Puritan
auspices; and the Thanksglving'dinner of
our own day differ materially. The bright
er and more cheerful elements of the mod
ern festival are apparent everywhere,
while the religious sentiment still remains,
though taking a less austere and formal
phase. It is because of this change that
the old Puritan custom has been adopted
by the Middle and Southern States, and
has become American.
This festival differs from the Protestant
Christmas in that it is public as well as
private. It is celebrated first in the church
service where its public significance is
more prominent and afterward at home
about the generously-laden table. This
private celebration, in the Thanksgiving
dinner, is the most attractive feature of
the occasion. It is not the costly dinner
that gives it its chief attraction, but the
opportunity thus afforded for the social
mingling of family relatives and nearest
friends. The occasion is always full of
solemnity us well as rejoicing, not only
because of the religious element which
always to a greater or less degree must
enter into it, but also on account of the
profound nature of those sympathies which
bind to our hearts those who an; near and
dear to ns. Peculiarly solemn is it when our
joy in the presence of friends is mingled
with sorrowful longings for a face which a
yeai; ago was with us but is now hidden
ironi us m tins world forever!
Not the least pleasant feature of this
occasion is the opportunity which it gives
us to remember and minister to the wants
of the poor. Tin; rich man who sits down
to his Thanksgiving dinner, and who can
think of no home made brighter by his
love-o;ferings on that day, can truly make
no thank-offering to God who. is the com
mon Father of all men. Our Thanksgiv
ing sermon to all our readers is : Thank
God for his good dealings toward you. and
try to" feel that you are doing his work in
this world as far as you can, forgive all
your enemic-3 as you hope to be forgiven ;
remember the widows and orphans ; and
then sit down with your friends to the best
Thanksgiving dinner which you can afford
to enjoy.
jZ-ff By a private letter from Waconda,
dated on the 10th. we learn that the grad
ers on the railroad between Aurora and
Lake LaBish will reach the latter. place by
to-night. On French Prairie they have
nici with unprecedented success. On the
1 ith, with 11!) men, (3,300 feet about one
and a fifth miles were graded. We
defy the Union or Central Pacific Com
pany to beat that. On Monday this party
will return to Aurora, and finish up, com
ing along this way, to meet the party now
at work above us and if the weather
permits, the whole entire line from Port
land to a camp ten miles south of Salem
will be speedily finished. The contractors
have purchased another belt of fine timber
in this county, and will soon have the
third steam saw mill in operation.
. - . J o
ire-Mr. A. P. Woodard, late of the
Salem mills, called upon us on Sunday
last, en route to Salem. We were gratified
to hear Mr. Woodard talk of putting up a
large steam flouring mill at Portland, with
an elevator attached. This will surely
prove one of the very best investments in
the State. We learn that the original
movement in this direction was made by
- dr. H. McKay, while here recently as the
l'nSL Wl" he about SloO.UOO. Mr. H ood
ant will be pleased to consult friends of
i.ie project. The mill will be first class in

