The fact that "Weinie's" comfort
was at stake wars the cause of four
people driving to Portland and back,
most of the way over the Columbia
River highway, last Sunday.
" 'Weinie," it might be said, is the
feline pride and Joy of the family of
Judge 'George C. Blakeley, a grey
creature who has so won himself info
the hearts of the members of the
household that his comfort was the
first thing thought of when they
planned to be out of the city for a
few days.
So "Welnie" was shoved in a box
with three slats over the top, and put
in the bottom of a 'Dodge 'Brothers
sedan for what was expected would
be a fairly rough trip over the river

LOCATING PARTIES' READY TO
8TART IF VOTER8 DECIDE
FOR NEW HIGHWAY.
I
Engineers in the lobal state high
way office have been marking time
during the last several weeks, await
ing the final decision of the voters
i of Wasco county June 7, when the
$800,000 road bond issue for the con
struction of The Dalles-California
highway will be passed upon. Locat
ing parties are ready to get to work
at once, as soon as it is assured
that the measure has passed.
Another project which is attracting
interest is Hood River' county's pro
posal to bond itself for $350,000 for
the construction of a spur of the Mt.
Hood loop road in that county. Lat
est reports from the Apple city indi
cate that the measure has every
chance of passing when submitted, to
the voters at the June 7th election.
General sentiment throughout Was
co county is thatt the Wasco bond
issue will carry by a safe majority
Some opposition has developed in
various sections of the county, but
an extensive pre-election campaign of
education is planned by The Dalles
Wasco County Chamber of Com
merce and the county court, in
which an effort will be made to get
into personal contact with every vot
er in the county. Speakers will be
sent to all farmers' meetings. '

TO REALIZE POSSIBILITIES.
Overproduction and world-wide bus
iness depression have combined to
produce a stagnacy in the rubber mar
ket from which the principal hope of
permanent relief is in the discovery
of new uses for rubber' according to
the National Bank of Commerce in
New York. Possibilities appear to ex
ist in the industry which would not
only absorb surplus stocks, but would
restore it to a sound basis for the
future, the bank says in the Jlay
number of its magazine, Commerce
Monthly.
'"Over-production has reduced the
price 'of .rubber to less than twenfy
cents a pound, which is less than
a third of the price prevailing from
1913 to 1918 and compares with three

If there is any truth in the com
mon opinion that enthusiasm is con
tagious, The Dalles is in for an epi
demic of that happy affliction, as far
as the new city park with auto camp
ing facilities is concerned. For every
member of the Chamber of Com
merce auto park committee has been
walking the streets in The Dalles
during the last week radiating auto
camp bacillus in sufficient quantities
to inoculate an army.
Among the most rabid of these en
thusiasts, is H.R. Fancher, manager
of The Dalles Garage. Wednesday Fan
cher succeeded In convincing Mrs. R.
M. Williams that she was missing an
experience of a lifetime by not view
ing the park. Although somewhat
skeptical, 'Mrs. Williams consented to
'make a personal inspection.
She was charmed. She frankly ad
mitted that she had not realized the
wonderful possibilities for natural
beauty afforded by the park
Thursday, Mrs. Williams called Fan
cher on the telephone.
"It's about those little shelter
houses," she explained. "I wonder
if you would build another one of
them and send the bill to me?"
Needless to sny, Fancher hcartilv
acquiesced.
Another shelter house had previous
ly been donated by Jqhn Van Dallen
of the Van Dellen Lumber company.
With Mrs. Williams' building complet
ed, the park wilfhave a total of five
. shelter houses, each completo with a
j double camp oven and concrete sur
I faced tables.
Members of the committee aro tak
ing visitors to the camp site every
I day, and it has become quite the thing
to visit the place Sunday afternoons.
The results that have been accom
plished on a place which most resi
dents know of only as a barren rock
pile are astonishing.

"What good Is an auto park to

1,000 trees for the new park. "I'm