Weekly Commercial Review.
. Exterpbise Office,
Oregon City, Nov. 20, 1SG3. (
; .As we have before said the prospect
for a rise in the price, of grain this season,
is doubtful, although the. .San. Francisco
Bulletin thinks that when we bear of a
change in European markets: .it will be
favorahle. The Commercial Herald of San
Francisco says, and the Farmer endorses,
the following :
If wheat producers had sold in July,
they could have reaJized from $1 95 to $2
per cental, instead of being now compelled
to sell at $1 75 to $1 80. Advices from
the East proclaim a depressed corn mar
ket in New York and other Atlantic ports,
while the wheat trade of Chicago is repre
sented as being nearly at a " stand still."
Large amounts of grain are stored in our
capacious ns warehouses in many parts of
tne fctate. Ihe rainy season is already
upon us, and our narbor is lull ot unem
ployed shipping. A great many, prob
ably a dozen vessels of the largest capaci
ty which came here expressly for wheat,
nave been compelled to accept charters
lor guano, dye woods, and other articles
ironi other ports. A score more are now
waiting grain charters, with little pros
pect of having them filled at rates that
will pay. Oregon is plethoric with brea,d
stuffs, and there is every prospect that we
shall have a large surplus left over for
next vear. These are some of the results
attained from holding over for extreme
prices, instead of following the market.
We desire farmers to keep these facts in
mind, and disabuse themselves of the ne
farious idea, that metropolitan commercial
journals are stimulated by any other than
an earnest desire to benefit the agricul
tural community, upon which rests much
of the prosperity of the whole State. It
would, indeed, be a very short sighted
policy to strangle one of our leading in
terests, upon which we depend for subsis
tence, in order to pamper another, which
is itself the creature of the farmer's in
dustry. Tne price of wheat in this Valley has fal
len to about 5055 cents average. The
cause for this is in a great measure owing
to the withdrawal of the opposition steamer
line between San Francisco and Panama.
Flour which has ben sent from San
Francisco to New York at $1 00 1 bbl; will
now be charged $3 00 coin.
All the mills of Oregon have a full
supply of wheat. Some of these have
paid more for their grain than they are
now able to stand, as the price of flour
must depreciate, with the reduced price
for grain leaving a large balance against
them, but in favor of the farmer w ho sold
his crops early, in preference to waiting
for an adrance.
We hare observed almost universally,
that when' buyers of wheat advocate the
prospect of an advance on grain in times
such as we have witnessed this autumn,
they, themselves, have a stock on hand
which they are quietly disposing of and
after they have sold or milled their grain
there is an unfavorable change in the
market for the producer who has all this
time been hoodwinked into "holding on
for an advance'' until Mr. Jobber sold
out, leaving the latter a clear field so long
as he desired it.
Oregon oats are yet in demand in Cali
fornia for s-biproent. The fruit trade is
beginning to improve. Good apples and
pears are scarce in California markets.
The former retails at from $1 00 to $2 50
per box the latter from $5 00 to S8 00.
A cargo of 500 kegs of butter is now
en route from New York by the Isthmus.
It is not strange that New York Dairymen
cau make money by shipping their pro.
ducts to this coast, when we can scarcely
find enough butter in oiir home markets
for table use.

About one year ago there
was a great deal being said in this paper
and others, concerning the cost of living
here and in the Atlantic States. The differ
ence is usually in favor of this coast, we be
lieve, when people exercise their judgment
with respect to their expenses. Such per
sons, for instance, as those who have good
taste for drvss gentlemen who care to look
neat, and yet be economical ladies whose
appearance in the latest style of goods is
absolutely indispensable and the poorer

i . Pittsburg May 10, 1S65.
Messrs. Hostetter fe Smith Gentlemen :;
During a v'sit in the West last Fall. I con
tracted chills and fever, which . brought ma
to my bed, and finally terminated in typhoid"
fever, and confined me to my room for oeT
eral months, during which time I was so
prostrated that' I almost despaired of ever
recovering health; h'avfng entirely lost my
appetite, for days not being able to eaf a
morsel added to which I was much dis
tressed with a reeling sensation in my heatf,
and passed many sleepless nights all from
debility, caused by my prostrate condition,
brought' about by the fever. At this stage
of my condition a frien J recommended me
to use your relebrated Stomach Bitters ; but
being morally opposed to the use of stimu
lants in any form, T, at first -declined", but
afterwards yielded my prejudices, and after
the medicine for several weeks as directed;
my appetite returned, and with it I am rap
idly regaining my former strength and
vigor. My sleep (from the loss of which I
had suffered much; has never been better
than it is now, and the reefing sensation
(befire alluded to) has entirely left me.. My
bowels, vhich were much constipated , anil
irregular, arn4 now quite natural, and, in
fact, I am triad to sav that I feel mvself a
new man, and tender you this testimonial of
my appreciation, m order that others suffer
ing as I have may avail themselves" of its
virtues, which prejudice prevented me from
enjoying for so , long a period. I may also
add Vaxt my physician," after seeing the ben
eficial efiect your Bitters had, recommend
that I use them regularly;
